Just for fun.
Pick any Marvel USA Transformers story from issue 14 onwards and replace any newly introduced characters with a member of the cast from issues 1-13.
The idea is to imagine all 80 issues of the comic featuring (for the most part) just the original cast from the first 13 issues.
Who would replace who in which stories, and why? And are there any new characters that just can't be replaced without changing the story?

Interesting question. Less on a character, more a 'dynamic' viewpoint, the Decepticon Civil War near the end wouldn't have worked with 3 jets, Soundwave and some cassettes

Well, take Blaster for instance. The whole Autobot renegade storyline when he went awol with Goldbug could have been done with someone else, but Blaster was introduced as being one of the resistance left on Cybertron, so you can't really replace that story with Ark characters., so can you replace Blaster or Perceptor and so on? Having said that, I guess you could replace the Headmaster characters by simply having the 1984 characters go to Nebulos. Fortress Maximus and Scorponok weren't really necessary.
Thunderwing could have just been Starscream easy enough.
I don't know about the special teams, they don't really seem pivotal to the ongoing story but it's hard to say 'oh, in that story with Superion, that could have been xxx'.
Omega Supreme is pretty unreplaceable.

Ooh, good thread, distracting me from otherwise doing my annual story.
Remember, by issue #14 we had Shockwave, Jetfire, the Dinobots and the Constructicons. And if you interpret the artwork in US #4 loosely, Reflector.
So you could definitely have a Decepticon civil war.
Obviously none of those characters could literally fill the role of characters in later character introduction stories, because you can't introduce them for a second time, but I don't think Graham meant it that literally.
You don't need the original cast to go to Nebulos to become HMs and TMs - they could have done that story on Earth. Likewise, you could have made as many of them as you like into Pretenders and Powermasters.
Obviously, none of them could fill the role of unfamiliar character arriving from the future, nor the role of leader of undiscovered Cybertronian Empire.
But characters like Divebomb, Blaster, Bludgeon, Thunderwing, Ultra Magnus, etc. could have been done without introducing new characters.
Blaster/Goldbug - Jazz/Bumblebee Skids - Hound Thunderwing - Starscream Divebomb - Buzzsaw Ultra Magnus - Jetfire Bludgeon - Ravage (possibly) Fortress Maximus - Optimus Prime Sparkabots - Cliffjumper, Gears and Windcharger Battlechargers doing graffiti - Frenzy and Rumble
Scorponok I'm struggling with. I can't see any of the #1-13 Deceps filling his shoes.

May the Autobot Cassettes strike me down for saying this, but I like the idea of Jazz instead of Blaster becoming disenfranchised with Grimlock's leadership.
Actually, all of your choices above I would agree with, Martin.
