Firstly, sorry for creating another Hyperdrive thread, but the WIP one is too full of pics. I finally (1 month later than scheduled) finished constructing the main robot. That gives me 20 days till I go to Botcon to get it painted and make a half arsed attempt at the trailer. But I really dont know what colours to make it. Ive coloured some pics but I dont really like any of them. I wanted to do a Powered Convoy scheme but it doesnt really fit the Turbomaster rules (black and a red head being the big two issues). Powered Convoy colours do work in lorry mode though so I'm working with blue legs at the moment. Anyway any ideas (or better still coloured drawings ;D)would be appreciated. Heres some pics of the more or less finished bot. The back is the last bit I need to work on, Im still looking for the right bit. Vehicle mode is HUGGGGGEEEEE!

I say decide on who the character Hyperdrive is first, then pick the colours after you've settled that. All I know about the guy is that Skyquake sees him through his super-sight scope. But who is he? An Autobot? A Decepticon? A mercenary? Assuming Autobot, is he a new version of Optimus Prime? If so, the colour scheme's pretty much there. Likewise if he's an upgraded Thunderclash. If he's neither Prime or Thunderclash, gotta get away from those colours to avoid confusion. Decide what personality you'd like him to have, and pick colours to match. E.g. fiery hot-head, white knight, dark warrior of the night, camoflage commando, imperial purple (tends to be a Decepticon colour)... or you could just do him muted grey colours to make him less noticeable in a city. Anyway, that's my advice. Character story first, then colours. Martin

How about a shared colour scheme with the original Hyperdrive?

How about a shared colour scheme with the original Hyperdrive? Hyperdrive, former member of the Decepticon Micromaster Sports Car Patrol... ...now reborn as a giant juggernaut? Could be. But the colours are a bit bright and cheery for an evil juggernaut. Martin

Good idea Martin thanks.
In the Generations book he's described.
Hyperdrive was a character planned as the showpiece or pinnacle for the 1992 European series of Transformers. He was to be the leader who stood above Thunder Clash. The mysterious warrior visible through Skyquake's scope is none other than Hyperdrive.
I gotta admit this years Botcon set has influenced me some with Thunderclash being a member of the elite Guard I've been picturing HD more and more like Animated Ultra Magnus or Impactor with the wreckers. Hes definitely not a Prime, if Prime is leader of hte Autobots, Hyperdrive is head of the milatary or at least one branch of it. Thunderclash is hyperdrives second in command meaning red and white get thrown out the window.
I keep coming back to blue but dont want it to look to Rotorstorm even though that would be pretty good. Maybe green or teal.

Impactor's colours might work, in that case.

Before you commit to actual painting, you could always try a couple of "digibashes" first?

How about a shared colour scheme with the original Hyperdrive? I was just about to ask if that was the Micromaster, but Martins answered that question already. Oddly enough I was toying around with blue and yellow but couldnt get it right but that might work. To keep with the Turbomaster scheme I'm probably gonna go with these bits in these colours. Except maybe the upper legs and more of the upper arms might go blue. Andy

Impactor colours?
That might work.

Edit: Digibashes are not something I've mastered. Orreally attempted really. But yeah your right no touching the toy till I'm sure.

First up the blue one it doesn't work but I really like the legs and the vehicle. Then the Impactor version, not the sure about it either, I like the fewer colours so I might o back and use fewer blues. Maybe the purples not right. IT looks more decepticon. Thoughts? Andy

A random mix here. All small to save time. Top left is the Powered Convoy version. Top right and middle right are two versions based on Hotspot. The bottom left is the most accurate Impactor version. The rest are just random colours though I do like the 2nd left on the bottom row. Basically the same as Hotspot but a grey chest. Andy

Hmmm, I'm finding myself liking them better when I imagine them with fewer colours. Most of them have several quite different colours, which risks people remembering Hyperdrive as 'the multi-coloured one', unlike mosts TFs, which can be described as 'the XXXX and YYYY one'.
I think it's partly the pink areas that give this impression, but also all that yellow. I mean, if I look at those two Hotspot-inspired ones and imagine them with all the pink and yellow replaced by shades of blue or grey, it seems less garish and schizophrenic.
If I had one suggestion then, it would be to limit yourself to a maximum of two bright colours, with one of them dominant, plus shades of grey. But that's just me!

Thanks guys, while I agree with Martin the problem is that what I'm aiming for is a colour scheme that might have been used in 1992 if Hyperdrive had gone in to production rather than one thats good. Not that it can't be both, but the big boys back then were big on colour.
Thunder Clash had a whopping 4 main colours on top of the standard Turbomaster transparent red and dark blue. Then still had a couple of sticker and paint apps on top of that. Even Rotorstorm who looks pretty tame had three colours on top of the turbomaster ones.
There is too much yellow though that needs to be reduced down to the odd paint app like on Powered Convoy.

Ah, I see. That explains why they are so psychedelic. Hmmm, well, I don't really think you can be colour-consistent with the 1992 theme and ruled by good taste at the same time, so... just do the best you can within the rules you've set yourself. Hmmm... my eye is drawn to the Action-Master Thundercracker custom in your avatar, and I think I see a pattern developing. Martin

Well I gave up on all this fancy digibashing and just grabbed my unused Thundercracker spray paint. Whacked it on some plastic and it looks fine.
Hyperdrive's lorry mode is now a fine Rover Pageant Mid Blue.

Is he going to have a giant trailer?

|
Post by Bogatan on May 13, 2009 14:59:24 GMT
Yup. I currently have a RID Magnus trailer, two thunderclash trailer, Energon Landmine trailer, Energon Prime trailer and a load of styrene. Its meant to fit with Thunderclashes base mode and provide a pair of arms to rescue Force Liokaiser.
Right now its just a pile or bits on the floor.

As all good kitbashes are just before the alchemy begins. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article.
I have, however, refrained from offering suggestions on the colour front, as I'm not convinced I have any real idea what colour works with what. (I have enough trouble when trying to decide which shirt goes with a given pair of trousers, let alone what goes with what on an alien robot.)
