I decided to start this thread mainly so I could sing the praises of Killer the Butcher, who has been, ever since I discovered him, the best TV villain ever. Skeletor, Megatron, Serpentor, the Joker... they all pale in comparisson to Killer the Butcher.
First of all - let's start from the name.
All of the other villains parse words and dance around the subject. "Skeletor" refers mainly to his boney face, and while skeletons are generally supposed to be "scary" - I think most people grow out of being scared of them after a couple of days in elementary school science classes. That and loosing to He-Man really doesn't help his CV.
Megatron - sounds powerful - sure. But "power" is not necessarily "evil" - which is not my attempt at making some moral defense of Megatron, but rather just pointing out that "Megatron" could just as well be the name for a super hero robot - and I believe it in fact WAS in the 70s Shogun Warriors Marvel comics.
Serpentor - like.... Yeah, I get it. Snakes, like skeletons, are creepy and scary. So Serpentor must be evil and all...yawn.
Cy-Kill - now here, at least we understand that this is a killer cycle. Pretty straight forward, however, sadly, it's also a BAD PUN. So - props for the name "kill" but you loose for having a BAD PUN as your name.
Galvatron - again - power...just MORE! MORE I SAY!! But doesn't necessarily communicate evil as such...
The Joker - once you figure out that it's a clown (symbol of happy fun time) who kills people (oh how twisted) then you understand the appeal and the "sinister" evil...but the name as such might just as well have gone to a villain like...oh...say...the Riddler... who spends his time in skin tight pants asking questions all the time...
Who else is there? ... hm...
Ah - I'll leave that up to you guys
KILLER THE BUTCHER!
Now - Killer the Butcher is just a great, great name. If you had called him "Killer" then folks might have gotten the idea of a dog in their minds- but Killer the Butcher just sounds perverse - it's excessive, it's overkill (the word, not the cassette), it's emphasizing a particular sort of nastiness.
And, best of all, Killer the Butcher seems to actually live up to his name. He kills and butchers - albeit via proxy - lots and lots of people. In fact, at one point he gets the idea to use people as "human bombs" with which to ...well...kill other humans.
The fact that he wears jewelry and sunbathes just adds to his appeal as a villain.
