Unexpected impulse buy today - complete West Wing (seasons 1-7) boxed set for £50 from Zavvi.
Amazon do a similar price but I wouldn't trust postal delivery to get me an un-dented box.
Should tide me over nicely through the real-life American politics of the next few weeks.
(That and Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 6, due out in R1 format next week.)

Thats such good value. I need to replace seasons 1 and 2 as there on video and take up so much room.

That is a very good price for a large chunk of quality television. A nice buy there Martin.
A while ago I picked up the second season on DVD for about a fiver in a Charity shop in the town where I originally grew up. A visit to my old homestead and the acquisition of cheap West Wing made for a good day.

A fine purchase there, Martin. I have found the series rewards re-watching quite a bit. You'll get a lot for your fifty quid.
I enjoyed re-watching season 6 (which revolved around picking the Presidental nominees) during the real-life nomination season. Season 7 (the election) will be re-watched soon alongside the real one!

I have 3 and one half series of Gilmore Girls to watch (the final one will be for the first time, I'm most excited) then it's on to The West Wing, though I have a strong urge to watch Studio 60. I'm sure I missed an episode on TV.
Hopefully I'll get on to it before the election. Andy

I don't think there's a bad episode to be found anywhere in the box.
I watched the series faithfully on TV, but I'm pretty sure one or two seasons in the middle were never shown on terrestrial. It'll be fab when I get to that point in the box and find it all unfamiliar and new.

Season 5 is the weakest, being merely 'quite good' rather than 'brilliant'. Seasons 6-7 (which I'm fairly sure where not on terrestial) take a very interesting change in direction. I shall not spoil details though!

All 7 seasons did make it to terrestrial eventually and in order, but ended up at odd times. I think season 5 was the worst.
It was also the worst in terms of episodes due to Sorkins departure. 6 and 7 are better because they stopped trying to make the show as he'd written it, I think.

Andy Yep, Season Five was buried away at some horrendous hour of the night. (If not all the way into the small hours of the evening). Really, "The West Wing" suffered the fate of so many shows bought from America - a steady slide from a reasonable late evening time slot down a slope that leads rapidly into tomorrow morning. Karl

It's a Channel 4 speciality. They seem incapable of letting a show stay in an established slot and finding it's audience.

I think I may have had less patience with season 5 had I watched in week by week rather than in one go as a box set. Still very watchable though. I do agree the change in direction thereafter did stop the show from spiralling downwards though which it might have done had it continued to ape Sorkin's approach. -Ralph

Martin They are not terrible or anything. They still make for good television, but they don't quite reach the heights that the Sorkin re-/written episodes do (because no-one on the writing staff is quite capable of being Sorkin) or that those of the following seasons (because they haven't quite foind their new "voice" yet). I'd still rate it above much of what was contemporary to it - it just went through a bit of a rough patch when it was trying to adjust. Karl (Which reminds me, I must get around to rewatching Season Two at some point not that I actually own it)

They're not terrible or anything, largely the same cast performing scripts by largely the same writers, produced by largely the same behind camera people. You just suspect that the odd line would have had more zing and that things would have gone in just a little bit different a direction if Sorkin had been around. For instance Season 4 ended on a cliffhanger and Season 5's resolution was completely different to how he'd planned to do it.
Rob Lowe leaving didn't help either even if Will Bailey was a decent replacement.

Oh, I still enjoyed season 5. It's that the 'worst' of the show, then it shows how good it was overall!
Amusingly, around that time there was a 'fan campaign' to cancel the show because 'the fans' didn't like it any more. Ah, interwub.

It has very good re-watch value. I've been through the series four times and I can still see myself watching it again.

I got stopped during season 2 when I went to London. Meant to start up again but then I finally found Studio 60 hiding behind a book.

Another convert! Great!
I did not think it would be my thing at all. A show about American politics? Er, yes. I caught a few random S1 episodes when Channel 4 aired it but the late time slot and ads killed it for me. It was not until I was loaned some of the DVD's that I became hooked!
It's extremely rewatchable.

I went to Zavvi yesterday (both the Bristol stores) to buy one of the complete boxsets and found out from the staff that somebody had scalped every single one of them. There was loads available not that long ago.
HMV in Bath are aparentley selling them for £50. Hopefully the scalper has'nt reached there yet.
