That's sad. I grew up on classics they made such as Chorlton & the Wheelies, Jamie & the Magic Torch, Dangermouse, Count Duckula, The Wind in the Willows etc. etc. etc. (just goes to show how good they were!).
It doesn't surprise me however that this will happen. Kids TV isn't what it used to be. Back in the 80's there was a policy that most of the programmes had to be British hence why only season one of Thundercats was shown in the UK and a number of other American shows never finished their run over here. These days most of the kids TV shows are American and this is putting the British production companies under threat. The fact that a number of surviving British producers would rather use expensive CGI over much cheaper stop-motion animation or cartoons doesn't help either.

It's been looking ropey for CH for quite some time and given their current status it's not surprising.

Very sad news years ago Cosgrove had it's own training programmes for staff and really was the center of British animation. By the time I left uni the training had already gone and it does seem to have been down hill since then, but reading one of the linked articles is seems that the animation industry is doing well in Manchester filled with the former CH employees so it seems down to poor management by ITV rather than creative problems which makes it even sadder.
But then thats not surprising as ITV seems determined to axe anything of quality. I know Primeval was not the most popular show on here but it was popular and of increasingly of good quality, but was axed not because it wasn't profitable but because it was too expensive to make (which apparently isn't the same thing).
Easier to make more Jeremy Kyle type crap or Pride of Britain than invest in shows that will last.
Rant over.

Cosgrove Hall are legends and even if the company finishes their legacy will not. They made so many great shows that I doubt any kids TV production company in the present or future will ever reach the heights that CH did.
They were also known for hiring the best people of the day for their shows. David Jason did voices for Dangermouse, Count Duckula and Wind in the Willows, former Screen Test host Brian Trueman wrote many CH series (and also voiced a few characters) and Paul Nicholas (a notable star in the 80's) narrated Creepy Crawlies. Animation studios these days hire big name stars to voice characters but they only did it because the actors were well known and not because they were right for the part. Can you name anybody other than David Jason who was perfect for the voices of Dangermouse, Count Duckula and Toad from Wind in the Willows?

And to further convince me ITV wants to destroy scripted non soap TV in all it's forms they have announced the axing of Kingdom. I didn't watch it often, but what I saw of it was great stuff and rating for the last series were good by modern standards.

Well, ITV essentially axed almost all nonscripted drama other than soaps and already comissioned and paid for material that was in production earlier this year so no surprise. All ITV have for the next couple of years is their inventory material and soaps. Also, they have a new policy not to show drama before 9PM unless it's a soap. STV (the scottish part of it) have stopped showing almost all of the drama output anyway and are being hilariously sued for it. I don't think they will remain a 'main' channel after the big digital switch over. They'll just be A.N.Other Digital Channel.

It amuses me that back when I was a kid we only had four channels and dozens of things to watch. These days we have 200+ channels and bugger all on!

Wow I thought all UK animation was non existent these days. I had never heard of the company but I did watch some of its shows that were mentioned as a child.
Have they created anything of note over the past decade or so? For that matter except for the Dennis the Menace cartoons on the cbbc channel, has there been much else animated shows created in the UK?

I don't actually watch broadcast TV anymore unless it's on when I'm at someone's house. I watch programmes online and also via downloads and DVD's. The only exception is when a new episode of Doctor Who is on, but even by mid new series season 4 I was sometimes catching it on iPlayer instead. -Ralph

These days I usually find myself only watching the music channels on digital. Reality TV shows, soaps and other tin-pot TV just bore me. I only watch the terrestrial TV channels for the Grand Prix motor racing and the annual Eurovision Song Contest (nether of which are regular fixtures of TV).

I've never seen these newer series o Wind in the Willows but noticed that there are a couple of live action versions available on DVD at the moment. Are one of these the one with Rik Mayall in?
