About six weeks ago, the road on our street was resurfaced. They didn't do a very good job, as a pothole appeared a week later. But that's not what I'm writing about here. Earlier, there was an odd sound outside. Looking what it was, I was surprised to find that it was a lorry painting lines down the middle of the road. The surprise was, we didn't have any before. The daft thing is, they didn't inform anyone they were doing it, which means only sections of the road have been painted because they had to drive around parked cars. It's pointless there even being lines in our street, as there are always parked cars because there are no drives or garages and there are shops in the street; people have to drive down the middle. They should have just repainted the junctions.

Go go gadget pointless public spending!!
On the other hand, they are keeping road paniters in work, which is good for the economy, or something.

Cycle lanes are another anomaly that the local councils are so fond of. There is one such cycle lane in Leicester which is so small you wouldn't even be able to stand a bike up inside it without one of its wheels straying outside of the cycle lane boundary!

On the other hand, they are keeping road paniters in work, which is good for the economy, or something. They haven't painted the junctions back in yet, though. There's a one-way street in town, which, not long after a bicycle lane was constructed (actually constructed, not just painted in), had its direction reversed, rendering the bicycle lane, which was fairly pointless to begin with, as completely redundant. Over the last few years, the council has converted some pavements into split pedestrian/bicycle paths, painting a load of lines on them. It looks horrendous, worse than graffiti. Graffiti with planning permission. I used to walk to and from work along one of them for most days for two years and I think I only ever saw two people cycling on it. Don't get me started on the walkway.

The picture of the cycle lane with a telephone box plonked in it makes me laugh. It seems that the councils in this country just don't give a shit!
