Since I never saw their original runs, I've been a lot more pre-occupied with the whole 'Beast-era' Transformers series of late. I was getting the second Beast Machines series on Wednesday when i noticed that G1 series 3+4 was going for a tenner. So i nabbed it.
Wow, nostalgia! I hadn't seen any of these episodes (bar the Five faces of darkness which i had already) in years. It's really strange that i remember so much about them. Particularly the 'Rebirth'. WeirdWolf is a legend.
What do the Hubbers think about the G1 Swansong?

I also got only 8/20 for the special features quiz.
Galvatron wasn't happy. Then again, he never is.

The third season is my favourite of the Sunbowverse. There's some really bad episodes but some really great ones too - and a lot of at least entertaining ones. Plus there's the comedy gold of 'Fight or Flee'.

Don't tell me where the set is going for a tenner. That way temptation lies. Five Faces of Darkness is by any rational judgement utterly terrible yet also intensely hilarious.

I've got all four seasons of the original G1 cartoon although most of them are the Rhino region 1 DVD's which, in my opinion at least, are much better than the Metrodome releases.

Does anyone have the answers for that quiz? I think the most I ever got was 18/20.
What bonus feature do you unlock with it anyway?

Galvatron actually steps out of the TV and plays with you for a while.
...In a good way.

What do the Hubbers think about the G1 Swansong? Honestly I don't like it very much at all. Most of Season 3 leaves me with a general sense of boredom. It does contain one episode that has a decent plot, and one that has really good animation. Unfortunately they are not the same episode - "Dark Awakening" and "Call of the Primitives" respectively. Other than that Season 3 seems to be fairly uninspiring - relatively low quality animation, and perfunctory writing. The "Rebirth" miniseries I felt was pretty underwhelming as well. It looked like it had a higher budget per-second than the last full season but the writing felt even sparser - pretty mcuh just a series of - here is another new toy better than the last in place of story for most of its length. Not really my thing at all. But other folks mileage will undoubtedly vary. Karl

I thought the original Transformers animated show was a thrilling 3-part series full of daring-do and inventive SF ideas. Very silly, and sillier as it went on but great fun to watch with an engaging premise and the plot has had a nice beginning-middle-end feeling to it.
Some other episodes were also produced.

I havent seen any Season 3 or 4 for a decade or so. I expect there are some I have never seen. After I get through season 2 (after more than 5 years I got around to buying part 2, though its the UK version) I'll buy season 3 and 4.
Rebirth and Headmasters rationally I know aren't brilliant but they are probably the first videos i got and watched them a lot. To the point that I could recite Headmasters word for word when I was 11. So I can't dislike them.

Exactly. I know they're a bit crappy, but the nostalgia level keeps me going.

Nostalgia affects my thoughts on the animated movie as I saw it in the cinema back in the day. I never saw the show until I was an adult, however, so nostalgia doesn't come into it there. We did not have a VCR when I was a nipper and I wasn't allowed to watch TV in the mornings so I never saw the show. I wasn't that bothered as I believed Soundwave and Grimlock's letters page propaganda that the cartoon wasn't the 'true' version of Transformers anyway! -Ralph

I never really saw much of the series when I was younger. Had a couple of episodes on tape, Heavy Metal Wars (which also featured The Girl who loved Powerglide) and Desertion of the Dinobots 1&2(Which today is still my favourite TF's episodes ever.
With the odd episode I saw at a friends house, the only episodes of season 3 I ever saw were Dark Awakenings and Grimlocks New Brain. It wasn't until I bought the complete series on VCD on ebay back in 2002, that I same 95% of TF episodes I have never seen before, including the dissapointing series 3.
I have to agree with everyone else about the only decent episodes being Dark Awakenings, Call of the Primitives and I have to saw Grimlocks New Brain, just as I love the big lug so much.
The first thing you notice at the start of series 3 is how poor the animation quality is compared to season 2. It is absolutely naff as naff can be.

Carnage in C-Minor aired last night on POP. That was some awful stuff...
As far as Season 3 goes, Call of the Primatives is a gem.

Call of the Primitives is only a gem in terms of animation quality - the story is an absolute turd.
Dark Awakening is the best written episode from S3/4.

Call of the Primitives is only a gem in terms of animation quality - the story is an absolute turd. Absolutely - the first time I saw it I remember you had given it fair warning, but I still wasn't prepared for how horrible the writing was. I learned from that experience to approach that particular episode on the basis of looking at the pretty pictures and trying not to let the dialogue or story seep through to reach my mind. (Does look like it has the animation budget of a whole season spent on it though). Candidate for best written of the Sunbow run to be honest. (It trails not far behind the initial miniseries in terms of watchabillity for me) Karl

Doesn't S3 have Grimlock in what's effectively a tux?
How can that be wrong?

I've just started re-watching season 3 after finally finishing off seasons 1 & 2 amd it really is so disappointing in comparison. FFOD is utter cack, but there is one small redeeming factor for me as at least it has citybots. Trypticon versus the mini Autobots is gold.
