Envies Andrew Borkett. No snow yesterday in Cardiff until the evening. Went to Birmingham and back on the train for a meeting, no problem - though I know the Cardiff-London service was down. About an inch deep in Cardiff this morning, melted by lunchtime. What annoys me is the adult bias of the news. "More misery on the way," etc. It's not miserable for the millions of children, that's for sure! Grown-ups should try to remember the infinite pleasure of those few days in their childhood when school was closed due to snow, and the wonderful play they enjoyed, rather than moan about the inconvenience. The kids will catch up with their studies soon enough, but happy childhood memories are made of weather like this. ( This story has partly fuelled this rant. Karma to Shockprowl for taking the Piglet sledging! I walked through the park on my way to work about 7.45 this morning as some children ran out to start a snowman. I'd have liked to stop and watch, but that sort of thing is frowned upon these days. Sigh.) Replace the headline "Snow causing further disruption" with "Snow causing happiness and joy for millions," that's what I say. Martin

The snow had all gone here by 7AM this morning, the only weather we have had today is rain sadly. I'd like to second your observation about the fact that a good heavy snowfall doesn't necessarily make everyone miserable. When I was on my way home from work there were a large number of folk sledging down the steep slope by the side of the railway line through Falkirk High Station. It was a great thing to see, folk out enjoying the weather. I remember thoroughly enjoying the snow myself when I was a youngster.
For that matter, I still do. Whilst everyone else was looking out of the window on Monday and frowning I kept going up the window to look outside at the falling snow and grin. (Those who've seen me grin can no doubt testify to the likelihood of this greatly disturbing my colleagues). It is definitely my sort of weather - just a shame it only lasted a day.
(I do agree that we seem to have managed to comprehensively destroy childhood in this country. Whether this has come as a result of exaggerated fear or quite what I am not sure, but a whole generation seems to have grown up without a lot of the experiences that enriched our youth. They may well be richer in material things, but I'm not sure that they have benefited from the same diversity of childhood experience that we did.)

Snow has started again, but it's pretty light and would have to go on all night for any hope of it lying.

I enjoyed watching last night's storm more than I did Revenge of the Fallen! It was so cool! Proper forks of lightning, big claps and long rumbles of thunder. I've never known anything like it. I could feel one thunderclap through the walls, another was shaking the glass in a cabinet. After it got dark, one flash of lightning lit up the sky so brightly that a street lamp went out, as if it was daytime.
I love extreme weather!

It seemed so hot yesterday that it seemed cooler in the Faculty building than it was outside. I'm wearing shorts at work today.

We've had pretty reasonable weather today. Its not been hot and its not been cold. Its just nice and thats the way I like it.
Believe it or not I've had a bit of trouble writing what I've said above. I've just drunk eight cans of Caffrey's and am feeling fairly light-headed. I've had to go back and correct my spelling just to make it readable!

Just a shout out that here in Poland we're having the coldest, rainiest summer on record (by "on record" I mean "in my memory" which means "in the last few years" ) .... Even on "clear and sunny" days it's still rather cool for the middle of the summer and it's not at all uncommon to wear jeans and a long sleeved shirt. These "clear and sunny days" quickly become "humid" days by late afternoon, sucking moisture out of the space-time continum only to rain torrential deluges on us all. We're all doomed. I just wonder - given this cold summer - will the winter be freezing? Pete

A nice day here today. The weather seems to keep going from rain to sun in an instant as if somebody is using some kind of weather machine for a laugh!

It turned very hot in Cardiff around mid-morning. Hotter in London though, apparently. Had a UK-wide teleconference (audio only) in which Whitehall colleagues confessed and apologised for not wearing ties. (Not wearing ties to work is quite normal outside London, but a big deal for these guys.)

I used to wear a tie to work, but I stopped doing it when I realised that a) I was the only person in the office who did and b) it tended to intimidate the clients.
In the weather we've been having this afternoon I am glad of the lack of a tie. It started out pretty chilly in Edinburgh but by lunch-time the temperature had spiked up to quite high, and it promises to be warmed later in the week.
Not sure that I am looking forward to that...

I have noticed one of the chaps does not wear a tie, but he's been there for years. I'll probably make the tie intermittent if I get kept on before it vanishes.

Standing in a metal box for four hours in this heat is not fun, by which I mean the delivery truck that today appeared to have been lined in Bacofoil. The 30 x 75Kg 14ft trampolines weren't appreciated either. One of our managers (Davey, a really nice bloke and one of the rare hard working types) did a real number on his back and has been carted off to A&E. The trampolines are supposed to need two people to lift but it's common due to time constraints/staff shortages for a single person to wrestle them onto carts for transport out to the car park. I suspect that's what he was doing at the time. Poor sod.
Anyway, it's friggin' hot and the schools are off. Tempers will inevitably fray. I want it to rain.

We're all in tee-shirts at work today! It's so hot! The paper is curling, the ink is drying out. We might have to invoke the "Act of God" bit on our terms and conditions and go out for cocktails instead.

Its a heatwave down here but, according to some people, we'll be getting thunderstorms later on in the week which will be quite welcome.

The weather has been odd around here. It was cool enough this morning for me to need my fleece on the way into work, and it got quite foggy as we approached Edinburgh. It warmed up significantly during the day, to the extent that we needed to kick our airconditioning into life by mid-afternoon. (Now that it is repaired and no longer dumps large amounts water into our committee room).
In Falkirk it clearly got a lot warmer during the day as well, as I returned to find the house at oven temperatures and have thrown open all the windows this evening in an attempt to cool the house down. It has been 23 celsius upstairs in my house at eleven thirty at night for a good many days.....
A little too warm both by day and evening to be within my most efficient operating range.

I suppose I'm fortunate enough to work in a factory that has to be cold in order to store the fresh meat that is produced there. It's only when we go outside for whatever reason that any of us actually starts to feel the heat.
