The current stats direct from my work is that applicants yield 1 interview for every 11 applications made in the current jobs market. It's about firing in as many as possible, really. Folk tend to get so good at the apps that several interviews turn up at once.
Also, over 60% of vacancies are currently unadvertised so do not discount speculative applications.

That doesn't entirely surprise me to be honest. Given the number of applicants we had for the last post available where I currently work and the small fraction of those that we interviewed it would fit my experiences. I never really expected to get many interviews out of the early batches of applications, I have kind of resigned myself to the fact that this is very much a numbers game in some respects.
I haven't done much in the way of spec applications yet, but I thing I must start laying the groundwork for that as it may be a fruitful endeavour.

Ralph, let me know if you want me to call you on your mobile to tell you there's a tarantula in your bathroom and you'd better come immediately or something. Always a good excuse.
And as soon as I get your keys, perhaps reality.
Have fun tomorrow chap - sure it'll be fine!

Retroactive channeling engaged Ralph.
Been so busy on the new shift at work, that I've been quite frazzled at the end of it. Don't finish till 11pm and in the mornings I have been doing my best to relax and stay away from the computer and read, watch dvds/tv and just chill.
Still first official Saturday of not having to work in some years coming up, although I need to pop in and do a couple of bits n bobs as part of the handover of my old team!

I have found, "Ah, my whore's arrived, but I'm not paying until she starts touching me," to be a tried and trusted get-out-of-awkward-situation excuse.

I didn't realise Jack Daniels was 40% alcohol-by-volume until I saw it on TV yesterday.

Back nice and early, though I think refusing alcohol and moaning about how nervous I get on work night outs and why I don't usually go along with leaving very early probably didn't do me any favours. Balls. Don't think I made a good impression. Damn it.

Don't fret too much about the dinner thing Ralph. I reckon as your a newbie they'll write off any nerves as that. It's only been a week.
My work Christmas party consists of me, myself and I eating take out in the lab. *sigh*
Another vital piece of equipment shat itself at work today too - the motorized drive stage on the main microscope. Can't do any of my work without it as it can't be used manually. Boss #2 is sending down a replacement he stole off Boss #1's scope, should arrive tomorrow. The downside is that tomorrow is Saturday and I will likely be spending most of the day waiting for mail and then doing Friday's work.
And it will be 0 degrees celcius tomorrow. Is currently -4.

Eating in the lab?? No wonder your equipment is breaking down! You're unravelling the most basic laws of the universe!!

My work do is in a few weeks, with my old team from my old shift, looks like I won't be able to snag the night out with my new team, although they seem like a good bunch so far.

They'll chalk the experience up to nerves Ralph. New jobs can be daunting and most folk inbetween jobs tend to be a bit jittery and also without a lot of disposable income to begin with. Easiest way to rectify that is when you are a bit more flush instigate an after work drink session with them and it'll all be gravy.

Two notable milestones today:
I finished my collection of Rampage Monthly
I concluded my Micromaster SixTeams reviews - SixBuilder's up in the review section.
I feel I have achieved things. Happy.

Had an aimless walk about earlier, yay. Really in the mood for some old school Star Trek, alas my DVD's are boxed up somewhere in my parents' garage, but *cough* the interweb has come to my aid. Picked up some of that nice Sainsburys Irish Cream as a treat. Soon be time to put some Aunt Bessie roast potatoes in the oven. I am totally addicted to them. Will watch some old Batman serials I got from the Turnbull first, I think. Incidentally, I keep getting mail for a 'Turnbull' who does not live here!

Sainsbury's Irish cream and Aunt Bessie's roast spuds are all a man needs to live like a king.
Spent the morning planting trees in my local nature reserve with its 'Friends' group, some of whom are ex-pupils of the school that used to be where my house now is, and who helped the Council turn the adjacent landfill site into a nature reserve. They're all very nice people.

Today was spent partly dodging through the rain to get the Christmas presents for my family organised. (Had to pick up the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes DVD set that I have got for my sister from the post office - which entailed standing outside the depot in the queue for the parcels counter for a while). Then this afternoon I have been tinkering around with getting an up-to-date CV together. Of course, this afternoon the rain decided to stop, until just minutes after I had stopped working.......
Ah well. I have had a nice dinner and got a few things sorted out this evening so all told it was a productive day after all.

Well, thanks to Andy's dodgy DVDs, my curiosity, in as much as I had any, has been more than satisfied as to Japanese Spider-Man, black & white Batman, and 'The Freakmaker'. Oh dear dearie me. Enjoyed the Rock Lords movie though. (Everything's relative.) Martin

Glad you enjoyed the Rock Lords. It's a fun film with a nice line in punnery.
The Freakmaker isn't a film it's an experience and an awesome one to boot!

So, we need more films where rabbits get fed to trees?
|
|
|
Post by Andy Turnbull on Dec 6, 2009 23:42:16 GMT
Only if fed to the tree by actors of a certain calibre - Donald Pleasance does it in the Freakmaker (but only due to scheduling issues, his part was written for Vincent Price, but had another gig so had to pass) I think it would have to be David Warner, Jeffrey Coombs or Bruce Campbell that should do it.
