Some Easter Eggs are a bit annoying and it makes me wonder how they came into being in the first place and why they are called Easter Eggs. There are a few Easter Eggs on some of the Red Dwarf DVD's that make me wonder how the hell is anybody supposed to find them because in order to watch them you have to find this numbered keyboard somewhere in the clutter of the DVD menu and then type in a specific four-digit number just to watch something that probably isn't too good anyway.

Most Doctor Who DVD's have Easter Eggs, sometimes really good little features. So why not put them on the bloody menu so I: A: Know they exist, and: B: Can access them easily?
The most idiotic Easter Egg is a commentary track on The Five Doctors SE featuring David Tennant (who is, I believe, somewhat popular). You would think such a feature on a classic series DVD would be a selling point, wouldn't you? But it's not mentioned on the outer packaging, booklet, or DVD menu screens. I only know it existed because I saw a post about it on a forum! I did want to listen again to it once but could not remember how to find it. Also, folk who work on these DVD's have commented many times that the most expensive feature on their DVD's are the commentary tracks. So why not bloody mention one, eh?
I fecking hate easter eggs.

On a Beast Wars DVD I own, you can access the pilot episode by doing something with Rhinox's eyes. I did it by accident and was pleasantly surprised.

The Five Doctors one is an oddity but generally I believe the idea behind easter eggs (certainly with Who DVD's) is little short interesting things that people might be disappointed in if they were listed on the packaging as a extra.
OK. I suppose if someone sees a list of special features on the back and "extra x" turns out to be just a ten second clip of something, it could be seen as trying to make the extras package seem larger. But why not just leave it of the packaging but still keep it on the menu? Why this faffing about pressing directions or inputting numbers on your remote. I too sometimes want to check out an easter egg again but can't remember how to access it.
Extremely annoying.
edit: especially if the extra is really good and more than a brief thing. Those Red Dwarf ones with Rob/Doug/Ed are great.

The Red Dwarf one are really good especially those animatics with the creators, but even with instructions some I haven't been able to access yet.
I don't know if its on Red Dwarf but one easter egg I tried watching invoved watching the entire disc, choosing play all and with out skipping going to a point about 2 hours in then at a specific point about 2 seconds in duration pushing something then pushing something else also at a specific point. I failed and figured nothing could be that worth while. It would be quicker to rip the disc and then one by one copy all the special features in to WMA till I found it.
On a related topic what I really hate is Disney DVD failing to say if the film has a dvd comentary on the disc. They never tell you, so to find out I spend ages serching forums, but even then its not clear cut because a person could be talking about any number of different releases. A region 1 and 2 disc might look identical with the same info on the back but the US one will have a commentary and the UK one wont.
For Lilo and Stich a commentary was recorded (its really good) but Disney decided not to included it on the first release except in one country it might have been Australia, but I have a feeling it was more oddly a non English speaking (at least as a first language) country like Germany. A few years later when Disney reintroduced the platinum editions discs the film was rereleased and included the commentary, but in the states it was mentioned on the back, here it wasn't In fact the list of extras was almost identical to the original release despite the platinum being 2 discs to the original one. Until someone bought it and wrote online what they found there was no way to find out. Even online retailers didnt know as each listed different information.
The absolute worst experience was trying to find a version of A Muppet Christmas Carol (only 6 weeks till I watch it) on DVD that included the love song drove me near mad last year. Theres been about 3 or 4 different releases and most had at least different covers in different countries if not different extras. Amongst them all only once has the version released on VHS been included. Every other is the original cinema release which is minus the song. Even the version that does include it is a remaster of the cinema release with the cropped video release included as an extra. An extra with little effort ot clean it up made. I still watch it over the widescreen version but it does look awful in comparison.

Five doctors: put the disc in, press play and then press the audio button on your remote and cycle through the audio tracks till you find it.

Haha the Beast Wars one was the only one I found too!
I like easter eggs actually. It is really easy to actually find them on disks, you just look them up on a website, and it is a nice extra. It is like something free with your dvd, and secret too, so you feel like you are in a cool club for knowing where it is.

... and why they are called Easter Eggs. As in, Easter Egg hunt. The absolute worst experience was trying to find a version of A Muppet Christmas Carol (only 6 weeks till I watch it) on DVD that included the love song drove me near mad last year. You mean, "The Love Is Gone"? That's possibly my favourite bit of the film. (I know, old romantic, me.) I'm glad I've never felt the need to replace my VHS with DVD.

I spent two Decembers living in London without a video, desperation drove me to it. Plus I'm still more than happy to watch the video, but all but one of our old video players likes to eat the tapes now. Suprisingly the one that still works fine is the first one we got and is almost as old as me.
And the film utterly doesn't work without the song, Scrooges revalation just doesn't play without it.
When will Disney learn.

This thread started with Ralph ranting about Easter eggs. Don't get him started on Disney as well.

Easter Eggs bug me. The content is paid for and it's not like the people involved do them for nowt so the cost of them is allocated to the DVD so I pay for it and therefore resent having to fucking hunt for them.

I am very much of the opinion that any content that is on a DVD should be easy to find, and I shouldn't have to fiddle about doing unlikely things to locate it. You sold the content to me, I have paid for it, let me get access to it without having to fiddle around.
I actually have one DVD boxed set (Madman are the offending company) where all of the extra material is hidden in this way, on every disc. It is fairly easy to find, and are at least acknowledged on the packaging but that isn't the point. Just label it properly on the menu please. Especially when it is thing like a subtitled commentary on the last two episodes by the director!
As to the ones that they don't even admit on the packaging are present - if you feel the need to hide a feature, then surely it is a mark of embarressment and you should think about whether you want to put it on the DVD at all?
