So Empire are doing a 100 Greatest Games feature and are asking people to submit their top 5 games. So what's your top 5? I'm trying to figure out mine, but it's tough. Hmmm...

I always struggle with things like this. Whilst I can draw up a big list of my favourite games, putting them in to any kind of order is a knightmare. However on this particular day I've gone for:
1) Animal Crossing 2) Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge 3) Street Fighter II 4) Tetris 5) Super Mario Kart

I think you gentlemen will find that Turrican II was /far/ superior to Turrican Maybe it is just because I had the infinite life cheat for it? Who knows!

LIES, LIES AND FALSEHOOD! Andy Well I can only go by what my 8 year old brain remembers. I had both Turrican games for the Amiga and I much preferred Turrican II

Mine is:
Championship Manager 97/98 Quake Final Fantasy 7 Resident Evil 2
and I'd have to keep an ever rotating 5th spot for loads of other games.

I'll post my list when I can think it through properly but has anyone noticed how many games featured are considered by many to be "retro" and there's a distinct lack of contemporary games in the list.
Says something about gameplay over graphics and technical accomplishments really...

I can pretty much easily complete any newer games without a sweat. I find older stuff much tougher and more challenging
And yeah, since they couldn't spend a lot of time making them look pretty, the time was spent in making them fun instead

New games confuse and annoy me. Where is the calming monochome, the relaxing beeps of the soundtrack and the sheer joy/terror of waiting for a long time to see if the game has loaded properly or has crashed? And games should come on chunky analogue tapes, damn it!

I always found such sounds comforting. I remember being able to tell which bits of games (levels, sound, etc) were being loaded just by the noises they made during the load proces.

They were good times, computer games loading meant time to read comics/books inbetween gameplay.

Although some took a bit too long. I remember the Speccy version of Outrun having a particularly long load time.

I loved the first three Monkey Islands. I liked the third one (The Curse of Monkey Island) the best though. Duelling banjos! Comedy chickens! Singing insults!
Going back to the days of the BBC Micro, Frak! was better than Chuckie Egg. My favourite space invaders one was Zalaga. Elite blew my mind, being 3D and all. My neighbours had a highly amusing barbarian fighting game where you hack at each other with swords to drain life energy, but it didn't really matter how much life you lost because you could spin and lop the other guy's head off at any time.
The only game I've tried playing in the last few years was Sacred Gold, which boggled my mind at the size of its world and non-linear story.

Elite was awesome!
There was a brilliant fantasy turned based strategy game called Chaos. It made the most frightening noise imaginable when you killed someone or they killed you.
And of course who can forget the joy of text-based adventures. The unbearable tension of whether or not the command to 'Look North' would suddenly result in instant death from a random attack by a giant frog or something.
