It's that time of year again: the internet security licence is about to run out.
I've used Norton for the five or six years I've had the computer, with some versions working well, others slowing the computer down badly.
I've decided this year to move away from Norton, rather than gamble on whether the latest version will slow the computer. I was wondering what software the Hubbers might recommend. I've heard that there is free software that is as good as or better than the big names.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thank you.

AVG Free is a good piece of free anti-virus software that is recommended above Norton in some computer magazines. They also do a pay-for internet security program as well. I have AVG Free on my computer but I also have a pay-for program on my computer called Spyware Doctor by PC Tools which managed to get rid of an adware program off my PC.

I'm using the current version of AVG Free as well. It does test very well in every group test I have seen, and it has a much smaller footprint in terms of system resources than Norton. There is also a paid-for version of AVG which has a few features that are not in the free version, but I seem to be getting by fine with the free package.

I use McAfee VirusScan at home and it is also used on all the Faculty computers. I've never had any problems with it and it doesn't get in the way when I use the internet.

AVG Free, Zone Alarm and Spybot Search and Destroy form my three-pronged assault against nastyness.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm giving Avast a whirl. (I was going to try AVG but there were OS issues.)

Well, I've learned not to rely on Windows Firewall. I spent the whole day dealing with a trojan.
Avast detected it but couldn't get rid of it, Spybot didn't detect it and Malware Bytes, which the IT guy at my Dad's office recommended to me, wouldn't install. I had to find and delete all the files manually, which I seem to have done successfully.
I came across a handy little piece of software online called RSIT.exe, which outputs all your computer's current processes and registry entries along with details of programmes installed within the last so many months. I was able to pinpoint all the files and locations thanks to that.
Strangely, over the same period that the computer's been infected, I've had a bit of a cold. Who said that computer viruses can't transfer to humans?

I have a suspicion that Swine Flu transferred to this country via the internet!

I've ignored the new AVG update thus far. It's a good job I did as well considering there's a problem with it.

Ah, so Linkscanner is still a little bit borked then? I shall remember that when I get around to upgrading.
But I was planning on turning linkscanner back off anyway. I've had to disable it on the previous build because it slows my laptop down to the point of being more dead than alive.

I had to stop using AVG when I switched machine as when it was on, browsers seemed to be bloked from the net.
Is Avast a shareware thing?

Yesterday I uninstalled Spyware Doctor from my PC because it wasn't doing its job properly. There was a low-risk adware program on my PC that I inadvertantly downloaded from an advert via Facebook and Spyware Doctor managed to pick it up but rather than delete the program it was only willing to delete the registry entries for it. This resulted in the program rewriting new registry entries on a daily basis and Spyware Doctor picking it up again every 24 hours after it had found it only to do the same thing again by only deleting the registry entries.
Anyway, I got fed up of having Spyware Doctor inform every single day of it picking up the same things it deleted the previous day and so I uninstalled it and updated my bog-standard Windows Defender. Guess what? Windows Defender picked up the actual program immediately and deleted it. Hopefully I'll get no more problems but I am gutted that I paid for Spyware Doctor only for it to be a bag of shit!

I had to stop using AVG when I switched machine as when it was on, browsers seemed to be bloked from the net. Exactly the symptoms I had. The fix described aboce sorted the problem.
