In your opinion, what do you consider to be the best line of dialogue from any film or television show or book or play or comic or whatever?

I have so many of these bouncing round my head and in most cases it is just because the context/character is cool or great so here we go with some - more to come I think as the day goes on
"No matter where you go, there you are" Buckaroo Banzai "Dry hairs for squids" Jack Deth and, in response to being told killing is not always the answer we have, "No, but its usually a pretty good guess" "He slimed me" + "When people ask if you are a god you say YES" Venkman Ghostbusters "I like to play with things awhile before annihilation" Ming the merciless "Mother is the name for god on the lips and hearts of all children" Eric Draven "One shall stand one shall fall "--err not sure GRIN "We're going to need a bigger boat" - Jaws The whole damn final speech from Hauer in Blade Runner rocks as well

As with most questions along this line my answers are generally going to come from Joss Whedon, Arron Sorkin show and Gilmore girls.
Firefly "I'll be in my bunk!" Gilmore Girls "Oi with the Poodles" And I can't think of a West wIng Studio 60 one right now. I should also mention Princess Bride both the book and the film. Again not got the brain power to come up with examples.

Hmm. Couldn't give a particular single favourite piece of dialogue to be honest. But there are a few I am rather fond of, just to give a random selection:-
"He who loses control, Loses!" - Frank Pembleton, "Homicide: Life on the Streets"
"It has to be here somewhere." "Somewhere in this building is our talent." - Toby Zeigler and Sam Seaborn "The West Wing"
"If my god wins, you're screwed." - Frank Pembleton, on discovering that Tim Bayliss has taken communion at a girlfriend church despite being from completely the wrong denomination. "Homicide: Life on the streets."

Nobody seems prepared to answer Graham's question, namely what do you consider the best line. You're all just giving long lists of good lines. 'The Princess Bride' and 'The West Wing' are indeed chock full of them.
The most beautiful lines are probably Shakespeare's: "And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest," etc. It's hard to beat this for best speech:
To be, or not to be--that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep-- No more--and by a sleep to say we end The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to.
Then there's hundreds of lines of sheer genius in 'The Goon Show':
However, my all time favourite line of all time is spoken here beginning at 22 seconds by James Stewart. Greatest words of wisdom ever spoken.

Martin If I could adequately answer the question then I probably would have. But for me there isn't a single "best line of dialogue" - I don't find the axes of measurement to converge that way. There are just many lines of dialogue that are best when measured in a given way. That said, if there was to be any line of dialogue that was a candidate I would have to say the line you suggest would be a strong contender. From "Harvey" I believe? (One day I must get around to seeing that) Karl

There were quite a few good lines in Blackadder with several coming from Blackadder Goes Forth. I can't recite any off the top of my head though at the moment.

Oh I'm right there with on that one buddy! Blackadder, the endless sauce of funny quotes! This is a damn good thread. I need to give it much thought...
