In honour of the birthday of Peter Cushing Ralph and I watched Island of Terror starring him.
He was great. The film was not.

Tried the new BBC drama 'Blackout' as it has the 9th Doctor Who in it. Very stylishly shot, but after half an hour of tepid writing I switched it off. Decompressed to fook.

Not too bad a fan film.
He was a good Punisher, in a very bad film.

Phil's got The Eric Sykes collection on DVD. He's been trying to watch The Plank and The Coffin but keeps getting interupted...... it doesn't help that I keep location spotting during them as well!

Jon Richardson: a little bit OCD, because I can identify with it. With the irrational need for order by the presenter, that is, thankfully not the _actual_ cases of OCD that we see in the course of the programme, where it brings unhappiness and poor health. Martin

The old R.K.O. Pictures films of The Saint (starring George Sanders among others) are on BBC2 this week, so hit the iPlayer for some old school charm.

Today I sat down and watched Coriolanus, Ralph Fiennes cinematic adaptation of the Shakespeare play of the same name. It was a very impressive production of one of the the plays that I must confess to now knowing at all. Doing it in modern dress and adopting the trappings of the various Balkan Wars actually suited well a story of a General cast out of Rome throwing in with his enemies in pursuit of revenge. I can see why it is considered one of the "difficult" Shakespearean texts though. There are few likeable characters for the audience to engage with. The Pro-consuls of Rome are cynical manipulators of public opinion, whilst Coriolanus has an unbending arrogance which leads to him bringing his exile on himself through his inability to mask his disdain for the common citizens of Rome. Fairly unremitting in its grimness, but - certainly in this form - a very absorbing text.
I have also seen "Twilight" this weekend - as instructed by one of this parish - and can now claim an informed opinion on it. It is extremely dull, flatly lit and directed like a TV Movie of the Week but I think I can see why it was hugely successful amongst its target demographic. Me I am just left with an overwhelming sense of boredom.

Might give the new series 'Person of Interest' starting at 10pm on Channel 5 tonight a try. "A down-on-his-luck former CIA agent is given another chance by a reclusive billionnaire who wants him to help stop crimes before the occur." Yeah, why not.

There is an ad paying in the cinema for it which implies it's a feature film and er, didn't mention TV at all. In other news, I have been trying to watch the fourth Quatermass serial. Ye Gods, it's hard going. -Ralph

It has been moderately successful in the States as far as I have heard, and I have heard decent things about it. I will probably give it a go and see what I think.
Other than that my only broadcast television has, like Andy, been Castle - a witty cop show is very much my speed at the moment , and Castle has the advantage of giving Nathan Fillon room to stretch his Leading Man legs (and of course, the show also has Stana Katic which counts in anythings favour with me).

Well, that was all right. I was amused at the sheer number of people he shot in the leg in a single episode, and what the hospital would make of it when they all came limping in.

Martin I'm a bit on the fence about it to be honest. The central premise is a decent tosh idea, but it seemed to be taking itself terribly seriously - not helped by the fact that there wasn't really a lot of emotion out of either of our nominal leads. I will probably give it another episode or so to see how it settles in. The shooting-to-disable thing was kind of accidentally hilarious though. I get that they didn't want to give the character a huge body-count but when you keep doing it so frequently in an hour show it does start to look slightly daft. Even more so when you think that hospitals are required to report gunshot injuries to the police in most areas. The paperwork he has single-handedly generated in one episode is going to be a real bug-bear for an officer or two. Karl

Watched a second episode of Person of Interest.... I think the problem I have with the show is that I don't find the protagonists to be of any... well, Interest. With a show which is victim/villian of the week I generally find I have to have some degree of interest in the leads because they are all that links one episode to the next, so they really have to convince me that I want to keep coming back, something that Human Target - for all that it got wrong - Burn Notice et al clearly understood. Neither of the lead characters of this show are actually giving me anything at all to work with on that front. There is a good tosh premise here, but I'm really not feeling invested enough in the show to stick with it any further I don't think.

Watched A Study In Terror last night. A Sherlock Holmes encountering Jack The Ripper film with with John (Baron Munchausen) Neville as Sherlock.
Not great, a shame as Neville could have been a very good Sherlock.
