Exactly! Fake! Therefore not really a sausage despite trying to look, feel and taste like one. Fake meat, not fake sausage. Next you'll be telling me a vegetarian scotch egg isn't a scotch egg... A bean burger is not a beef burger, a quorn sausage is not a pork sausage. Sausage is a form of food delivery, not a part of a pig. Martin

I would be very concerned if a beef sausage had been part of a pig... I would also observe that almost all sausages contain material other than meat, usually rusk or bread. In that regard the distinction being made here is less clear cut than it appears...
Also, Quorn Sausages are indeed Sausages. Just sausages made of Quorn, just as pork sausages are made of pork and beef sausages are made of beef.

Sorry Doctor M. Mrs Sockers made me except quorn sausage-likes as sausage.. I had no choice! They are still an inferior sausage and taste like toilet paper.

tish and pish. A bog standard quorn sausage I grant you is something that struggles in the taste department, I don't bother with them, but any supermarket brand meat-free cumberland style sausage is a genuinely tasty experience.

Going on the etymology, the key factor is that the product be salty. So says wiktionary, which contains a fascinatingly definitive list of 'sausage shaped things':
From late Middle English sausige, from Anglo-Norman saussiche (compare Jèrriais saûciche), from Late Latin salsīcia (compare Spanish salchicha, Italian salsiccia), neuter plural of salsīcius (“seasoned with salt”), derivative of Latin salsus (“salted”), from sal (“salt”). More at salt.
So if your sausage product ain't salty, forget about it.

Tesco Meat Free hotdogs all the way! (By that I mean the vegetarian ones, not the ones that are supposed to be meat but contain all kinds of nasties).

As I mentioned on the old Hub, there's a restaurant in Bristol called The Clifton Sausage, surprisingly, specialising in sausages. I am going there tonight for the fourth time this year. It is going to be most awesome. Clifton Sausage just got a mention on Test Match Special!
