During the Battle at the Pyramids (I'm sure there should be a colouring book with that name), did a load of protoforms come down from space upon Megatron's order and then scan whatever vehicles were available to them? And did some merge into Devastator and others mosey off to tackle the rest of the Autobots/NEST?
I seem to remember Long Haul and Rampage in the village after Sam and Mikaela before they get to Prime with that Matrix Powder.
And are some of these chaps the same Constructicons that were originally on the boat who dived down to revive Megatron?
And is the Mixmaster who was in New York the same as the one on the boat and then in the desert?
What the hell happened? Am I making any kind of sense?

It really wasn't clear what was going on with the Constructicons, was it? There were definitely at least two sets, as they were in the desert battle whilst Devastator was off at the quarry and pyramid.
The thing is, there wouldn't have been the confusion if there had just been one set, the one that formed Devastator. That way, it would have been safe to assume it was the same team throughout the film. We wouldn't have been left wondering how many there were, if some or all were drones, whether there was a ridiculously bizarre continuity gaff and so on.

I did initially wonder if the individual Constructicons were supposed to do their bit and then fall back to form Devastator as more of a climax, and the mix up was due to editing changes.
I think only Rampage was actually named, when told to reveal Sam's parents. Sam's mother must have thought she was still stoned, seeing all that lot going on!

The quarry sequence was the scene I saw as an animatic at Toy Fair. Even in that form, it looked climactic. I think they missed an opportunity in not using Devastator as more of a climax.

I don't think it was editing. After all, Bumblebee killed Rampage, who was referred to by name by Megatron, while Devastator was climbing the pyramid - and then got killed by rail gun.
For what it's worth, when the Decepticons landed, one of the humans said, "I count thirteen." I don't think that counted Starscream or the tiddly Insecticons. Quite possibly didn't include Megatron. It may not have included the seven Constructicons who formed Devastator, and appeared to be lurking in disguise for some time (guarding the pyramid weapon, I suppose, whose location was always known to them).
One hypothesis is that seven Constructicons were there already in disguise (who became Dev). Maybe they weren't individuals and only had one brain between them. Then another thirteen Deceps arrived to fight the main battle - these could include seven Constructicons with individual names and personalities, plus Ravage, the one that turned into a cannon, and a few others for cannon-fodder.
I've probably just thought about it more than the writers ever did, which isn't a healthy thing.

Maybe the Constructicons are mass-produced drones, like Dreadwings in the comics.

Now my head hurts again.
But, Martin, I need more insight from you! What about Blackout/Grindor? That helicon in the forest had a new head and lighter colour scheme from Blackout. Who was he? And where did he come from?

Well since toy Devastator has its own set of constructicons without individual robot forms I was happy to accept at least two sets in the movie.
I dont see it as clones/drones maybe just that Starscream (or some Decepticon spy or scanning the internet) took scan info for certain vehicles that he felt would be useful. Blackout and Brawls forms and the construction vehicles. After all the autobots can land and just scan something nearby because they are trying to stay hidden. The decepticons will always want to be ready to fight, but aren't likely to happen to land right next to a tank or a jet so they arrive with pre selected forms ready to use.

I can happily accept that more than one Transformer can have the same vehicle mode, particularly something practical/specialist like a tank, but I just don't find it credible that they would have the identical robot mode, especially the same face. The robot scans and becomes the vehicle, not the other way round. Even the twins had slightly different faces.

They should have recoloured the toys.
Demolisher & Scavenger are the same one - the big red digger earth mover with white arm. But one is killed at start of film & other is Dev's shoulders.

I have finally put my mind to rest regarding the ROTF Constructicons.
If I think of them as Vehicons (one general, many drones) I can now drink my Ribena without the need of a straw.
