Well if you check the producers comments in the R1 thread, you'll see that the sound and audio will be corrected as much as possible. Shout! only have the North American licence though.

I think I can probably resist this. I will say that they seem to be doing a really nice job with these sets, between the restoration of as many original sound and video elements as they can, to getting decent extras.
Not sure I like the Sunbow show enough to spring for another version of it, but if I did I would be sore tempted by this one.

The box design sounds nice and I think that will be the reason for a number of people buying it. Personally I wont because I've already got the Metrodome boxsets in a average-looking tin that I got with the S1 boxset.

I admit. If this was R2 I'd be tempted by the restored picture and sound elements.

What sound and picture elements are missing from the Metrodome editions?

They use the workprints* originally from the Rhino R1 editions so many many additional animation errors creep in that were not present on broadcast versions, ie snow falling upwards in the first Skyfire episodes. Also, Rhino added many additional sound effects to make a 5.1 mix that were never there. Details: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Transformers_(TV_series)#Issues_with_Rhino_Releases-Ralph *When remastering, Rhino would use earlier incomplete versions of episodes.

Which are the best versions of the boxsets to have. Upon checking my collection I have the original Metrodome R2 versions of Season 1 and Season 2 - Part 1 and the Rhino R1 versions of Season 2 - Part 2, Season 3 - Part 1 and Season 3 - Part 2 + Season 4.

They use the same masters so the only difference really is the PAL speed-up on the R2 versions and whichever extras you like most.

The SOUND, however, is NOT the same between the Metrodome and Rhino sets. Why? Christ knows. But it breaks down like'a dis. The 5.1 tracks all have extra noises on all the sets, from both Metrodome and Rhino. Through some unexplained technical error, however, the extra noises wound up on several of the 2.0 stereo audio tracks as well. On the Rhino sets, the extra noises are on the 2.0 tracks of seven episodes of Season 1, four episodes of Season 2 Pt 1, and every episode of Season 2 Pt 2, Season 3 and Season 4. On the Metrodome sets, however, the sounds are on the 2.0 tracks on ALL of Season 1, four episodes of Season 2 Pt 1, ONE episode of Season 2 Pt 2 and NONE of Season 3 or 4 episodes. So zudo, you... erm... you seem to have the... *worst* possible combination of sets.

Those extra sounds are so strange and annoying. Why did someone spend the time and energy to make something so annoying?

Possibly a misguided attempt to provide a 5.1/2.0 mix for material where the original sound elements were only ever meant to be mono?

I would think that is probably the case. If is something that rarely works very well when applied to animation. Adding sound elements to a mono soundtrack seems to tend to end up with a stereo field that lacks definition and spaciality when heard in stereo, and when listened to on a mono-rig can just be plain odd. (The remastered version of Robotech's Macross Saga springs to mind - which makes the Rhino sound-mix sound almost competent in places).

Problem is, such mixes are only designed with a 5.1 field in mind, so they always sound odd when heard through 2.0 or 1.0 equipment.

(The sound mix on the Metrodome stuff wasn't actually too bad on mono as I recall. At the bare minimum it didn't suffer from sound elements being completely swamped). Karl

Does anyone happen to own this release or know anywhere I could buy it that doesn't cost the Earth? It has extras not on the subsequent standard Shout Factory version that would be useful for Sunbow Sundays.
