Am I alone in considering Gurren Lagann the best animated series ever made in human history? If you haven't seen it; you should - all of it from start to finish. I watched it a couple of months ago - well - over the course of the last few months. Honestly: I felt THE SAME as when I watched Transformers for the first time in 1980s. You remember that feeling? Not the feeling of nostalgia - no. Not the feeling of amazement at a "remake" - no. Nope. It was the first feeling of seeing an epic adventure with such scope and depth and with such compelling characters. It's hard to describe. Gurren Lagann is all of that. It has renewed my faith in the ability of animated series to inspire jaw dropping awe. It's also restored my faith in the pure goodness of ass-kicking giant robots beating the stuffing out of each other. It's a non-stop ride with tension mounting from episode to next outrageous episode. Have you ever gone partying on Friday and found yourself STILL dancing on Sunday Morning with other people who had absolutely no intention of going home? Have you ever danced through the entire week? Gurren Lagann is like dancing through the entire year. It's a party that just keeps getting better. It literally spirals out of control - it's well thought out, perfectly paced, the music is daring - because the show actually risks using house and techno tracks as well as metal - and the whole thing is one big scream followed by bigger screams. It's primordial in its' power. Go watch it Pete

I have yet to see Gurren Lagann. I have however heard very good things about it from multiple sources. It is one of these things that is on my list to try and see, assuming that it has had a Region 2 DVD release so I can drop it into the rental queue. I hear it has a nice line in over-the-topness, which might be appealing.
It might have to wait a while mind you, there is a fair chunk of stuffing building up in the rental queue that I fancy watching faster than I can actually get to see it at the moment.

I used to watch quite a bit of anime a few years ago and purchased a few series (mainly the smutty ones) on DVD. I have however lost interest in it at the moment.

You mustn't put it on any lists. You must simply watch it. All 40 episodes. Best to do in one sitting. You will NOT be bored. Every consecutive episode pushes the story forward in an absolutely revolutionary way. There is no "lull" in this show. Gurren Lagann is the best robots show in the universe. The designs are out of this world, the transformations are unabashadly, unashamedly crazy and "impossible," the characters are perfect to a T. People should be quiting their jobs, staying home from school, divorcing their spouses - doing whatever it takes to watch this show Pete

Gurren Lagann is too compact a show to merely watch one or two episodes of. Nothing will make sense because unlike many cartoons and anime shows, there is no "return to the status quo at the end of the episode." Heck, there's not even a division between "status quo" and "groundbreaking/status quo changing" episodes. Every single episode radically alters the direction of the story and pushes everything forward at breakneck speeds. Don't be thrown by the 40 episode size - each of those episodes is chock full of plot thrust Here's some people dressed as the ecclectic cast of characters (or at least some of the main characters): Fun Pete

I was confused because Gurren Lagann only has 27 episodes. Although there are two versions of one of the episodes (the first pictured in this thread actually) and there is also a 12 minute-ish ep that came with the DS game. People might be interested to know that UK DVDs start being released in June.

Whoops You're right Are the UK DVDs going to be dubbed or are the going to have the option of original audio with subs? Pete

No details yet, but it's being released by Beez who released Gunbuster 2 and that was sub-only so I would think getting subs is a good bet. <edit>: Some episodes have already been rated by the BBFC and it has the language listed as Japanese, so yes there will be subs.
There is a dub in Region 1, which as it exists wouldn't surprise me if it was included as well.

Well, I hope there's a Japanese audio with subs option - if so I'll be getting it. I believe my DVD player is the same region as the UK. In any event, Japanese BW DVDs work just fine on my laptop, so hopefully this will too. Owning Gurren Lagann on DVD will be well worth it Anyways - here's some screen caps to encourage folks: Watch it Pete

I watched the first episode on Youtube today and I must say that there was no shortage of drill-related penis jokes in it.

And now - feast your eyes on this Kotobukiya Plain Model (with emphasis on "plain") of the amazing Gurren! I spent a whole 15 minutes building him. His teeth have been whitened with MS Paint. Paint, is in fact something that could be applied - but I quite like it like this, because for photo-comic purposes the non-painted teeth mean that one can use photo-shop to give him different facial expressions. In any event, I'm sure all of you will agree that MP Magnus which is visible off to the right hand side there PALES by comparisson to this masterpiece of epic proportions: Yes - another reason to worship Gurren Lagann! Lies (or mere forgetfulness!) I told you about it months ago. I've only seen the first five episodes but I think I'll have to track down the rest now. Oh, and Pete- in that surprisingly good cosplayer picture, the turquoise-haired engineer dude up the back is nowhere NEAR camp enough, don't you think? -Nick

Well, maybe that's why he's in the back? In any event - it's the thought that counts Having said that, I'm surprised Ralph has yet to express his joy and amazement at my Gurren model. I would have thought it was right up his alley of tat Pete

They have more - I think there's a music video for almost every character planned as a way to explore the parallell lives notion that the anti-spirals presented as a possible alternative to reality. I wonder what Nia's song will be like... Pete

I read somewhere that the Part 1 DVD set is supposed to contain a load of extras though I can't find any details so not sure about that. I have noticed that there will be two versions though: a regular £34.99rrp one and a limited edition £54.99rrp. No idea what the difference is but I see Amazon are selling both versions for £24.98

The Tragic Story of Lord Genome... although the music is unoriginal (it features in the anime), its' use here is bar none absolutely fitting. I'm really happy Gainax decided to make these - and the format is refreshing too: Pete
