The talk of Transformers being robotic and alien in the first 12 issues of Marvel US and in Man of Iron reminded me of the Megatron appearances in GI Joe just before Generation 2. Now having reread them, there's no robots in disguise elements to them, Megatron literally turns up at the Cobra castle/base and starts attacking it, but it does do a pretty good job of conveying the sense of scale and danger a 30 foot tall robot suddenly dropping in on your doorstop would entail.
Dialogue wise though, Hama writes Megatron in a wholly unique way. From GI Joe issue 139 in amongst some class Megatron superior, humans inferior put downs like:
"You soft protoplasm creatures have elevated hubris to previously unheard of heights!"
"How can I examine this new marvel with this disgusting carbon-cycle creature cluttering it up--?"
he also provides regular, out loud, status updates:
"I present too big a target in this mode! I need to be reconfigured for optimum efficiency! Anthropomorphic dexterity and mobility are also unessential for present tasks, which are best accomplished by a dedicated weapons system!"
"My structural integrity has been compromised! That was a direct hit from a hyper-velocity projectile, according to my sensors, that projectile is still travelling, with its speed degraded by passage through my body, it still exceeded gravitational escape velocity! This is indicative of a weapon system beyond any known earth technology!"
and he addresses his robotic abilities as if they were voice activated:
"Reconfigure!"
"Damage control program activated!"
"All sensor arrays, full analysis mode!"
I think this is some of the best robots amongst us type writing in Transformers history. What do others think? Could regular Transformer stories work with characters always speaking like this?
