Decent book, had a thorough read-through now. It doesn't convince me that Animated is a compelling universe of it's own (most of the fun comes from spotting references to other stuff) but it looks very nice and clearly a lot of effort has gone in to it. I doubt I'll return to it now I've read the annotations and will likely pass it on.

Postie just brought my copy of II.
I've had a quick flick through; there's plenty of content. There are lots of characters pictured, many of which I didn't even know had appeared in the series, like the Mexican mini Autobots. I laughed out loud at the stellar cartography pages. The annotations for that would be as big as the book itself!
The second part of the book looks very impressive, with loads of background material. There are plenty of pictures of toys at all stages, even prototypes from the Hero series.

My head went all 'splodey from the tiny bit of that I glimpsed... Why has my copy not dispatched from Amazon yet!? I had it preordered for frackin' months!

I finished reading it yesterday. I was surprised to see a couple of LSOTW references, considering the publication dates. More importantly than that, Ultra Magnus' ship, Steelhaven, is powered by Roche-class hyperdrive engines! I can't recommend this book enough. Even if you're not especially into Animated, the second part of the book, about the development of both toys and cartoons, is a remarkable insight into how the brand is produced. Of particular note is the "season 4" section with story ideas and pictures of developed-but-unproduced toys from sketchs through to full prototypes. There's a "word from Hasbro": "...We share these exclusive images here as a glimpse of what might have been." It makes you think at the same time, "wow, thanks for letting us see them" and, "Why show us if you won't let us have them, you bleeps!?"

Had a look at Andu's copy. Pretty well put together, with lots of nice touches (the star map is cool). I doubt I'll pick up a copy as I don't have enough interest in Animated but I can't fault it, it's pretty good and accomplishes what it sets out to do.

I to have had a look at Andy's copy of this book. I wasn't originally planning on picking it up as Animated as a television show does not really do a lot for me, but I have to say that I am rethinking that as it is a very good art book (something that is rarely to be found for a western property). The map is a work of demented genuis - I cannot think of anywhere else that you can see a Starmap that contains references that run the gamut from Flash Gordon, through Doctor Who, Farscape and Robotech II:The Sentinels to the works of folk like Cherryh, Asimov and Silverberg (and that is before one gets into the obligatory references to other Transformers continuities).

After some thought, I thought I would pick up volume 2 as it's a nice art book. Alas, it went out of print in less than a month. I tried to get it through A Place in Space but they've been told by Diamond that it's out of print.
It boggles the mind that IDW can keep books in print for a shorter period than their monthly comics!

Be interesting to see how much the Wreckers trade will go for when it's impossible to find. I sold out of it over the weekend, despite ordering double what I usually would on a TF tpb, and Diamond UK have it on back order already.
