Patio is being finished today! Well, the patio is finished, they're putting up a mini fence thing to keep the dog off the lawn.
So now I need to get to the garden centre and pick out some nice plants to add a bit of colour.
Then I'll have a barbeque and everyone will be invited!

Karl is rather tired and probably wouldn't have noticed if you had....
It has been a hectic day, with the promise of more to come this week. I am almost envious of the swan that I saw yesterday, doing some maintenance on its nest - it almost seemed to have time to ponder the best way to achieve what it was trying to do, rather than having to take whatever measures would work and move swiftly on to the next pending task.....
Mind you, on reflection I am somewhat amused by something that occured when I was in M&S yesterday afternoon. Apparently they now have "M&S Energy" - yep, not only can you buy socks and things from M&S but you can also buy your gas and electricity from them. A woman trying to get people to switch over had a table right in the aisle next to the gents trousers from where she was accosting every shopper who passed buy and trying to talk their ear off about various deals. Except me. Apparently, in my civilian guise I do not resemble in any way, shape or form a responsible home-owner! (Which, on further reflection, is quite good - I have apparently perfected the perfect disguise and made my self invisible to sales-people ....)

I wish I had that ability, Karl.
I can never leave the house without someone asking me to;
buy something give them directions tell them the time give them money for the bus fare because their wife is in labour in a hospital in the next town help them send a text message give them my opinion about the BNP sit down and have a free trial on their massage chair
Maybe because I bumble along smiling to myself all the time, people think I am nice and approachable. If only they knew.

Life Support; Paedi Life Support; Medical; Trauma. Apparently I was excellent in all four *cleans nails on smoking jacket*. Two of my chumbs failed though, which was bit of a bummer. Still, I officially rock! Rock a Fat One! etc etc Just a bazillion essays to do now....

You know if you've got Green fingers you should see a doctor. Doesn't bode well on the circulation/infection fronts. While we're on thye subject of green body parts who was it who stuck their bits in a milk bottle ?

I have to take two buses to get to and from work, changing just before the city centre. It's a bit of a hike between stops (feels longer because much of it is walking in a straight line down a single street) but no big deal. Today I was running up behind my second bus, then passed it at the traffic lights just before the stop and figured I would catch it no bother. Glasgow City Council had other ideas however, and foiled my plans of catching my regular bus at my regular stop by digging a hole in the road next to it and sticking a bag over the sign.
Cue a frantic charge three blocks (and, luckily, another set of traffic lights with a grudge against motor vehicles) to the next stop and I still caught the bloody bus, but only just. What last week was a five minute walk has now become a six minute breathless sprint- something I could do without at half eight in the morning. It'll no doubt be like that for weeks now. Grr.
I could try dragging my carcass out of bed a bit earlier in the mornings I suppose, but I only stay about six miles from my workplace as the crow flies and I kind of begrudge setting aside an hour and a quarter to cover the distance in the morning traffic.

Karma to Cardiff Council.
For many months I've been bugged by thorny brambles dangling in my face as I walk along the pavement of the road between my house and Sainsbury's. I finally got round to e-mailing them about it. A week later - all cut back, no more nuisance.
A few weeks back one of the refuse collection vehicles damaged the cobble stones in the road outside my house. Dropped 'em an e-mail. Within the week, damaged area marked in yellow. A few days later, all the stones cemented back into place.
Often make a slight detour through the park on my way to work. A lot of work has gone into all those colourful flowerbeds. Sometimes see the Council's gardeners maintaining them. Yesterday I crossed the lawn to tell them they were doing a great job and I appreciated it whenever I walked through. They thanked me and said it was good to hear it.
Also still well impressed with the free bulky item waste collection service that has whisked away various things for me, from dead trees to dead computers.
The moral of this post is, if you want your Council to do something for you, ask 'em and they just might. It's what you pay your taxes for.
Anyone got any nice plans for the holiday weekend?
Martin

Karma to Cardiff Council. Martin Always nice to see a Council putting in the extra bit of effort. I was stunned when I was down at my mothers a few weeks ago. On a Saturday there were Council workmen out picking up litter from her street - and she doesn't even live in a shopping area or a tourist site. It turns out that it is common down their for Councils to make an effort to maintain the environment in the areas where the average taxpayer lives - rather than just those parts that generate business rates or attract folk from out of town. I am not used to this way of thinking..... As to the long weekend, I have a few plans. I am looking forward to not having to be in work. Between trying to get to grips with my new job, the reorganisation of the office, et al it has been a fairly stressful week. I am thinking that I might put my feet up with a good book, of which I have accumulated a goodly pile, and then watch some tosh on TV - and the Doctor Who special should fit the bill nicely. Other than that I may well take a wander up the canal to see how the nesting swan is getting along, or take of to Linlithgow or maybe a museum in Edinburgh for a bit and I still have that Valkyrie II model kit sitting on the worktop that could do with some work on it. So I guess I have plenty to be going on with. Karl

No long weekend for me as I work public holidays. I am, however, looking forward to a regular sized weekend which shall involve sitting in coffee shops and catching up on reading for fun and also viewing the new episode of Doctor Who. Besides, after 9 months on the dole, I'm in no rush for extra holidays anyway!

Double timing it at Toys'r'us on Good Friday, then double timin' it back home to drop off my stuff before heading back out to Christ the King for the evening service. Not working Saturday so planning on catching up on sleep and watching Doctor Who. Sunday will be Mass followed by visiting gramps and giving my uncle Ronnie some time away to ply his grandkids with chocolate ovoids.

Ah, what a way to end the week. I had a few plans for things I was going to do today, but when I tried to watch the news at lunchtime I realised that my digital television reception had packed up again. Three weeks from buying the digi-box this time, that is just about a record. Having spent two hours fiddling around with it, trying different cables, retuning it repeatedly. It is clear that it is much the same as the last two digi-boxes I bought. I.E, it has now ceased to work in my house and will probably never do so again. There is likely nothing wrong with it - there wasn't with either of the other two, one of which my sister has and one my mother - it just won't work here again.
I thought I'd sussed out what the problem was and managed to rectify it. But it looks like not. Ah well, I can watch BBC1 on my TV until they switch off the analog signal, if nothing else. Then my TV becomes simply a device for displaying the output of my DVD player.
To top it all I am currently partially deaf. I have acquirred eardrops in an attempt to rectify this. Of course, I forgot that they will initially make the situation more pronounced before they make it better. So there I was trying to cross the road outside my house whilst not really being able to hear oncoming traffic. A slightly hairy experience.
Really, it is all a piece with how the rest of the week has gone. This week seems to be ending in keeping with the beginning and the middle.

Does anyone else think the test signal is truly sinister? There's something wrong about that little girl, the clown and the game of noughts and crosses.
