I have rewatched it relatively recently and I must admit that I have to agree. It is just stunningly terrible on every level, from story to costume design to set design. It is a perfect storm of everything going wrong at once. Karl What are you guys raving about? I love Gambit, it's a fantastic episode!

It has no redeeming features whatsoever and further proves that Holmes was a first class scriot editor but a highly variable solo writer.

I am pleased by the very loose link between this episodes and the classic Doctor Who story 'Dimensions in Time'.

"As far as I'm concerned you can destroy whatever you like. You can stir up a thousand revolutions. You can wade in blood up to your armpits. Oh, and you can lead the rabble to victory -- whatever that may mean. Just so long as there's an end to it. When Star One is gone, it is finished, Blake. And I want it finished! I want it over and done with, I want to be free!" Halfway there! This week we're watching the last episode of Blake's 7 series 2: B13 Star One! blakesevendays.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/b13-star-one.html

The BF audio story 'Warship' fills in what happens between the second and third series and where Jenna and Blake went.

Listened to the fan audio Logic of Empire last night.
Not too bad, good ending to the Blakes 7 saga.

Logic of Empire is marvelous - so in keeping with the feel of the opening episodes of the series. Very bleak, but fits together so well, and makes use of so many things that are already established in universe that it feels like a genuinely sound piece of logic.
I haven't heard the Travis audio, if it is on the tube of you I shall have to have a listen to it - I like Travis as a character so I'm definitely curious.

The Travis one is weird because it goes out of its way to paint Travis as A MISUNDERSTOOD HERO (I won't spoil it, but it retcons his backstory heavily so he is a SECRET HERO you see).
I had to heavily sigh at the second part being 'an origin for Blake's scar'. Very fannish.

Hmm. I can see how you could do something with a Travis who thinks he is a hero, whilst still being a butcher - preserving the system which protects the "useless masses" from themselves. It wouldn't be quite the same character as we got on screen (Travis One didn't strike me as a patriot - just someone whom the Federation gave the opportunity of official sanction to the brutality he would have engaged in anyway), but making him an actual hero would be rather a tall order.
Nevertheless, I shall track down Mark of Cain and give it a listen methinks.

"City..." Is great fun. It is basically a random Space Opera adventure which has little to do with anything, but is terribly entertaining. It is also one of the few episodes to remember that Vila is not an idiot -he just flunked his tests because he is too lazy to want to be an Alpha or Beta grade.
I also think that Colin Baker's Bayban the Butcher is great - sociopathic and narcassistic. Yes, it is a flamboyantly over the top performance, but given that the series definition of normal folks encompasses Darrow's Kerr Avon and Pearce's Servalan I'd argue that he isn't as much of an outlier as some people think -and I think it comes across as Bayban being caught up in and trying to live up to his own legend.

Halfway through 'disc one' of the audiobook of Darrow's novel 'Lucifer'. Its...not going well. And there are six 'discs'.*

*Technically, but I bought the download version. And may my bones rot.
