Lovely Sunday without switching my broadband router on or using the Internet in any way. Read the Observer, two thirds of the new Jack Reacher novel, a hundred pages of a D&D monsters and creatures guidenook, and twenty pages of Robert E. Howard stories.

Currently enjoying Patrick Stewart's autobiography 'Making It So' that Mrs M got me for Christmas.
I don't read a lot of biographies or autobiographies but I do like these ones like this that delve into history, politics, culture etc and how it changes over time with lots of little interesting asides alongside the actual (separately interesting) story of the person's life.
Getting the same vibe for all that from this one as I did from Tony Robinson's a few years ago. Great stuff.

I've also made a start on it, but only 5 pages in so far. Two other books on the go.

About page 50 here. Squeaking a few pages in here and there when everyone else here is in bed and asleep.

Flew through Patrick Stewart's book. It's surprisingly well written! I say 'surprisingly' as good actors do not always make good writers. I didn't sense a ghost writer.
I hope he writes more!

'Making it So' finished.
I'm glad I'm not a dog. Or one of his wives. Or kids.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Female chemist in 1950's/60's America ends up on daytime telly presenting a cooking show.
Wonderful novel: some of the smoothest prose I have read in quite some time. Flits expertly between laugh-out-loud funny and 'bloody hell' without the tone jarring. Makes very astute and clever points about disparities between genders without banging them over the reader's head. The plotting is really good too.
There is also an excellent character who just happens to be a dog.

Last night's chat on Essentials had me looking and today thanks to ebay - Essential X-Men 1-11 will be winging their way to Turnbull Towers, I have a couple of doublers, so will check and if mine are in better condition, flip them on ebay to recoup some costs.

I had a very extensive collection of Marvel Essentials and lost them all in a Garage Incident. I keep meaning to reacquire certain ones but some are silly money!

That was a mistake.
OK yes all the remaining ones are stacked behind colour trades now but needs must

Vast swathes of mine were lost in the steam stripper incident, so nice to get the full Claremont run of Uncanny as well as the first few of Adjectiveless.
Essential Warlock survives on the shelf though, thankfully.

Over the last three days I've read the final 50 or so pages of The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly, the first chapter of Making It So by Patrick Stewart, a hardback volume of The Art of War by Sun Tzu acquired from Swindon Waterstone's, and the first three issues in Phil's latest Dr Strange Epic Collection.

My copy arrived this week. I'd spotted the 2001 pod with R2 domes back in the day but looking at it now there are lot more places in the book where the artists have "taken inspiration" from popular TV and film science fiction. The cover for a start.... I've even spotted the direct use of a 2001 photo in one place which I'm looking at and wondering if it was the same in the original book Picked up a copy at a museum tat shop! Had to be done. -Ralph

Still haven't got a copy of this. I did see one recently in a museum gift shop, but buying it slipped my mind. I think I was distracted by the discovery that Jellycat do Dragons that are available in a surprisingly Lockheed-esque colour...

Dragons with military aircraft paint schemes? That's quite clever! No, sorry. Didn't make that clear. Not Lockheed the aviation company, Lockheed the alien. You know, Kate Pryde's longest running boyfriend, roaster of Brood, founder Excaliber member... that Lockheed. Karl

I picked up the first issue of Titan's Savage Sword of Conan for old time's sake as they're trying to recapture the style of the original. It's magazine sized, black and white newsprint, 84 pages. Certainly feels like the original and the main 48 page Conan story is excellent. It has an 18 page Soloman Kane backup and a few text articles. I think I'm going to set up a sub for this. The only sad thing is seeing Titan's UK office address in the publisher blurb and knowing it's not a magazine that'll be in newsagents here.
