Well, the director does have a track record in bonkers somewhat over the top martial arts comedy so I would be inclined to say that he wouldn't be a terrible choice.
It isn't a film that I have a huge interest in watching personally but I figure if anyone is going to make a fair fist of it he has a good chance.

I get the feeling it is the one that has drawn the short straw. There are a wodge of Japanese animated shows or their derivatives all with live-action options floating around - "Voltron", "Ghost in the Shell", "Robotech", "Dragonball" - all in various stages of development hell. I guess "Dragonball" is getting shoved out there to test the waters. If the sharks eat it I would suspect some of the others will go back to their slumber at the bottom of the sea.
Anyway, this is already the weird universe that has given us movies based on three different beat-em-up games(four if you count the "Bloodrayne" films - and I don't, that would mean I would have to credit Uwe Boll with making actual movies), and the Mario games. Really, how much more parallel can the universe get than that?

Why can't movie makers leave well alone? I've only seen a very little bit of Dragonball in animation form but from what I've seen it seems that due to the fantastical and fantasy attributes of Dragonball that make it so appealing to its fans, a live action movie wouldn't do it justice because of the limitations of the real world. Dragonball seems to be at home in animation and I would suspect manga form because of the abilities of the characters and the consequences there of.

I gather it's the director from Kung Fu Hustle. It might actually be quite good, if you have a philosophical outlook on story continuity. Nope, produced by Chow, directed by James Wong. And it's not the first live action Dragonball movie. I found that one on VHS at a bootfair many years ago, and I still think it's the worst £1 I have ever spent. I doubt this new one will be much better.
