In terms of things like dramas, serials, science-fiction, sit-coms and the like, which do you prefer, those made here in the UK or those coming in from the US?

In terms of things like dramas, serials, science-fiction, sit-coms and the like, which do you prefer, those made here in the UK or those coming in from the US? Depends. I like some US shows and I like some UK shows, and it isn't really a clear national divide to be honest. I mean, my two favourite TV detective shows are probably the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes stuff and "Homicide: Life on the Streets, one US and one UK show. And my preference pretty much breaks down that way overall. (Although in the Fantasy genre the UK has "Doctor Who" which pretty much gives it the win there.) I don't tend to have a preference that breaks down between different countries, just shows I like and shows I don't. (although if we could redevelop a stronger capability to do Cop shows well in this country it would be nice). Karl

I think at any given time the majority of what I watch will be US. Between 50 and 75%. As Ive been living in a Hostel during the week for almost 6 months I dont watch much TV at all now only whats recorded for me to watch at the weekends. Most of that are the latest episodes of the new US shows on Sky. British documentaries tend to come out on top though.

When it comes to sitcoms or stand-up comedy British humour always comes out on top for me. The Americans have a completly different style of humour which I don't find remotely funny. As for dramas and the like I'd go for American ones as they seem more fascinating. The same goes for movies. While the US of A comes up with some big budget action flick we respond with stuff like Four Weddings and a Funeral and The Full Monty.

I think you'd be hard pressed to show many british sitcoms from this millennium that are that good. Sketch shows, stand ups yes but sitcoms I cant think of many. During that period theres been some really good US one the best of which for me is Arrested Development.
But I get your point even if it is less true in some areas at the moment.

British sitcoms arn't all that good these days but back in the 80's and 90's there were quite a few I like. Blackadder, Red Dwarf, One Foot In The Grave, Only Fools and Horses and The Detectives are all classics that define my idea of a good sitcom.
