Been waiting for Payload and his case brother Dropkick for a while. A committed Dropkick fan from when I first saw pictures Payload I've wavered on a bit.
Payload is an armoured delivery vehicle - either a bank van or prisoner transport. The logo on the side says Armoured Security Service. It's on a smaller scale to many deluxe toys, and the vehicle is in itself a bit smaller than most. The vehicle does look quite bland, there's lots of flat surfaces with no detail.
TF: Unclip the flat roof from behind the cab and fold the roof back at the back of the vehicle. The roof splits along the middle, and then folds out to the sides. The roof halves then fold down and inwards onto the sides, which then in turn bend back. This has revealed the robot head. Pull the wheel hubs down from under the cab and then fold the grey sideboards in half and backwards locking the peg on the side into the rear wheel. Pull the legs down under the waist, and swing the waist round. Fold the blue front of the vehicle up to form the top of the feet and then pull the feet up. The sides of the legs fold down to brace against the foot. Fold down the panel on the side of the arms and flip the hand out. Close the panel. Spin the arm 180 degrees at the bicep joint, and fold the arms to the sides of the body. Recess the head section towards the body by pushing the arm it's on into the top of the body. Fold the head onto the body.
The resulting robot is packed with detail - lots of panel lines. He's got bending ankles, knees, ball jointed hips, revolving waist, ball jointed shoulder, swivelling bicep, bending elbow, ball jointed wrist and swivelling but limited neck. The head is the mono eye favoured in the movie line, but this time the combination of dark blue and grey puts you in the mind of Shockwave.
The only thing really detracting from the toy is the massive black bar sticking out of his bottom which ends in the grey grill from the front of the vehicle. Push on this and a his waist projects forward eventually revealing a claw which swings closed.
But somehow even this just adds to the character of the toy somehow. Yes it's a gimmick that detracts from the robot mode but somehow it works.
In fact the only real problem I have with this toy is that it's a bit of a fallaparticon. During the course of owning the toy the grill at the front of the toy, the waist piece and the head & shoulders have all fallen off. In fact - thanks to Mrs Toys - the grill is currently AWOL !
I wanted to lay into this toy. But I like him. The robot mode is packed with character. Well worth a buy.
