Having completed the BW basics I'm going to push on with the larger toys Dinobot (Grimlock) was done during Dinobot Week Cybershark was done with the Neo Cybertrons. The following have all had recent re-releases so I've altered their reviews to take into account all variations thereof: Cheetor (Tigatron/Shadow Panther)Waspinator (Buzzsaw)Tarantulas (Blackarachnia)RhinoxWolfang (K-9/Boldfang)Have a read, there might be some new stuff there within. That leaves me with the following to complete the deluxe BW toys (As opposed to Fuzors, TM & TM II). So that's probably where I'm going next. Bonecrusher (C-13 Big Horn) Retrax (C-18 Power Hug) Jetstorm (C-19 Ton Bot) Manterror (C-20 Mantis)

Bonecrusher www.tfu.info/1997/Maximal/Bonecrusher/bonecrusher.htmBonecrusher is one of the last pure Beast Wars toys released before the coming of the Fuzors and Tansmetals. By this stage name reuse is in full swing with Bonecrusher, Inferno, Lazorbeak and Snarl cropping up on Beast Wars toys posing no relation to the G1 characters. He's a black bison with red eyes, gold horns and small grey legs - each of which move backwards and forwards at the knee. The back legs move back at the hip as part of the TF. The bison mode has a gimmick - pull the tail back and the top of the toy - from head to back - rises up and fires a missile. TF: Bend the back legs back at the hip to form the robot legs, fold the beast feet up into the legs which will probably in the process save you the trouble of folding the robot feet down as they'll fold out as part of this movement. Unclip the sides of the beast and fold out & forwards - each is attached to the main body by a connecting strut. Turn the robot waist round 180 degrees. Fold the front beast feet up and in. Fold the panels beneath the beast mouth up & forward then swing the robot arms out behind them. Fold the arms out to the sides. Fold the front beast legs down to form the sides of the chest, and then the beast head forward to form the robot chest. Finally bring the robot head up - along with all the missile launching gimmicky - to sit on & behind the robot's shoulders. There's a clip under the missile launcher that should lock this in place. If it's loose you've not got the clip in the right place. Balance for the robot can be a little dodgy, but folding the beast legs down from the back of the robot legs to act as heel spurs helps a lot. More grey is exposed on the robot's upper limbs, with the lower limbs, waist and face being white. Like several BW toys of this time there's a launcher embedded in the face/mouth - here it's the missile mentioned above which is once again activated by pulling back on the tail. His articulation includes bending ankles & knees, ball jointed hips, a waist joint, shoulders that lift up at the body (part of the TF) and have a ball joint at the arm and elbows that bend up & also have a ball joint allowing the lower arm to turn and bend in. Not a bad BW toy, but it's totally built round the gimmick which leads to a large amount of bison fur and tail sticking out the back of the head in robot mode ! Big Horn www.tfu.info/1998/Cybertron/Bighorn/bighorn.htmBig Horn is BW II toy C-13 also appearing in VS-13 with Starscream & BB. A bit outnumbered there then ! Big Horn is a relatively minor repaint - in beast mode he looks virtually the same ! It's only when you get to robot mode you see that he white is now red. From my perspective the western version - Bonecrusher - looks the better of the two.

Retrax www.tfu.info/1997/Predacon/Retrax/retrax.htmHow do you talk about Retrax ? It's such an odd toy. It's a segmented bug with 5 tiny legs (bending at the where they meet the body) down each side. Mainly a semi clear dark green, the top is a much paler green paint, the antennae & legs are black and the claws & stinger are yellow. The claws are open at the front, and the stinger up at the back but both have small yellow triggers by them which cause them to close/drop down respectively. The other spring loaded action feature involves the entire toy - squeeze together the yellow triggers in the middle of the beast and he curls up into a ball. Ten years on and the mechanism for holding the beast open & stretched out in mine is starting to wear, and I usually find it curled up in a ball. If it's not I find it's triggered if I touch the toy. Or look at it funny. TF: turn the toy over and fold the legs out from the middle to one side. Fold the leg on the opposite side in, and then fold the panel it's connected to into the space vacated by the legs. Then from the same side fold the side panel down and the head up. Uncouple the back of the bug at the 2 yellow connectors 1/4 and 3/4 the way along it's length. From behind the robot looks like the bug on it's side with some legs sticking out the bottom. The other way round he's standing with his arms outstretched. The face is very odd - like a gas mask with 2 horns sticking out of it. It's a very top heavy toy with very thin legs having to carry the weight of the entire beast mode. All the meaningful articulation is in the legs - feet and knees bend, swivel bellow the hips, ball jointed hips & head. Yes the arms bend at the shoulders, elbows and wrists but the only way they bend is inwards as part of the ball gimmick for the beast mode - which still works here. The arms can be uncoupled from the beast shell - there's a clip on the back of the wrist and a peg on the back of the hand that lock them in place, but you'll not gain any extra movement, and will probably have more difficulty locking them back Overall: Odd. No other word for it. Strange beast mode, with an OK gimmick which in turn seriously hampers the robot mode. At least it's painted sensibly..... Powerhug www.tfu.info/1998/Cybertron/Powerhug/powerhug.htm..... unlike Powerhug. Interesting name. You get the feeling that Takara were taking the mick a bit as it's about the only thing the toy can do. At least they didn't call it Big Hug (There's a Big Horn & Big Mos in BWII) which would have made it sound like a Teletubby. Powerhug swaps the clear green for a pale blue with metallic flake, the pale green paint for silver, black & some yellow for red, the yellow on the pincers, stinger & robot waist for grey and makes the white on the robot legs and inner shell whiter. What it is is one of the worst repaints ever. Right up there with Energon Strongarm, who, now I think of it, shares many of the same colours. AVOID ! Powerhug is numbered C-18 in Beast Wars II and appears in VS-18 with Autocrusher the green autochanging digger.

Jetstorm www.tfu.info/1997/Predacon/Jetstorm/jetstorm.htmJetstorm is one of the first BW dlx toys released in the UK and as a non show character he didn't sell too well. Though obviously not as badly as Cybershark ..... Jetstorm is a Dragonfly. He's got a mainly black body with pinky orange highlights - including mandibles and legs - and four clear green wings. The 6 legs move up & down - though there's something odd about the front pair, they look like they're molded wrong and actually should be pointing down. The claws in front of the face bend in. All four of the wings move up & down as well as moving back & forth. As benefits the name reuse - the original Jetstorm was an Aquaspeeder - he's got a water pistol gimmick. There's a lever on his tail - push it forward and place his head in water. When you release the lever it'll suck the water up filling it's reservoir which can then be discharged by pushing the lever forward again. There's also a green trigger at the base of his tail. Pressing it deploys a missile launcher from either side of his tail which swing forward - as long as there are no wings in the way ! - and can then be independently fired. That's quite a lot going on for one beast mode ! TF: Make sure the missile launchers are retracted, turn the toy over, fold the robot legs back, turn each out 90 degrees to the side at the joint bellow the hip, then straighten the foot out. Unclip the claws & eyes from the side of the beast head and pull out to the sides a bit - these form the robot arms and will bring the lower set of beast wings with them. Pull down on the other set of wings unlocking the robot chest from inside the beast - you want to fold this round so you can see the outside of the chest as you're looking at the bottom of the beast. Pull on the robot's legs unlocking the waist from under the tail. Both waist and chest are on struts - move the waist & the chest so the waist locks into the bottom of the chest. Then slide the centre part of the beast head into the top of the chest as the beast head. Fold the head down, bring the wings on the waist in to the middle and fold back onto the chest and slightly over the shoulders. The resulting robot is mostly green & pinky orange with little black visible from the front apart from on the head, which looks very insect/alien like. A green lightpipe power all 3 of the eyes and the mouth is the nozzle for the water pistol gimmick. The odd front legs now serve as heel spurs, but aren't really necessary as the insect's tail runs down and back from the robot and helps support it. The water pistol gimmick still works in this mode, though the missile launchers are a little hampered by wanting to spring into the position occupied by the robot's shoulders. Articulation: foot & knees bend, swivel bellow the hip, ball jointed hip, head moves a little to the sides as well as up & down, ball jointed shoulders, bicep swivel plus another above the elbow, bending elbow and ball jointed claw. Quite impressive and very nasty looking as a robot. Overall: Decent toy. Would have made a good character in the cartoon (possibly as a Waspinator upgrade ?) Tonbot www.tfu.info/1998/Cybertron/Tonbot/tonbot.htmTonbot is a Japanese repaint of Jetstorm in BWII. He appears as toy C-19 and in VS-19 with Autojetter - the blue jet Autochanger who didn't get a G2 release. The black parts - including the lower robot legs that were painted on Jetstorm - become red, pink becomes grey and green becomes a metallic grey. All the clear green parts become orange - including the legs which are again painted on Jetstorm. Not my favourite repaint, but the grey would have worked better on Jetstorm than the pink !

Manterror www.tfu.info/1997/Predacon/Manterror/manterror.htmManterror is a green preying mantis with clear blue back limbs and wings. All of these are attached to the body by ball joints. The back limbs are odd - they're attached to a panel, which is hinged to another panel which in turn is hinged to the body. No matter what position you put the panels in it doesn't look quite right. TFU's answer is that the lower panel goes down & the upper one goes out, but you can also have both panels going straight down or upper panel down and the lower one pointing out with the legs coming up. Some sort of better lock to the body would have helped. His head moves up & down as do the antennae on his head and his jaw opens. Onto the arms - lots of joints here The shoulders can move up or down at the body - part of the TF - the shoulder pad is connected to this by a ball joint, then the upper arm is connected to the shoulder pad by a ball joint. Another ball joint at the elbow and then a bending joint at the wrist before the claw. The claws themselves - cast in clear green - have a removable blue wheel under them - press on the top to eject. Why ? The ejection isn't exactly a launching weapon, he doesn't have a disc shooter and can't hold the wheels in his hands - mainly cos the robot doesn't have any. Odd, odd, odd ! TF: Position the rear legs and the leg panels out to the sides. From under the mantis fold the robot legs out, fold out the feet & heel spurs and fold the waist back into the body of the mantis. Fold the mantis head down to form the robot chest and exposing the robot head, Fold the upper leg panel in so the legs are facing forward. Fold the shoulder joints up so they're where they look like they should be for robot mode over the beast leg panels. Fold the beast legs so they all point down, and fold in the legs panels so they meet in the middle and form the robot's chest. Beast mode is very tall and thin - with arms longer than he is tall. Head is clear green with his rubsign on the top and a mask painted in green. Arms are as per the mantis arms, head is ball jointed as are the robot hips and knees. He has no real hands as such - just the mantis claws which adds to his alien appearance. Wings are now mounted on his back and can be deployed in robot mode. Interesting beast mode, slightly flawed robot mode - arms too long, no hands. Not a favourite BW toy of mine but far better than many toys in later lines ! Mantis www.tfu.info/1998/Cybertron/Mantis/mantis.htmMantis is Manterror released in Japan with some minor colour reworking: The clear blue is darker, the robot head mask is painted dark blue and (I assume) the rubsign is changed. Not really worth bothering with if you already have Manterror. He comes by himself as C-20 or with Autolauncher - the fire engine Autochanger that was unreleased in G2 - as part of VS-20

The 6 legs move up & down - though there's something odd about the front pair, they look like they're molded wrong and actually should be pointing down. Nah, that's how a Dragonfly... well, flies They point their legs forward like that and use them to catch their prey on the wing. I've always liked Jetstorm as aside from being a fun, well-designed little figure if he takes full advantage of his beast mode design he must be one on the most deadly aerial Transformers ever built. Dragonflies are superb aerial predators, size considerations aside they far more manoeuvrable and deadly than any bird of prey *and* Jetstorm has the added ability to spew acid and fire pretty green missiles. I'd love to see him re-released in a new colours.

Inferno www.tfu.info/1996/Predacon/Inferno/inferno.htmInferno is a character introduced later on in the first series of Beast Wars. And yet his toy didn't sell. Big Time. So much so that (so the story goes) when Hasbro was preparing to release Transmetal Inferno a year later they saw there were still original Inferno's on the shelves and changed the name ! Inferno is the last Destron Beast Wars toy released in Japan before BWII and is numbered D-11 and appears in VS-11 with Cybershark. Inferno is a mega sized Fire Ant cast in a pinkish red, clear red and black. His fore and rear legs are ball jointed at the body and first joint, with just a bending joint in the middle whereas the middle legs are solid black pieces ball jointed at the body. The black last third of his rear legs is removable and forms a missile - place in his mouth and push a lever forward on his head - the mandibles open and the missile fires. Inferno has a proto vehicle/base mode - split the abdomen into it's 4 segments and pose with the ant's bottom in the air with the legs pulled out the way. Inside the abdomen is a quad cannon, with a crank lever underneath. Pressing the crank cause the folded out abdomen segments to spin. It's kind of a gun emplacement. This idea would continue into later Megas and all the TM toys. TF: pull the rear hips back, then swing the rear legs and abdomen round 180 degrees. Fold the abdomen onto the ant's back. Bring the rear legs together to form the robot's waist. Fold the black last third of the beast legs onto the front of the robot legs. Fold the black middle legs down. Open the panel on the ant's back, then fold the head of the ant down bringing the robot head out through the vacated slot for the panel on the back. Close the panel. Fold the black part of the front legs into the back of the middle section of the front legs forming the robot arms. Fold the abdomen up onto the robot's back. Robot stays red having introduced little new pieces to the robot mode save the grey head. Ball joints at neck, shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. The mandible section can be slid out of the ant head and used as a hand weapon, and from that the missile launcher can be removed & also hand held. The abdomen can be opened up again here and used as some sort of rocket pack. The clear plastic most of Inferno is made of really comes into it's own in robot mode - I can remember posing it on the window sill of my south facing bedroom window in Kingston and the sun just caught the toy and lit it up ! Overall: Not the worst toy in the world, and bar far not the worst Mega toy. A little simplistic perhaps - most of what he does could have been reproduced in a deluxe. But a truly barking mad character in the cartoon ! Antagony www.tfu.info/1998/Predacon/Antagony/antagony.htmAntagony is a Botcon 1998 exclusive toy. It's a simple, near completely black repaint of Inferno and she looks rather nice indeed

Transquito www.tfu.info/1997/Predacon/Transquito/transquito.htmTransquito is yet another Mega toy that didn't sell too well. Neither of the US 1997 Megas were in the show and as such there's not a lot of support for them. Transquito is a Mosquito (as per the name !) mainly cast in a bronzey brown plastic with some additional purple bits. As such what he looks like in beast mode is essentially a scaled up version of Waspinator (which might also have hampered the toy) with the addition of a prominent spike bellow the head. In this mode he has 6 fixed legs which meet the body at a ball joint. The clear yellow wings on his back flap by moving a lever and can be bent up or down. He has a weapon in this mode - pull back on the levers at the rear of the head causing the head to split in two and the stinger to flip into the gap and to be used as a missile launcher. At this point the Mega toys were being used to trial vehicle modes for BW TFs: Move the wings out to the sides, fold the wing section back revealing a second face then split the wings in two down the middle and fold the front halves to the sides. What you get is some sort of crawling wingless beast with a huge pincer claw which can be opened and close by a lever on his back. Not the greatest alt mode. TF to robot (from beast) Flip the missile launcher up. Pull the legs slightly to the sides. Fold the beast head down between the beast legs to form the robot chest and close the beast legs onto the sides. Pull the robot's arms away from the tabs on the insect body and straighten. Split the abdomen in two down the middle. Pull the end of the abdomen nearest the thorax out to the sides by joints at the far end of the toy - you want it so the abdomen halves (lower legs) are sticking out to the sides. Now you can see the screws looking out from the robot hips - you want to hide these. Swing the robot legs up so the upper legs are in a sitting position but the lower legs still point to the sides. Fold the legs out to the sides as far as possible, straighten at the knee and swing the robot legs forward so the solid side of the hips is showing. Rotate each leg in 90 degrees at the hip so the front of the legs is showing. Fold out the feet. Once again very Waspinator like in form - beast legs on the arms, beast head on the chest, insect wings on the back. This time we do get Jetstorm & Bonecrusher's "head with a weapon in it" in this case the missile fired by a trigger on the head. He bends at the ankle & knee, swivels bellow the hip, the hip bends to the side and moves back and forth. The head can turn but for it to not be looking down when you do it the toy needs to be leaned back a bit. The shoulders are ball jointed, there's a bicep swivel and the elbows bend. Wings still flap via a lever in the back. Overall: OK, but there's nothing new or innovative here, and the resemblance to Waspinator is so strong they'd have sold more if they'd have coloured it green and called in Waspinator. Big Mos www.tfu.info/1998/Cybertron/BigMos/bigmos.htmBig Mos keeps the same basic bronze colour as Transquito, the yellow on the wings and the brown of the antennae and legs. But I'm afraid Takara has one of it's periodic moments of repaint madness after that - the purple is gone replaced by Day-Glo green and some bright red. Awful. Bad for the eyes. Big Mos shipped by himself as Beast Wars Neo C-17 or in VS-17 with Autostinger - the yellow version of the G2 Autoroller Truck.

B'boom (Apache) www.tfu.info/1997/Maximal/B%27Boom/b%27boom.htmB'Boom is a blue coloured Mandrill. He bears many similarities to his Mega sized case brother Transquito: both are similar to existing characters (in B'Boom's case Optimus Primal - they're both monkeys), both have attempts at third modes, both are non show characters and both sold poorly. B'Boom is coloured exactly the same as his Japanese version Apache who was sold as the first Beast Wars II toy C-12 or in VS-12 with Megastorm - a slight recolour of the G2 Megatron tank mold B'Boom's beast form is designed to rest on all 4 legs though he can stand on just the rear ones. The rear legs bend at the ankle & knee, turn bellow the hip and are ball jointed at the hip. The front legs have a ball jointed ankle, bend at the elbow, swivel bellow the shoulder and have a ball jointed shoulder. This articulation will be carried forward to the legs and arms of the beast mode respectively. If you pull back on the ears of the toy the mouth and eyes open. There's also a lever in the back of the toy which can then be slid forward to expose the gun and both missiles in the mouth. To TF to battle platform mode: Pull the sides of the underneath of the body down and fold to the sides. Pull the head forward. Fold the back of the head and all the back of the toy back from the back of the toy folding the waist under the toy. Fold the feet back so he's standing on the top of the beast feet and flip out the heel spurs. Fold the far end of the sides of the undercarriage out, push the lever on each of these forward so the guns extend and position (via some joint origami that I won't even attempt to describe) along side the big gun in the middle of the toy - TFU's photo has the molded missile arrays pointing up but I'd fold them to the sides extending the surface of the battle platform and getting the folded down flaps underneath.. Fold the beast arms/forelegs under these - these can be folded down to help stabilise the toy. Slide the big gun forward using the small blue lever on the back - the trigger is now exposed and it can be used as a missile launcher. You know for ages I couldn't stand this mode - bit of a mess, odd 3rd head sticking out the front, not stable. But today I just happen to have my box of RID Spychangers by the PC and B'Boom's attack platform is perfect to use with them - or Legends/Micromasters ! Something similar at the time would have enhanced the toy no end ! TF (from beast to robot) Turn the rear legs round 180 degrees bellow the hip so the grey is on the outside of the legs and the blue is on the inside. Straighten the legs behind the beast. Fold the foot out so the top of the beast foot is underneath. Fold down the heel spurs. Look at the bottom of the beast. Fold back the end of the under carriage panels. Fold the ends down. Swing round 180 degrees via the ball joint they're attached to. Fold the gun panel out to the sides 90 degrees. Swing the gun panels up and lock onto the sides of the chest with the missile arrays facing out. Fold Mandrill head down onto the chest, then pull the entire chest panel down. Resulting robot retains all the poseability outlined in the beast mode, plus a ball jointed head. Again he's reminiscent of Primal with the mapping of beast to robot legs and the simian face ending up on the robot chest. The guns on the side of the chest can be raised still - though the slider is within the chest - as can the main gun & missiles which are now on the back. Gun can be removed and used as a handheld weapon. Overall: Beast and robot mode derived from larger and better toy. Odd third mode that couldn't be used to it's fullest extent at the time due to no smaller toys. You won't find a huge amount of love for him floating around, but give him a try with some smaller TFs in Battlestation mode.

Scorponok www.tfu.info/1996/Predacon/Scorponok/scorponok.htmBy my reckoning Scorponok is the third TF Scorpion toy after the original Scorponok (and his repaint Black Zarak) Pincher and Elite Action Master Double Punch. OK yes, AM Devastator did have a scorpion companion... Scorponok is one of the first Beast Wars Mega toys released. He was in the first series basically playing dumb enforcer to Megatron before being killed off at the start of series 2 (They were Transmetalling as they fell - somewhere down there are buried TM Scorps & Terrorsaur !) so his popularity as a toy is enhanced. He has also never been reissued - a cruel error that could have given us some great Ultra sized double packs by putting the Mega sized toys in with basics. He's a scorpion, basically monochrome in black with red highlights - especially the eight beast legs. Close examination of the claws reveals they are a very dark purple colour. His right claw contains a dual missile launcher - open the claw and the missiles pop out. The left claw has a trigger built into it - click the trigger and the entire outer side of the claw shoots off to become a bee shaped drone. Both claws swivel at the wrist, bend at the elbow, swivel at the bicep, bend at the shoulder and move up at the shoulder. The tail has a lever on it which pushing makes the tail extend and jab forwards between the claws. To get it to work properly in beast mode you really need to hold the base of the tail as it's on a hinge and will bend forward as soon as you move the lever instead of the tail extending. TF: Turn the toy over. Fold the beast legs out to the sides as far as possible. Pull the head out and back exposing the robot legs. Fold one out to each side and then bend down & behind the beast legs. Flip the robot head up from the base of the tail and make sure the peg beneath it is pointing up. Fold the tail up into the cavity vacated by the robot legs. Fold the beast legs back. Turn the tail round. Turn the robot round so you're looking at the top of the beast. Fold the feet out and the beast head halves back as heel spurs. Bend the beast claws down at the shoulders to form the robot arms. Resulting robot hides a lot of the red away but reveals more of the dark purple on the lower legs. He has a very sinister gas mask style mutant head which open straight down the middle and folds to the side to reveal the Cyclops visored robot face we know from the cartoon. The tail is sticking out from his back and pulling the lever makes it sting above his head. Legs bend at the ankle & knee and are ball jointed at the hip. The head turns but is limited by the mutant face. Arms have the same articulation as the beast claws did, though the gimmicks have now swapped sides. The arms are a little (very !) oversized but somehow that looks OK. Overall: Very good toy. Possibly the best of the BW Megas. Long overdue a re-release ! Double Punch www.tfu.info/1998/Destron/DoublePunch/doublepunch.htmDouble Punch was a 1998 Botcon Japan exclusive. The name Double Punch is taken from an Action Master Elite toy that's as rare as Unicorn (or Unicron) droppings and if anyone actually bought one in the uk would they send me an email and tell me cos I never saw any ! www.tfu.info/1991/Decepticon/DoublePunch/doublepunch.htm Double Punch was a dead ringer for Scoponok's recolour (and minor remold) Black Zarak so he got called Scorponok (Just like Omega Spreem is obviously Omega Supreme and Turbo Master is Bruticus) by just about all the TF fans I knew at the time. This recolour takes Scorponok and molds all the black & red in clear red and the dark purple in a slightly different shade. It's a very impressive repaint. Forget trying to get one though ! Sandstorm www.tfu.info/1999/Predacon/Sandstorm/sandstorm.htmI think Scorponok is one of the few toys that's been used as two different convention exclusives. In 1999 he appears as Sandstorm - the black becoming a beige like bronze, the red becoming black and the dark purple becoming a bright orangey gold. Again another superb repaint.

Couple of interesting images to go with these: BW Wave 1 Dlx with Tarantulas in his early colour scheme as seen on some BW cards.
