Onto the Fuzors.
I sat down and did the prep work for the reviews today - for older toys I like to start with a list of the toys I'm reviewing, links to their TFU.info entires and links to anything out really relevant. In the Spychangers case it turned into an XL spreadsheet with molds across the top and series down the sides !
I thought the Fuzors would be an easy job: No repaints on the basics and at most one each for the dlx.
Shows what I know. One of the basics has been released in different colour schemes *FIVE* times !

SilverboltWhen 1998 came Hasbro decided they'd had enough of doing plain transforming animals and diversified the Transformers Beast Wars line. There would now be two separate ranges - the Transmetals, inside out BW toys with robotic animals and organic robots - and the Fuzors - beasts with two animals modes merged together. The whole toy is grey with some gold and black highlights. Silverbolt is one of the first deluxe Fuzors. He's a wolf merged with a hawk - the wolf forms most of the toy but he's got a feathered tail, wings on his back and elongated front legs ending in hawk's claws. The wings bend up where they meet the body. Each wing contains a missile that can be fired out to the side by a trigger on the front of the wing. The wings flap forward if you lift the tail feathers up - pull them up so far and the missiles discharge automatically in front of the beast. TF: Fold the wolf's head down under the body. Pull the arms out to the sides - a strut connects the top of the shoulders to the bottom of the body. Fold the struts down beside the wolf 's head and lock the shoulders together underneath to form the robot's waist. Fold down the fur behind the head to act as a loin cloth and lock onto the front of the waist holding it in place. Spread the claws out to act as feet. Pull the rear legs out to the sides - the front of the hips for these (about 2/3 of the way along the body is connected to the back of where the front legs were (1/3 of the way along the body) by a strut. Fold the strut forward and lock the beast rear legs onto the robot's shoulders. Fold the lower rear leg up onto the back of the upper rear leg and fold the front of the rear leg down to form the forearms. Fold the head then the chest plate up. Resulting robot is yet another with a Wolverine mask, but the dog face underneath it looks more friendly that fierce. Examination of the back of the head reveals a square block which to me looks like yet another aborted lightpipe eye. In the middle of the chest is an embedded red sphere that I'm sure would have been a spark if this toy was made a year later. He's got ball jointed elbows, shoulders and hips with bending knees & ankles and a turning head. Poseability is hampered by the loin cloth not correctly holding the waist together which cause it to pop apart whenever you move a leg. The wing flapping & missile gimmick is still in place here as is the ability to raise the wings above the toy. The feather missiles can be held as clubs in this mode. Overall: Fusion works well between the two beasts. Robot is slightly hampered by the waist & hips. Beast Wars Metals SilverboltBeast Wars Metals Silverbolt is a colour variation on Silverbolt - the grey is now much whiter than it was. The two can quite easily be told apart. Silverbolt was BW Metals toy C-41 and appeared in VS-41 with Rampage. He was the only deluxe Fuzor to be released during BW Metals. Botcon 1999 WindrazorAs Botcon exclusives go Windrazor feels like a bit of a con. He's very similar to Silverbolt, especially the Metals version but is molded in pure white. The gold highlights on the robot are now silver and the chest sphere is blue. It's not different enough to inspire me to go hunting for it. Universe SilverboltThen again different can sometimes be a bad thing. A very very bad thing. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you what is possibly *the* worst Transformer repaint *EVER*. Silverbolt swaps the grey for purple (!) the gold highlights for bright yellow and acquires a red and silver Energon pattern on his back as well as an Autobot symbol on the chest sphere. Awful, awful, awful. I've seen it, I can't unsee it. Avoid !

I challenge anyone to name a worse repaint than that. (Universe Op & Energon Strongarm are two close contenders)

I'd be hard-pressed to think of anything worse than that in honesty. Even wearing sunglasses isn't enough to protect one from Universe Silverbolt.

Quickstrike Quickstrike is the only Fuzor apart from Silverbolt to appear in the Cartoon and thus the only other Fuzor to appear in the Beast Wars metals toy range as D-45 or in VS-45 with Transmetal Airazor continuing the BW metals policy of where possible pairing a show character with a non show version of a character. Quickstrike is a combination of a Scorpion and a Snake - specifically a Cobra judging by the snake's head. The snake forms the tail and stinger of the scorpion so of the Fuzors this probably looks the closest to an actual animal. The majority of his body is molded in clear orange/yellow Plastic - one of the last Predacon's to be built like this - which is covered with metallic green patterns. The upper arms of the stinger and the tails are brown plastic and the fixed scorpion legs are orange. The claw arms have ball joints at shoulder & elbow, bend at the wrists and both parts of the claw move open. The scorpion head moves up & down. The energon chip rubsign is on the base of the tail. The tail has six segments between body and Cobra head with a ball joint at the top and a socket at the bottom of each giving the tail superb posability. The jaw opens on the cobra head. The toy's gimmick - they were still including a special feature on the Fuzor basics - is housed in the cobra head. Squeeze in on the under side of the head, place the head in water and release. The head is then filled with water and the next time you squeeze it it'll fire as a water pistol. TF: Pull the scorpion legs away from the base. Fold the scorpion head under the beast. While looking at the front of the toy turn the tail so it's on your left and the legs stick out the right. Look at the underside of the toy and fold the head out. Bend the very back of the toy 90 degrees - where the tail base meets 2 brown struts - then bend the struts down 90 degrees as well folding the head through the gap. Straighten the claws in front of the toy with the larger claw halves facing up. Open the claws out and stand on the claws. Fold both sets of scorpion legs together to form a claw. Quickstrike is unique amongst the scorpion TFs in that he's the only one (that I can think of at least - corrections to the usual address) that ends up standing on the scorpion claws. The rest - Headmasters Scorponok, Master Force Black Zarak, Pretender Pincer, Action Master Elite Double Punch and BW, Energon & Movie Scorponok - all use the scorpion claws as hands. So points to the toy designers for doing something original. Quickstrike's arms are formed from the tail (his right) with the same articulation the tail has and the other (his left) is from the scorpion legs and bits found under the toy. This has ball joints at shoulder & elbow and as mentioned above the oversized claw formed from his scorpion legs opens & closes. Legs have the same articulation as the scorpion claw arms and with a large foot base do a good job of balancing the toy. Overall: Superb basic. Covers all the basic requirements of the toy, throws in some extra articulation in the tail that larger toys don't have, shows some design originality in where the scorpion claws end up and looks great - a combination of the colour balance and the body parts cast in clear plastic. Quite possibly the best Beast Wars Basic ! Very surprisingly this toy has never been recoloured or remolded to make a normal scorpion basic !

Air HammerAir Hammer is one of a pair of basic Fuzors to be released first along with Quickstrike. Air Hammer takes the body, wings & legs of a hawk and adds on the head, tail and dorsal fin of a Hammerhead shark. In this mode the tail moves about on a ball joint a little and the mouth open - it's spring loaded and will snap close. The hawk legs are ball jointed at hip & knee and bend at the ankle. TF: fold the hammerhead and fin back and up. Look at the underside. Pull the hips out to the sides. Pull the body, mouth & tail up and forward so it's projected away from the wings.. Turn the body round 90 degrees so the mouth arm is on you left. Fold the front of the body down and fold the head up. Close the chest up. Fold the body further up so it locks flat against the top of the wing. Bring the beast hips together to form the robot's waist, straighten the legs so the red faces forward and position the wing. Standard basic articulation - ball joints at elbow, shoulder, hips and knees. He's also got bending ankles and a turning head. No hands - the spring loaded mouth ends one arm and the blade like tail ends the other. Adequate as a basic. The white of it makes it quite plain and it pales in comparison with it's case brother Quickstrike. Air Hammer was never released in Japan, hasn't been recoloured and was never remolded. This is it for this toy !

Sky ShadowSky Shadow is a Fuzor based on a Dragonfly & a Iguana. The beast mode is an Iguana with a Dragonfly's tail and wings. Most of the toy is green with a blue beast head & lower limbs and semi opaque orange wings. Some of the toy is covered in a red spot pattern. Articulation isn't bad: ball jointed shoulders and elbows on all four limbs, bending ankles at the front and ball jointed ankles at the rear. The lizard head has an opening mouth The wings: Two pairs. The lower move forward from the sides (but not back) and raise. The upper pair are linked to a little knob in between them that moves causing them to move back & forth. The missile launcher is a first for Beast Wars - it's a ball missile launcher, first seen on the G2 Cyberjets. No spring is required for these - the ball is held between a plastic clip and pushing forward on the missile causes it to be ejected from the clip with some force. Here there's a slider under the tail which you move to get the missile to shoot. The problem with the beast mode really comes when you look at it from the back. The tail ends in a missile launcher which looks the world like another head giving the beast a weird double ended "push me pull me" type appearance. It gets worse when you look up at the wings as the top pair of wings has a pair of insect eyes painted onto the rear of the bit in the middle. It's really quite confusing ! TF: Pull the head down & forward uncoupling it from the beast neck - there's a pair of pins that lock on each side. Fold out under the beast. Fold the neck halves down. Pull the back legs back above the tail. Pull the upper wing section forward and fold the lower wings back. Fold the front of the beast body up. Fold the front legs down 90 degrees at a pivot just behind the waist joint. Fold the arm the beast head is on down further another 90 degrees. Swing the beast head arm one way and the wing arm the other locking them into place as arms. Fold the chest back up. Fold the tail up through the neck halves so the missile launcher forms the robot head and the tail pegs on the back of the chest. Fold the wings on the chest towards each other and then back over the shoulders. Fold the front beast legs back beside the base of the tail. Straighten the legs, make sure the feet are flat and pose the arms The resulting "robot" has the beast back legs serving as the robot legs and keeps the articulation of them. The arms have a ball joint at shoulder & elbow. His left hand opens - it's the beast mouth - but for the elbow to be bent the head must be upright removing any useful holding ability the hand may have had. The other arm ends in a huge claw made from the upper wings with the opening & closing lever on the back of the forearm. The head turns and the missile can be deployed by pushing on the back of it. one of the problems I have with the robot mode is it does look like some sort of lizard alien rather than a robot (indeed the claw hand distinctly brings to mind the low production Swarm Alien toy) A quick examination renders no trace of any robotic features. Overall: Bit of a mess really. Released as a straight Iguana it might have been a lot better. X-8 DrancronDrancron's a Blendtron - a late Neo toy issued under the X numbering system. A reminder of the Japanese release order: Beast Wars (1997) Beast Wars II (1998) Beast Wars Neo (1999) Beast Wars Metals (1999) So by the end of Neo decisions were already being made about the Metals line and one of those was to only include the Fuzors seen in the Beast Wars cartoon. This left the other toys free and the three deluxe Fuzors were recoloured and used as agents of Unicron. If you look at the TFU.info page you'll see they have their own faction logo and I presume this is carried onto the Energon chip rubsign. Drancron is Beast Wars Neo Toy X-8. The blue becomes red and the green becomes a combination of darker green (body & tail) and cream (upper limbs and missile) The colours used here are a great improvement over Sky Shadow and give a better balance overall. This review was written under the influence of Alien Death Flu.

Noctorro Notrorro: A toy ruined by an action feature. Noctorro is a cross between a bull & a bat melded entirely in very dark blue plastic with gold paint over the top of it in places on the back and wings. He's got a bull's head & body, a bat's arms & wings and to be honest the moulding is so poor that the back legs - ball jointed at hip, knee & ankle - could be either creature. The front arms are pegged to the wings so should be immobilised save the ball jointed wrist but the pegs don't fit securely and have a habit of popping out making the ball joints at shoulder & elbow operational. The wings are the real problem though. The intention is that they're controlled by a button in the beast's back that when you press down on it both wings & arms flap together under the toy. In practice the wings aren't properly secured by the mechanism and have a habit of springing down if you look or breath at them. It's a pain in the backside especially as the default position for the wings mechanically is down but for display purposes you want them folded to the sides. TF: Unpeg the arms from the wings and fold the wings up locking the front of them into a groove on the robot's armpit. Pull the arms as far up as possible folding out the robot's shoulders. Look at the underside of the beast. Straighten the legs out and turn at the knee and ankle so the knee and the three toes face front. Fold the bull head down into the robot's chest and fold the robot head up. The robot isn't that bad - limb articulation we covered above but he's also got a waist and neck joint. The head has the bull horns sticking out the sides and is painted red - though the style of the head is more Predacon than Maximal. Overall: Beast mode wrecked by the gimmick is the dominant feature of this toy.

TerragatorTerragator is a Crocodile with a Turtle shell. Well it says it's a turtle but to me it looks more armoured dinosaur with lots of spikes round the edge. The beast is green with a brown shell. It looks quite nice, but the shell has a tendency to come off and needs remounting on the robot arm underneath which causes problems as the claws on the end of the robot arm which form some of the spikes round the shell rim don't quite line up with the rest so you're thinking the shell's in the right place when it isn't. Jaw opens in this mode and front feet & rear legs are ball jointed. TF: Remove the shell exposing the two arms running either way down the beast's back. The claw at the back is attached to the tail - remove the tail and set aside with the shell. Fold the exposed robot legs ending with the beast feet behind the beast. Fold the waist piece under the beast, turn so the screw on the waist and the robot head are on opposite sides. Slide towards the front of the beast a little. Unpeg the claw at the front of the beast and fold down the shoulder panel at the back of the beast. Swing the connected arm down. Fold the arm connected to the beast head up and then turn the beast head through 180 degrees so the arm hangs down. Fold the head up. Peg the shell onto the non beast head arm as a shield. Fold the gun barrels out of the tail and peg into the other hand. A surprisingly complex TF for a basic resulting in a thin but good looking robot - I suspect he and Neo Sling are related somehow ! Much of the exposed robot parts are blue including the legs, body and upper arms. Legs are ball jointed at ankle, knee & hip. The waist and the neck turn. The beast head arm rotates at the shoulder, folds to the side and has a ball joint at the elbow. The shield arm has ball joints at shoulder & elbow and bends at the wrist. Decent basic harmed slightly by the shell not staying in place and being hard to attach in beast mode.

TorcaTorca is a Fuzor made from an Elephant and a Whale - an appropriate combination as I've read research that indicates Elephants are descended from whale like creatures. The sides of the beast - legs, body, tusks & ears - are the elephants while the middle - mouth, back including fin & tail are the whale's. The toy is molded in a combination of blue plastic for the whale and gold for the elephant with the tusks in an ivory coloured plastic. The detailing on the elephant pieces is very similar to BW Neo Sabreback in it's general feel. His back legs bend at the top and the ankle. The front legs are ball jointed at the top, have a swivel joint above the knee, bend at the knee and have a ball joint at the ankle. The jaw opens. There are two gimmicks in this mode, both involving the whale's dorsal fin. Pull back on the fin to cause the tusks to come together. It's other function is a water pistol: If you pull up on the fin most of the back comes away. Put some water in a container, push forward on the fin, place in the water and release the fin to draw in some water. Place the weapon back on the toy and push forward on it to cause Torca to blow water out from about where his air spout would be. Interestingly this is one of the first deluxe toys to use the 5mm peg hole for it's hand so the hole left by the weapon could be used for mounting the likes of the Requiem Blaster on this beast. TF: Remove the fin & weapon. Fold the beast tail up. Straighten the legs behind the toy and fold down the heel spurs. Look at the underside of the toy. Fold the side panels back. Bring the ivory sections the legs are attached to down and in to lock together to form the robot's waist. Fold the jaw down. Split the beast head in two down the middle, turn each half so it faces out and fold down to the sides. Straighten the front beast legs and fold down to the robot's side to form the arms. Turn at the wrists so the fists face forward. Place weapon into hand. Another fearsome looking fuzor with an odd scary head - a bit gas mask like with the grilled visor lower down but almost Cheetor like with the eyes and the crest.. Robot is mainly gold, with a blue chest covered by the red of the inside of the folded down mouth. The tusks project up from the top of the beast. Thanks to a small projecting piece of plastic on the slot where the gun is taken from (and can be stored in robot mode) it's still possible to make the tusks move in robot mode. Arms have the articulation of the front beast legs, legs have ball jointed hips and bending knees & ankles. Incredibly the head turns and the gimmick still works when it turns ! Overall: Works for me as a toy. Decent combination of animals, good robot albeit one that looks a little odd and nasty for a Maximal. X-6 ElephaorphaElephaorpha is the Beast Wars Neo Blendtron repaint of Torca released as toy X-6. The dark blue remains the same, the gold becomes light blue and the ivory white gets becomes a little whiter. It's not a bad repaint, if not hugely removed from the original.

BantorBantor is a cross between a tiger and a baboon - tiger body and baboon head & tail. The rear legs have just a ball joint at the hip, but the front legs have ball joints at hip, knee & ankle. The mouth can close as part of the TF. The toy has a spring loaded gimmick - there's a trigger behind the brown fur that when pressed sends the entire head section shooting forward. TF: Unpeg the front legs where they meet the body, fold down under the beast and bring the tops together to form the robot's waist. Turn till the waist is flush under the beast's body. Fold the tiger striped it of body back to form an arm and bend down at the shoulder. Fold the other arm out from under the beast's mouth, the fold the beast head down to form the other shoulder. Raise the robot head by a lever in the back. Robot: Well he's got a huge chunk of beast on one shoulder and a pair of legs & a tail hanging under the other arm. The legs have the articulation of the front beast legs. The beast head arm rotates at the shoulder, bends to the side and bends at the elbow. The gimmick still works on this arm causing the majority of the arm to shoot forward. The other arm has a ball jointed shoulder & bends at the elbow. The head should turn but doesn't really raise high enough for you to be able to. Overall: OK beast but not great in the arm dept for the robot - limited articulation for a BW toy and lots of beast kibble.

Great reviews Phil. The fuzors never really worked for me, though I do have a soft spot for Silverbolt and Torca. Quickstrike always seemed a little too complicated for a basic (it would work better as a deluxe IMO) and the semi-transparency makes him look a little frail in robot mode.
Though he wasn't labelled as one in the toy or cartoon, Tigerhawk may represent the final stage in the Fuzor line.

I think I mentioned in the Tigerhawk review that there's some conjecture that he was originally meant to be an Ultra Silverbolt.
There's another later Fuzor as well: Magmatron & his Fuzorsaurus mode !
I like the clear plastic on Quickstrike.
I've struggled with a couple of these - and not just because I've been feeling sick as !

BuzzclawBuzzclaw is a fusion between a preying mantis and a lizard, molded in green and semi transparent orange plastic. There's some red detailing on the head & tail and the eyes & wing details are picked out in purple. The head, wings and forelimbs are the mantis, the back legs and tail are the lizard. His "arms" are ball jointed at the shoulder and bend at where the arm turns into a claw. The rear legs are ball jointed at hip & knee and bend at the ankle. The wings are mounted on ball joints. I've mentioned several times with the Fuzors that the robot mode looks like some evil alien. Here it's the beast mode ! There's a action feature in this mode powered by a small lever in his back - press the lever and the claw arms move about. TF: Fold the green flap on the neck up and pull the head forward. Remove the claws, wings and the section of body between them - it's pegged on. Fold the robot head up from the neck flap. Fold the beast head down onto the underside of the beast and fold the neck flap down behind it. Swing the panels the beast legs are connected to up 180 degrees to form the shoulders (and thus the legs become the robot arms) Fold the arms down and rotate at the elbow so the beast foot faces back. Separate the robot legs from under the tail, fold the tail back a bit, turn each leg so the coloured section faces forward and fold down the feet. Peg the handle of the claw/wing section into one of the hands. The same colours carry over into the robot mode - there's some red paint on the semi transparent orange head plus some neon yellow on the shins. We've got ball joints at neck, shoulder, elbow, hip & knee. The ankles bend, the waist turns and the tail can be bent back till it's horizontal. Buzzclaw has a peg on his left forearm that seems to serve no purpose whatsoever. Decent beast, decent robot. Best Fuzor basic after Quickstrike for me. Botcon 2005 BuzzclawUnlike all the other Fuzor basics Buzzclaw has led an interesting life as a repaint, all of them occurring in 2005 ! This Buzzclaw was sold as part of a set at Botcon 2005 (with Dirge - see bellow) Green becomes black, the wings and tail become clear red and the rest of the orange becomes clear purple. The beast eyes & wing details are red and all the rest of the paint work becomes pale yellow. Nice repaint, looks suitable decepticonish. Botcon 2005 DirgeDirge was part of the same set as Buzzclaw at Botcon 2005. Green becomes black, the wings and tail become clear red and the rest of the orange becomes a clearer orange. The beast eyes & wing details are red and all the rest of the paint work becomes pale purple. Another nice evil looking repaint. But two of the same toy as convention exclusives ? Botcon 2005 Virulent Clone(2 per set) Well three actually. The Virulent Clones were sold separately to the set Buzzclaw & Dirge were in and come in packs of two. I suspect the name is meant to bring to mind the old Insecticon cloning ability from the cartoon. Green becomes blue, the wings and tail become clear red and the rest of the orange becomes black. The beast eyes are red, wing details are black and all the rest of the paint work becomes pale yellow. There's a bit of me that thinks a mistake must have been made along the line: Surely these colours are more suited to Dirge's name ? But once again a nice repaint. This mold is leading a charmed life at the hands of the Hasbro repainters ! RepugnusFinally, but still in 2005, we have Repugnus. Repugnus was sold as a Universe toy with Overbite - a minor repaint of BWII Hellscream. This toy uses a variation on the G1 Repugnus colour scheme based on yellow & red: Green becomes yellow and all of the orange becomes clear red. The beast eyes, wing details and all the rest of the paint work becomes blue and there are some added gold highlights on the shin spikes and crest on the head. The claw weapon gains an Autobot symbol. Probably the best repaint of the lot, the yellow & clear red work good together, the colour scheme goes with the name, the name suits the mold (Repugnus was a clawed Insect) and the colours suit the toy. I need a Hellscream, might have to pick this set up !

InjectorPoor, lonely and unloved Injector. Well not so lonely cos there was always lots of Injector to keep himself company. A real peg warmer in the US he's not liked that well. I once sold an Injector on eBay by turning the description into a real sob story - I'd reproduce it here but I can't find the text. Note: it was one I got in a group of toys and was a spare - I wasn't trying to get rid of my own. Because actually I quite like him ! Injector is a cross between a fish and a hornet. We've basically got the fish's head on the hornet's body. The wings & the fish head are made of clear red plastic - the head's got a purple wash and some yellow spots as well as a yellow horn the body of the beast is yellow plastic, the forward two pairs of legs and the top of the rear pair are black and the back of the rear pair are a very dark purple. The forward two pairs of legs are ball jointed at the hip. The rear legs are ball jointed at the hip, turn beneath it, bend at the knee and have opening claws at the end. As you may be able to guess the rear legs become the robot's legs. The mouth opens on the head. The wings move up & down and backwards & forwards. There's two action features on the toy. The first involves a trigger on the beast body, nearly under the head. Pushing on this causes the beast to fire a missile out of it's bottom. Always a favourite that one ! The second involves the head - push down & forward on the mane behind the fish head causes the fish head to spring forward and the spines on the top of the fish head to spread themselves out. Doing this lets you (just) see the energon chip under the head. TF: Pull the top pf the striped section - including the missile sticking out the bottom - away and set to one sides. Fold the front two pair of legs under the toy. Fold both halves of the rest of the striped body out to each side to form the arms - revealing more of the dark purple on the forearms contained within the body section. Turn the beast head round. Pull down on the upper jaw to fold the robot face down into the mouth cavity. Turn the rear legs so the screws face towards each other on the inside of the leg. Spread the claws out to form the feet. Robot mode: well he ain't pretty. Very thin legs and arms, small body but huge head. He looks like some demented thing from a very ad nightmare after some particularly good stilton late at night. We've chronicled the leg articulation above, but he also turns at waist and neck. The shoulders swing forward onto the chest and behind his back. The arms has two rotating bicep joints above and bellow the cuff the wing is mounted on and he bends both ways at the elbow - these last two joints allow you to mount the missile launcher above or bellow the arm with a little bit of fiddling. He's not liked by many. He's an ugly toy. But I've got a little bit of a soft spot for him. I've played with far, far worse TF toys than Injector. X-7 RartorataRartorata is a Blendtron toy in Beast Wars Neo numbered X-7. He's a minimal repaint of Injector with the purple being a lighter lilac shade. I'm assuming the Energon chip is changed to a Blendtron symbol too. I can't really find a good reason to own both.

And we're done. All ten fuzors reviewed. I've not got a huge ammount of enthusiasm for many of them ! Fuzors are one of those groups of toys that I will admit don't fill me with a great deal of enthusiasm either. Some of them are very good - I'm quite fond of Buzzclaw and Tigerhawk (never heard the Silverbolt rumor. I can see how, with a different beastmode head, it might have worked though), but a lot of the others are just kind of there. I owned a fair number of the fuzors at the height of my interest in Beast Wars, but they were amongst the first of my Beast Wars toys to go.
