Which stories do you consider the best of the best? For me, sticking to the comics (i.e. excluding Masterforce) the very best would be: The Transformers / Power Play (Marvel US #1-2) Warrior School / Repeat Performance (Marvel US #7-8) Brainstorm / Prime Time (Marvel US #11-12) The Icarus Theory / Dinobot Hunt (Marvel UK #45-50) Edit: My second tier would include Plague of the Insecticons, Man of Iron, In the National Interest and the Headmasters mini-series. It must be a good few years since I read the comics so the stories aren't that fresh in my mind. My absolute best of the best of the top of my head would be:
The Icarus Theory/Dinobot Hunt Target: 2006

Man of Iron, The Smelting Pool, The Bridge to Nowhere, Distant Thunder and the first issue of G2 consistently remain the strongest stories in the run to my mind.

G2 Issue 7 Tales of Earth Part 1 Heck, my mind's gone completely blank as to which story this was! I know it's not the death of Bludgeon, which was #5. I shall have to dig it out! Martin

It's just the injured Prime doing the recap, but it's the first US issue of G2 I owned and the art blew me away. That issue alone sold me on Yaniger being awesome.

And I should say that was Tales of Earth Part Four!

Up to this point, I would have to say the following:
US Transformers 33-34 "Man of Iron"
An example of when story and art collide in the right way. I hope you gentleman don't take this the wrong way. While set in England, it feels English: the artwork, direction, and everything. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the US run, an exceptional piece.
US Transformers 7 "Warrior School"
Ratchet shows real desperation throwing in with the deposed Megatron. Strong characterization and storytelling makes this issue a winner.
US Transformers 8 "Repeat Performance"
Ratchet locates the Dinobots and faces off with Megatron. In the end, Ratchet the medic defeats the most powerful Decepticon, epic stuff. Budiansky's use of Marvel's Savage Land clicks where I felt Spider-Man was shoe-horned in.
UK Transformers 78-88 "Target 2006"
Best concept and seems to tidy up nicely. Leads into bigger and better things for Transformers UK.
UK Transformers 101-102 "Fallen Angel"
Epic battle between an insane Galvatron and just about everybody. Do the Dinobots ever win a battle?
UK Transformers 125 and Action Force 24-27 "Ancient Relics"
G.I. Jo ere...Action Force and the Autobots battle Megatron. Where US series leaves Megatron hanging, UK series plugs him back in with a vengeance. In regards to Action Force's individual characterizations, I'm still on the fence but after all it's not ARAH. "Ancient Relics" is a better crossover than almost every crossover between the two franchises, highly recommended.
UK Transformers 160-161 "Salvage"
Ultra Magnus finally overcomes his demon, Galvatron. I really liked the panel comparisons between Ultra Magnus and Megatron. Both are so different in their approach. You really see the differences between Autobots and Decepticons. Furman used this technique a few times before but here you really sense the internal struggles.

Do the Dinobots ever win a battle? Conclusively and fairly, without any help? Yes. They beat the Predacons in 'Grudge Match'. I doubt the Preds ever lived down the shame. To be fair to the Dinobots, they are perfectly capable of beating most TFs. They just always seem to pick fights with the few that they can't. Martin

If you don't want to come across as a bully you have to find someone meaner than you to take on. And when there is such a big step between tiers.... it is easy to trip on the step. For me the absolutely top tier story wise would have to be:- Man of Iron Warrior School/Repeat Performance Crisis of Command Icarus Theory/Dinobot Hunt G2#1 Karl

Union rules. Can't combine after 10pm or on weekends without incurring over-time, which would have to be approved by Decepticon High Command. Such approval could be difficult to receive timeously during periods of civil war and/or intense battles.

(Which I don't think was quite the best of, but had some good stuff in it) It's just that sort of thing hammers home how much better Furman is when writing in smaller doses. The limitations really bring out his best. Andy

I've only just come close to all 332 comics and Im still missing one or two annuals but I intend to reread the full run as close as possible so this list might change. I haven't read many issues for at least 10 years and most since their original printing. So this is very much from childhood memory.
Man of Iron The Earthforce stuff - well all those mostly stand alone black and white back up strips.
maybe they weren't the best but when I think of the Transformers comic its mostly those stories that I remember. I missed all the great UK stuff as I started reading at issue 200 and still havent read quite a few of them.

The G2 stories are the only ones of the Marvel run that I haven't read. I don't why I haven't read them because I brought the trades several years ago but never got around to doing anything more than flicking through them. I also downloaded the G.I Joe run-up issues a while ago and I've got them somewhere and haven't read them either. I must get round to it sometime.

You're missing out, G2 is easily one of the best TF runs out there.

You're missing out, G2 is easily one of the best TF runs out there. It's the only Marvel US stuff I don't like enough to buy in trades, but that's not because it fails to be what it tries to be, just that what it tries to be gives me no pleasure. Martin

I do intend to read them at some point but I want to read the G.I Joe run-in stories first and that means trying to find the CD that I saved the downlaoded versions onto. After I have read them though that will only leave the 'Ghosts' story as the one I have not read of the G2 saga.
