Just got Star Convoy off Shopping Mall Japan, and I absolutely love him! Yes, he's a brick with damn all poseability, but he looks great, and I love the fact he has motorised treads.
Plus Micromaster Hot Rod is brilliant!

He'd be a lot better if his base mode wasn't so cack. www.tfu.info/2005/Cybertron/StarConvoy/basemode.jpgI mean, come on! Just having his upper torso like that is terrible, at least make it so the head folds all the way back and is hidden and the arms point upwards like towers a la Ginrai.

Oh yeah, see that red connector thing with two swivelling things inside it? What is it used for?

I was so excited to get Star Convoy but thought it was shit. I usually love bases but it did nowt for me and has been flogged. Micromaster Rodders stayed though as he is tops.

I *kinda* liked the base mode, although it's a piss-poor effort.
But the motorised launching of Micromasters via ramps and buttons makes it for me. I'd have loved him as a kid.
From the waist up he looks great. I love the shoulder guns too.

He does have some of the most awesome box-art of the original run of toys. I'll give him that. Got it printed in one of the Japanese TF picture books and it's just lovely. Full of life and dynamic.

The box and manga art was the primary reason I wanted him. SUCH a cool looking guy.

Oh yeah, see that red connector thing with two swivelling things inside it? What is it used for? It connects to Grandus' ankle to run his internal lift and spinning radar dishes off Star Convoy's motor. Running Star Convoy's conveyors back and forth runs the lift either up or down. The whole shooting match together is quite a sight to behold. That was why I went out scouring Yahoo Japan for Grandi as soon as the reissue was announced. Sadly the Brave version of Grandus, Dugbase, does not have the appropriate connector. Perhaps if it did, they would not be so cheap online. -Nick

Star Convoy is one of those toys that had a reputation that perhaps outstrips the reality of the toy. Once seen in the plastic he was extremely disappointing. I was glad that I hadn't actually shelled out for one myself to be honest, because I suspect he would have been resold extremely swiftly.
As Ralph observes however, he does have absolutely superb box art - dynamic and with a lot of energy. It does a lot to try and sell the toy. Which is a good thing because Star Convoy needs all the help he can get.

I will probably end up picking up a Star Convoy eventually - but the unrealistic alt mode combined with the extreme brickishness plus the base mode that is just the robot doing a leg split...err...well...it's just not good.
The design is great, and I'm sure that along with tons of Micromasters he'd be lots of fun - sort of - but I think the execution is probably the worse I've ever seen in G1.

I notice that Star Convoy is in stock almost everywhere last I checked - a long term shelfwarmer he...
Although - it's actually kind of too bad. Takara-Tomy could get the wrong idea and figure that obscure "fan loved" reissues are a losing proposition after all...
I mean - the guys who decided on reissing Star Convoy probably thought he'd fly off shelves, the heavens would open and God would appear - just so He too could buy one...
Which is pretty much what we should WANT them to think - I mean - I am fearful of the following scenario:
Japanese TakTom employee: Hey, let's reissue Victory Saber! The fans love him!
Japanese TakTom employee2: Last time you said that about Star Convoy and behold his fate!
Not a scenario I would like to see played out...

Galvatron ain't exactly short of stock either.
Isn't there something VS in the works ? Didn't I see some pictures of an articulated version in the back of some con promo photos the other week ?

Star Convoy reissue was pre Tomy merger. Takara's first reissue mess up was with God Ginrai, and they made a few mistakes after that, Star Convoy being one of them. When the initial line up of Encore was announced I thought TakaraTomy was making more mistakes, but they've since proved good with reissues I hadn't even considered.

I personally don't see God Ginrai as a mess up I love the thing to death. It's big, it has lots of chrome, it has so many fun different modes, it has three characters - One of my favorite reissues. dyrl

GodGinrai sat on the shelves and sat and sat and sat. In commercial terms it was a huge mess up. Then the Hasbrop version did the same thing.
A shame cos it's a good toy. A little tweaking and it'd be a great one. And the little tweaking done to it over the PM version shows how much better it could be.

Well - this is true. As for shelf-warming... I'm actually surprised that Galvatron and God Ginari warmed shelves for so long...very wierd...
But then again - I guess I somewhat understand. G1 Reissues that represent real vehicles sell well despite having "brick like" retro-robot modes because the die cast metal "real vehicle" catches peoples eyes.
Star Convoy, God Ginrai and Galvatron all have "fake" alt modes - and when you compare the goofy fake alt mode + goofy brick robot mode - lots of folks might have said "bleh"
Nevertheless, I'm still thankful and I actually personally love God Ginrai and anime color Galvatron.
Star Convoy just doesn't sit well with me.

I personally think the God Ginrai re-issue is a cracking toy and I recommend it. Fairly cheap to pick up. It did indeed perch on the shelf-warm event horizon for quite some time. One of those cases where Takara appear to have made more than there was demand for.

There aren't many Predakings around now, either. He was massive and very expensive (75 quid at retail?) but vanished in short order. You never know who's going to be massively popular and who's going to bomb.

Yeah. It's a bit of a lottery. I was after the Predaking re-issue but lacked the cash when it came out. By the time I scraped the cash together, it was gone. I wept buckets. Exact same thing happened for me with Soundblaster.
No Predaking or Soundblaster for Ralph. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

God Ginrai you can almost understand. After all it's not hard to lay your hands on a 2nd hand PM Prime. On the other hand the differences plus having the rare and desired God Bomber in with it should have made the package sell.
Star Convoy was rare. And still sat. Which is a shame. I love mine.

It also means almost certainly no Dai Atlas reissue, despite him being a far superior toy to Star Convoy. Tis a shame- it took me years to track down an original for a sane price, and I'd like the wider TF audience to enjoy him as much as I have but there just aren't enough out there on the secondary market!
