Is anyone doing anything for hallowe'en this weekend?
We're having a barbeque of all things. If the rain stays off, that is.
I won't be opening the door to trick or treaters. I was always told never to give sweets to strange children.

When Halloween comes we stay out of the front room of our house to give the impression that nobody is home when trick or treaters turn up. If these people know we are in and we don't open the door to them they tend to pelt the door with flour and eggs.

Oh I'm looking forward to Hallowe'en, all those lovely young kids, all in their expensive costumes, all carrying bags full of sweets and treats, and then I'll be a jerk and throw cold water from the second floor of my house over their heads

I will be moving things from one room of the house to the other and stripping some wallpaper.
Will give myself some time to watch a couple of horror flicks though. Original flavour Halloween and possibly The Fearmaker as well!

I plan to be out of the house watching a movie in order to avoid trick or treaters. I'm in a child heavy neighborhood and I don't have the patience for being up and down every two minutes to answer the door.

I'm going to stay in and hand out Candy Canes and Cadbury's Heros alongside promotional stuff for TGI Friday Kids Club.
Last year was quite pleasant, most of the kids who called my door were youth I already know and some accompanied by parents. I don't endorse playing with darkness or Halloween in general, but I humour it to those who call round instead of presenting myself as a fun spoilering bible basher.

I went hunting for Vincent Price DVD's to watch for Halloween today, but could find none. Thus, youtube shall fulfil my needs, though not sadly 'The Raven'.

Halloween is not really of any particular significance to me. I have a Kurosawa film that I am planning to watch, or possibly a Doctor Who serial.
If that doesn't fill up the remainder of my evening I shall probably fire up the 360 and play some Batman:Arkham Asylum - and be a thing that goes bump in the night.
I don't open the door to trick-or-treaters meself - around here it is little more than an excuse to demand money from folk, and some of the kids don't need an excuse to do that.
Besides, it is all an invented foreign that has displaced proper Scottish guising anyway, so I don't really see the point.

Halloween is just another day for me. Like Christmas I don't enjoy it as much now as what I did when I was a kid. I don't open the door to trick or treaters and I don't watch horror movies. I just let the day roll on just like any other.

I have one lone little chocolate bar standing by just in case. I only ignore the doorbell on Halloween if I've forgotten to get anything in - answering is a bit pointless in that situation. But I've only just got home, so if there have been any callers this evening I may have missed them. It's a change-is-as-good-as-a-rest sort-of working weekend for Martin this week. Because I'm learning Welsh at work, I get e-mails every week about all the events for Welsh learners happening around Cardiff. A year and half after starting, and I've never followed up on any of them, but this week the top of the list was a Saturday day-course full of activities and lessons in Cardiff Castle, ending with going to the Sparks in the Park fireworks display in Bute Park. Lessons, castle entry, lunch and fireworks all for £20. I thought what the heck. And it's been a great day. Made some new friends, learnt/practised some Welsh, had the full castle tour (in Welsh), had a drink in the pub (conversation in Welsh - and I managed to just about keep up), followed by the biggest fireworks display in Wales. I haven't been to one since I moved here in 2002, and I'm not really one for loud noises, but it was very impressive and pretty, and a refreshing change from computer-generated special effects. Tomorrow I've agreed to go as a volunteer with the RSPB to some place out of town where there are supposed to be rutting stags, er... rutting. However, unlike today, tomorrow's weather forecast is not good so it may be a washout. Martin

Last year I brought home my lab coat and goggles so I could answer the door as 'a scientist' and ask the kids to come back and report if they grew any extra limbs or started floating after eating the sweets and fruit I handed out. About an hour ago a group of kids came to the door who had obviously been by last year. One of the girls asked:
"Did you dress up as a nerd last year?"
The more I think about what she said the more it concerns me. Not because she said I was a nerd (I politely informed them that I am a nerd all the time) but that she thinks everyone who wears a white coat is a nerd. How sad.

However, unlike today, tomorrow's weather forecast is not good so it may be a washout. 'Twasn't a washout. 'Twas windy, but dry for most of the day. Had a nice walk. Saw many fallow deer, red deer and Pere David deer. And a buzzard. And some ravens. And saw owl poo being dissected to identify the bones of the animals the owls had been eating. Martin

We had a nice BBQ in the end, and even the weather stayed mild and dry for it! It was nice to have the family round. Though I did burn my lips on a toasted marshmallow!
There was one group of kids at the door, but they were cruelly ignored. I mean, begging the neighbours for food and dressing up to scare us into submission. Really!

Via the magic of youtube I watched 3 Vincent Price films:
-The Haunted Palace. Great old Roger Corman movie. Falls apart in the last 5 minutes but still great fun.
-House of Wax. Time hasn't been kind, but still watchable.
-The Abominable Dr Phibes. Hadn't seen this one before. Mind-bogglingly barmy.

I didn't do too much other than watch a bit of TV as the odd firework was let off outside by people who will use any excuse to set off fireworks.

For the second year in a row we bought sweets and no-one came round. It was with a heavy heart and a tear in my eye, that I crammed down Haribos, milky-bars and fudges, whilst watching Match of the Day so that they wouldn't go to waste.

It appears that some idiots near me had a few fireworks left over from Halloween so they set them off in daylight .... again!

It appears that some idiots near me had a few fireworks left over from Halloween so they set them off in daylight .... again! That happens a lot around me. There tend to be fireworks off and on from Halloween around to sometime in January - often being let off before it gets dark, because folk seem more interested in the fact that they go bang and explode than in being able to see them. The same happens round here too. The shops start selling fireworks in the middle of October and they don't go off sale until the beginning of January giving anybody with a stupid amount of spare cash to buy them throughout the rest of the year and set them off at any hour that pleases them on any given day.
