Onslaught comes courtesy of the new Argos catalogue.
Onslaught is a SWAT Team armoured vehicle, with a roof mounted turret and twin cannons. Essentially he's a larger version of Cybertron Defence Hot Shot/Galaxy Force Exigeyser. The main differences are a pair of fold down claws under the front, and a huge sheet of armour plate covering the turret. I can't help looking at it and thinking that they've tried to do G1 Onslaught's ramp somehow, got halfway through and abandoned the concept leaving this bit of plastic stuck to the roof !
The turret swivels, but the guns don't elevate. The tank makes a noise when rolled along, and also has 2 button activated sounds - a very brief one siren and a gun fire volley. The hatch at the front of the vehicle opens and you can see what vaguely looks like a cockpit inside. There's a pair of flip up headlights on the front of the vehicle.
TF: remove the armour sheet from the turret - you can use that as a shield later. Fold up the back of the vehicle. Turn over. Pull the panel the front wheel is on out to the side, just enough to unhook it from the rest of the vehicle. Fold back at the rear of the vehicle so the panels with the wheels on are stretched out behind the vehicle as the legs. Pull the legs apart allowing you to open the cage like structure on the inside of each of them. Fold the front wheel back into where the cage was and then close the cage round it - there's 2 pegs that go into 2 small holes on the leg pieces to secure the cage and they're showing signs of stress on mine already ! Fold the side of the vehicle in to form the front of the leg - it should lock onto the cage structure. *SHOULD*. One of mine doesn't, and it's ever so annoying. Fold the panel that would have been above the front wheel up to form the foot, and finish the leg by folding the very front of this panel back under the foot to give it more sensible proportions. The robot arms are projecting back from the front of the vehicle - raise these as far as you can and then separate the front of the vehicle revealing the robot's head and fold down to the sides. Fold the vehicle's window section down and lock onto the robot chest. Mine's got a little difficulty locking the chest into place OK. Position the arms so the silver panel with the purple decepticon symbol & it's opposite counterpart are facing forward. Fold the shoulder panels up. Fold back the cockpit hatch so it's sitting between the gun barrels. Fold the hands out. Fold out the post on the robot's left arm, and lock the shield into place. You'll need to spread the legs slightly to get him to stand up ok.
Resulting robot is big and chunky - the chest has the vehicle's window section on it which makes it look a lot like Bruticus' chest armour. In fact I'm getting a more Bruticus vibe from the robot mode than an Onslaught one. One arm has the shield on it, the other has a button which flips out a gun. The head looks more like Onslaught - the box illustration tends towards Bruticus. There's a clear visor for the eyes. It isn't lightpiped, but does light up whenever you press the button on the turret. I've tried triggering the wheeling along noise in robot mode - the trigger is on his left hip - and that doesn't make the light come on.
Articulation: Foot bends, as does the knee, swivel above the knee, leg bends to the side at the hip as well as moving backwards and forwards. No waist. Head turns at the neck. Arms move fore and back at the shoulders, and the swing out to the sides. There's a bicep swivel, a bending elbow and a swivel joint at the wrist.
To be clear for the G1 Onslaught fans: There is not hint that he can combine with any other toys or that any future combination is planned to use him.
Overall..... I expected to like it better. The problems with the cage structure inside the robot legs - stressing the holes and the panels not locking into place - are a serious downer for me. He could do with a hand held gun too. The brief siren makes me think I've got a dodgy one. Just somehow not as impressed as I have been by other recent toys.
