Now this is a good example of a film that I suspect has only had about five fans in the entire world, but which can now count at least six. I've been meaning to see if for ages (after all it harks back to things like King of the Rocketmen so it had to go on my list to see at some point) so when it randomly popped out of my rental queue I knew that fate was telling me that this was the time.
Glad I did. Whilst it may not be terribly clever or innovative, it is a fun film with an awful lot of charm. There is a lot of love in the film for the old pulp/movie serial adventure genre that shines through, even when it is gently mocking the tropes. I mean, this is a film that has:-
A bloke flying around in a rocket pack, wearing an art-deco helmet, G-Men in thick woolen suits with Tommy Guns and bad tempers, Gangsters in far better tailored suits and matching tempers, a fantastic performance by Timothy Dalton as chief villian, and having the lovely Jennifer Connolly in a major role as the heroes love-interest hardly goes amiss either.
It is a fairly silly film, but it has a breezy quality to it, and a certain charm that makes me rather fond of it. It just makes me sad that the 1930's Adventure Serial kind of thing doesn't often jell with audiences. It means we end up going a fairly long time between attempts to do things like this.

Saw this at the cinema back in the day. Good fun, and the Daltonator is immense.

I saw the film on TV once and remember enjoying it to a certain degree but I haven't seen it again since.

Love the Rocketeer.
Timothy Dalton is indeed fantastic, but he is sporting a tache. Dalton+tash equals awesome.

Dalton seems to look a right nasty piece of work when he has a tache yet look like the typical good guy when he doesn't have one.

I remember liking this film. Timothy Dalton did make a good bad guy.
I'd definitely want this in my DVD collection if I didn't already have 'The Shadow' representing that genre.

The Shadow...... you've just reminded me that it has been several years since I last saw that film. I must add that to the rental queue in its turn.
Actually, if I can get them cheap I might well buy both that and Rocketeer. I have a bit of an affection for 1930's style heroics, and they would sit nicely along with Raiders and the Flash Gordon serials.
