***If you already own the original version of Hubris #5 from April 2006 then you won't miss out content-wise if you don't get this reconstructed issue*** What's the non-content difference? What does 'reconstructed' entail? Martin

What's the non-content difference? The layout is different to the original version in that it uses the design template of the new 2008 issues. So purely cosmetic. All the actual text stories, features, AtoZs and comic strip is the same as before. The only change is there's a new introduction on page 2. What does 'reconstructed' entail? I had thought I'd lost all the files to do with Hubris #1-5, but after scavenging a few old archives on external hard drives and such I managed to salvage all the files from the magazine. (And things like Andy's illustrations were amongst some old email archives.) Plus anything I've coloured/lettered/written myself was on yet another backup. However, all the Adobe InDesign files (the programme I use to put Hubris together and print from) were gone so I had to "reconstruct" the issue from scratch in terms of layout, pagination and so on.

Well, having the original Hubris#5 I'm not personally in need of this version, but for those who missed out on it at the time of first publication I would say that it is well worth having, there is some good stuff in there.

Thanks for the explanation, Graham. I'll pass on this one, since it seems from what you say that the original has more 'limited edition' value. Plus saving paper to save the planet, etc. But anyone who didn't get it should get this one!

Plus saving paper to save the planet, etc. But anyone who didn't get it should get this one! Martin I'm not actually expecting to publish many of this issue, so they're being printed to order to save on paper. Incidentally, the paper used for Hubris is made in Finland in a mill from 55% recycled fibre content that is certified to the ISO14001 environmental management standard and certified to the EMAS environmental management standard. It is also bleached using an Elemental Chlorine Free process and certified by the Forestry Stewardship Commission meaning that the non recycled (AKA "virgin pulp") fibre content (45%) comes from well managed forests and other controlled sources. That's probably meaningless to most people, but as far as paper goes it's about as environmentally friendly as one can get. As well as being more than half recycled the important thing is that it most certainly does not come from Brazil (thus reducing uncontrolled deforestation and long-haul shipping fuel expenditure). It's also fully recyclable itself and indeed biodegradable. (All the duff sheets, e.g. Hubris misprints are recycled anyway, so nothing gets added to landfill by us.) It's not the cheapest paper on the market, but it's one of the most responsible.

You know, I think the fact that I understand some of that makes me slightly worried about the amount of information stored in my brain that I have no obvious use for..... But nevertheless, I am pleased to see that Hubris is printed on good responsible paper. Another strike in its favour! Karl

We try our best!
The sad thing is that a lot of the paper used in this country is completely unregulated/untraceable and the situation worsens tenfold when something is printed abroad where regulation is nigh unheard of.

Right, apology time!
After much to-ing and fro-ing with my friends at Royal Mail, I found out that an entire bag of post that contained all the Hubris 5s was lost. So since then I've been losing my temper with some poor sod in Edinburgh about the matter and finally this week got an apology and... better still... some compensation! So it meant I could reprint the run and send them out this afternoon.
I am very sorry about the whole fiasco! But it's sorted out. 30 odd apology emails have also been sent out so thanks to everyone for their patience!
Normal service will resume.

Ooh! Also: they paid me to buy some hardbacked envelopes as well in response to my complaints about the magazines always arriving crumpled and bent.
Nagging works!
