It's a very enjoyable series.
I will be interested to see your reaction at various events.

That said, I wasn't that keen on "Mockinjay", "Divergent" or what I saw of "Alliegant". They all shared a similar sense of a principle character who mostly has things done _to_ them and is more pulled along by the story than active in it. In "Mockinjay"'s defence this is actually intentional, and the lead characters lack of agency is a story point. Unfortunately I didn't think it worked out very well from a screen point of view. In things like the "Divergent" series and the "Maze Runner" adaptations it felt more like something that was being done just because it was a part of the "vacum-packed stock Young-Adult Genre" pigeonhole. Mind you, I'd say that the Divergent series is probably less painfully silly than the "Maze Runner" series, even if the first one didn't really have the bite of "The Hunger Games". My misfortune is that the film I have enjoyed most in this genre, 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones', didn't do well enough at the box office to become the series it was intended to be. (I understand that like Stargate is has spawned a TV series instead.) That said, I haven't seen any of the Divergent series. That will change, as film number one is on the telly tonight. Martin

Last night's film was Eddie the Eagle.
Brilliantly pitched feel good film. If you haven't seen it, I really recommend it.

I haven't watched it. I don't think I've watched a single TV programme this year.

I just can't be bothered. I'm so out of the habit of watching TV I keep forgetting Iplayer exists. I doubt I'll watch any telly until this year's Doctor Who episode airs.

The new series of the Apprentice is on, it's good for a laugh. This year's contestants are astonishingly terrible.

Yonderland is back on sky one. That's brilliant fun. Did anyone watch the new fantasy comedy on Dave after Red Dwarf?

The new series of the Apprentice is on, it's good for a laugh. This year's contestants are astonishingly terrible. The girls are a lot less screechy this year after it all got a bit out of control last year, but overall I think it is a very poor selection of candidates this year.

I've just watched the first episode of this. I can't help but feel it's run its course. 12 series of the same thing with progressively less intelligent and more car crash tv styled contestants... it needs a revised format.

They've stopped pretending they have "the country's best business minds" and instead "the biggest collection of wierdos and losers!

That said, I haven't seen any of the Divergent series. That will change, as film number one is on the telly tonight. Nope, it didn't take. I kept losing interest and switching over to a HIGNFY repeat on Dave, and then about two thirds of the way through I fell asleep. Martin

(I understand that like Stargate is has spawned a TV series instead.) Still to see that. I must remember to put it in the rental queue for whenever I get finished with all this Daredevil that Amazon have sent me (normally they tend to send two of a series at a time, this is the first time for several years that I have had all of a series sent successively. It would be the one that I am in no hurry to rush through that they send like that...) Karl

Finally watched Attack on Titan. Absolutely barking mad but at least they stick with the concept. And some great intro music.
Though it does basically just turn into a mecha show. Because Japan.

I am watching Gurren Lagann as everyone has been telling me to forever. It's okay, but I am told it gets better later on. Currently it seems to be your average mecha show but with more drills

I tend to feel that the thing of note about TTGL is a matter of tone and spirit. Whilst a lot of the classic Super Robot genre tropes had been fairly effectively deconstructed, and in a very public way, by Neon Genesis Evangelion - to the extent that there was a prevailing sense that the genre _should_ be of that kind of very grim, hopeless tone where every good thing you tried to do ended up bad because of how terrible the world was etc. Then Gurren Lagann comes along and shouts "No! Awesomeness is great! Adolescents falling into giant robots is fun! Fighting spirit will save the day! Unleash your inner awesomeness and make the world better!" With a side-order of "Stupid jokes are funny! Bright colours are great!", basically embracing its inner absurdity and running with it. It was in many ways a strongly reconstructive show which did a lot to reclaim the tropes that Evangelion had deconstructed and very loudly celebrate them again. (And if you'll stay with it, the boisterousness, and scale, steadily creeps up the dial towards Eleven and beyond, which is its own kind of amusing for me)
(Personally I actually have a greater soft spot for "Eureka Seven" - the TV Series version - which walks a finer line between a somewhat mature " 'I love you' can be had work sometimes but it is worth it " and a hopelessly romantic "But sometimes 'I love you' is what it takes to save the world", whilst still embracing its inner absurdity. That said, I find TTGL like an enthusiastic puppy - energetic, endearing and kinda adorable at times).
I'll take either of them over the platitudes of Gundam SEED or the obnoxiously blatant product- placement which is Gundam Build Fighters. :-)

Speaking of Kingston, did you see Railways - Making of a Nation last week Phil? Big section on how Surbiton was built as Kingston's station but evolved into its own suburb. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07x4f7s

No I didn't, must watch that, ta.
Though I know the story of Surbiton (home of TV's The Good Life) station very well and have used it many a time and even been through it on a diverted HST!

I loved the idea that this offshoot from Kingston, cast out of the centre itself, started out called 'Kingston Upon Railway'. It's been an interesting series, half hour episodes, but I think the early ones are only on iPlayer for the next few days.
