As the parentals have a TV set, I have been exposed to more TV than usual. Frankly, what I have seen so far has not given me the urge to buy a TV myself! So far I have watched:
-Victoria Wood special: dreadful, self-indulgant pap. It only had 2 gags, both of which were run into the ground in the first 5 mins. Sadly, the show was 60 mins long.
-QI Chrimbo Special: Pretty good, the gag about the lost Osmond brother had me in stitches.
-Live at the Apollo: Not funny, trying too hard.
-The Gruffalo: takes a charming children's picture book, smothers it in self-importance, bakes with a CG style that just does not work for that type of story at all, garnishes with stunt voice casting which kills any life stone dead and serves on a dish of banality. It will win awards.
-Doctor Who: better than the last 4 specials, but really proves the show works best as a weekly series. Pretty dull and up its own ass. Only Bernard Cribbons and the Daltanator held my interest. Part 2 looks more fun though.
Coming up soon: Poirot. Don't let me down!

I've avoided all of Victoria Woods shows for about the past twenty or so years because I don't find her remotely funny but one programme I wanted to watch today was the last episode of James May's Toy Stories. I missed it but that isn't too big a problem as its repeated on Sunday and it will also be on the iPlayer.

Just Spooks on Tuesday, QI on Wednesday, Doctor Who yesterday and hopefully March of the Penguins this afternoon, as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and Dad recorded Poirot so we may see that today also.
I evacuated the living room while my sister and her boyfriend watched Strictly Come Dancing and Eastenders. I dunno, they seemed like such rational beings with good taste up until that point in the proceedings.

Eastenders. Oh dear... Despite having Sky channels on top of Sky Channels, we ignored Christmas TV all except for Doctor Who which is now becoming as much an annual tradition to watchthese days. I'm gutted to find out on this thread that George and I missed a new Poirot though. Will probably junk out on cartoons etc later today. ===KEN

Years ago Christmas TV was unmissable in our house - these days it is largely unwatchable. I've got no problems with the programmes listed earlier on in this thread that some of you are eager to watch or have watched but none of them remotely interests me or my family. These days we generally tend to put on a DVD or leave the TV off.

I very much enjoyed Poirot.
And that's me done with TV once again!
EDIT! Wait! The RSC recording of Hamlet is on BBC2 this afternoon. I shall catch it on iPlayer. That's this evening sorted out then.

I wish I had as much interest in modern day TV shows as you lot did. I usually spend my spare time on my computer or reading a book ... or drinking a few cans of beer while watching a DVD!

There wasn't anything at all on yesterday that I had any interest in watching. I only had the tv on to play the wii and watch dvds.
You know Christmas tv is bad when I chose to watch Headmasters instead.

I managed to watch the James May's Toy Stories episode on iplayer yesterday and it was just as good as I had hoped it would be. He tried to make a few toy trains travel ten miles across an old railway route that had long been taken up. It was clearly his most ambitious project yet in the series and it was no surprise that it failed.

You must have watched your lifetime's quota of TV in the '80s, judging by a certain other thread on this forum. We're still playing catch-up! Martin

I think I did! Nothing seems to interest me much on TV these days. The only programes I'm watching at the moment are Top Gear, any programme hosted by a Top Gear presenter and this programme thats currently running at nighttimes on Challenge TV about gameshows from the past fifty years (which isn't hosted by a Top Gear presenter!)

Day of the Triffids part 1 was enjoyable tosh. Plus, Joely Richardson is lovely.

Day of the Triffids part 1 was enjoyable tosh. I enjoyed it and will be watching Part 2. However, I would like there to be more focus on the perils of the Triffids and the worldwide blindness, and less on the dastardliness of Eddie Izzard. Martin

Quite enjoyed the Poroit - a decent cast and well put together. Quite enjoyable for Christie-derived stuff.
Doctor Who received an average rating of "terrible" in my house. I went to get a second glass of sherry halfway through to numb my brain cells. I am quite embarrased that it was the first experience my mothers future husband had of either old or New Who.
Saw The Gruffalo. I wish it had been cel-animated, I really do. It would have had more character and would probably have better hidden the rough edges when it ran up against the budgetary limitations.
Other than that the only things we saw down at my mums were two of the Wallace and Gromit's that were on.

What is that?

It's a term coined by Warren Ellis and denotes the failure of imaginative writing when everything is boiled down to being 'all about family' so it is 'relatable'.

I found myself flipping channels throughout Triffids Part 2. Admittedly, this was only partly due to boredom and partly due to me suddenly having a gazillion channels in my bedroom instead of just five.
I thought the forming of a new family unit was necessary in order to make the characters believable and human. I'd have no interest in a story about the survivors of the end of civilisation if they didn't come across to me as real people with feelings. The boredom for me came mainly from the unbelievability of the bad guys. And the one who went implausibly quickly from bad to good (from about to shoot children on the orders of Eddie Izzard to risking his life to save the good/normal guys) had me tutting into my duvet.
I think the whole thing would have been much better without any human villains, and with the heroes being a bit less perfect. Such characters introduce a two-dimensionality as far as I'm concerned that is a waste of a good set-up. However, heroes and villains are easier to write than non-cliched fully rounded people.

Last night I watched the original version of The Wicker Man. I'd never seen it before but my father had and it was him who was watching it. It was a most enjoyable film and both Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee played their roles excellently. The ending didn't go the way I had expected it to but that was all part of the joy of the film.
