Spring is in the air! Take a deep breath! Ahhhhh, that's better.
The birds are singing and the bees are trying to mate with them.

I think clocks are going back soon. As long as you've kept the receipt, then I shouldn't think you'd have any problems.

Another week and another redundancy at my workplace. This time it's the factory manager that gets the axe. At this rate they'll be nobody left come December!

Spent much of the day playing with Nick's toy stock. Buy toys from Toy-Fu at AA. They've, er, been thoroughly tested in combat conditions!

Last night I went to my first Premiership football game (West Ham vs West Brom) in about 12 years and it was a drab 0-0 draw. Ho hum.

Strangely, earlier today it was the birthday of both Hugman and Batman. Now it's only Hugman's birthday.
Congrats on the pay rise, Karla.
Ken - the clocks go forward, not back, on the 28th - after the Earth Hour.

If you're American you can use the following phrase to help remember:
"Spring forward, fall back."
Well done on the pay rise Karla. I hope that's £1 per hour not per year!

Youtube must be either taking down clips of the Simpsons or their search function isn't up to much as I tried to find a clip to go with Graham's line about bees trying to mate with birds. If anyone else wants to have a look on Youtube then be my guest, the episode is called Homer vs. Patty and Selma (2F14), episode 17 of season 6. I couldn't find anything on Youtube and the closest I got was on a Polish video site.

I'm pretty sure that Youtube are getting quicker at ganking clips that breach copyright as soon as the holder gets in touch. I was going to link to the Daily Show interview that Jon Stewart did with Jim Cramer of mad money fame after ralph emailed it to me but that's been pulled.

An interesting day at work today. Due to holidays, sickness and other assorted coincidences, we had to open the shop with only two staff. For the first hour before anybody else came in we rattled around the place trying to put everything back in place after the annual floor-wax. Today I learned that a metal A-frame with a pool table on one side and a foosball table on the other is more than I can safely lift.

Got some weird bug-thing. Nose blockages on Monday followed by sneezing fits then most of yesterday with a dose of skitters. Today: headaches and fatigue. Most annoying! Still, I'll live. Looks a nice day so a stroll after lunch methinks.

Some good news here in that 'Make It Work' (who referred me to STRIVE) have agreed to pay my first week's travel for when I start my job, which makes a big difference as I have a very expensive commute. I'll need to move due to the high costs involved but due to being on the dole I can't move until wages start coming in.
Now, I've been unemployed since June 21st 2008 and did not sign on until December 1st 2008 as I felt the responsible thing was to use my own finances/resources to look for work before taking money from the state. So I did not sign on until I was literally down to no money to my name, having been unsuccesful in a job search at that time.
Ironically, if I had been signing on for 6 months or more I could claim money for work clothing and 4 weeks travel but as I have been signed on for less I am not entitled to this. Bear in mind that at my first visit to the Job Centre Plus the advisor specifically told me I would recieve "no help whatsoever for the first six months" (exact quote). So, really, to get the best help the plan really is to sit on your arse for six months! If it was not for the charity of family and friends I would literally be unable to take up the new job as I would be unable to afford the travel costs and so would have no option but to stay on the dole taking JSA money! I'm still not sure how I'll manage it and am proceeding mostly on hope. In my opinion the responsible thing was to apply for any suitable job irregardless of location, to improve my chances.
Amusingly, I am now required to report weekly to the local brew. Every Tuesday I tell them I am waiting on a start date dependant on a Disclosure Scotland check. But I've never been asked for any details, ie employer name, job title. No record is made of this. No proof is required (every week I have my job offer letter, just in case). It would be very easy to lie, because no-one would check.
It's a ludicrous system. Thank fuck for the likes of 'STRIVE' and 'Make It Work'.
