I am not sure how to words this but I will give it a shot. Basically has anyone noticed how some stores like ASDA and Woolworths don't catagorise thier DVDs properly?
I've seen more on one or two occasions where films like Dawn of the Dead, Saw (4 i think) were around the lowers shelves where kids can reach them. It seems like DVDs are displayed in some stores with carefree attitude and mix and matched with other genres. I have seen quite a few 18+ films sharing the same bargain bin with Shrek and other kiddie films.
On one of the occasions a small kid picked up a copy of one of the Saw films by the counter at ASDA and studied it. I made a joke to the missus about how 'these 18 year olds are looking younger these days' in a subtle hint for the kids parent to take the DVD away and place it back.
Whilst kids are not old enough to buy certain DVDs I feel they should still be out of reach from the kiddies because some of those covers are scary.

Morrisons takes the same bargain bin approach regardless of what the age rating is. I've seen b-movies with an 18 rating stuffed in the same bin as Rainbow Brite DVD's.

Stores tend to rack DVD's in 'top 10' sections and the like in terms of sales rather than content: you don't see 'top ten 18-rated films' for example. I think it's assumed consumers and shops take note of ratings when buying/selling them.

The laws against selling rated movies and games to minors are strict (£5000 fine for the shop and -I kid ye not- up to 6 months in jail for the cashier/sales assistant) so all modern tills have an alert system that reminds the cashier to verify the age of the purchaser of 12+ rated stuff when it's scanned and before any money changes hands.
Doesn't stop the kids looking, of course. But then, pondering the sheer horror of 18-rated movies was practically a full-time job when I was wee. The boys in my primary class would often claim to have seen the latest splatterfest (Robocop and Friday the 13th were most common- damn I'm old) and frantically try to make up the plot and pretend they're reminiscing. Good times.

We did much the same at our school! I recall the many colourful accounts of what happened in the 'Aliens' and 'Terminator' movies by Those Who Had Seen. The 'Bishop dismembered' scene in 'Aliens' and 'Arnie shoots out a cop station' bit in 'The Terminator' were very popular favourite schoolground re-enactments.

Heh! We were the same at my school with Nightmare on Elm Street.
(Though I was never allowed to watch films or much television at all [Mind you, with only BFBS on the teevee there wasn't much choice anyway] when I was a child, so I missed out on a lot of "U" stuff.)

BFBS?
I probably watched too much tv as a kid myself. The TV was my babysitter sometimes (bad I know) but I feel I soaked up a lot of culture through my hours of box viewing during a decade when TV was really great!

BFBS = British Forces Broadcasting Service.

I fondly remember that from my early days in Germany.
Sunday night where you could watch He-Man and then the Krypton Factor afterwards.

I recall mainly only watching kids shows in the 80's when I was a nipper but I did watch a few games shows as well with Treasure Hunt and 321 being my faves. I do also recall trying to get some sleep some nights while the theme tune to Magnum was playing on the TV downstairs.
Going back to the original topic when I was a kid we all tended to go into a video shop and reach for the 18 rated movies and put them amongst the preschool videos to see what the reaction would be when a mother came in with her five year old kid to choose a video to watch. I'm guessing its much the same these days but with DVD's being incorrectly placed in the kids section by mischievous kids.

Well I managed to snag a lot of horror films at the age of 12, the local video shop in Ireland was quite lax about letting you take videos back for "your parents" and as such I got to see a lot of crappy films in the pursuit of being cool.
