I applied to a university in Saudi Arabia last night, and this morning I have discovered that I have completely cocked up the application form. I didn't include a scan of my university transcript and I gave the wrong scale for my grade point average (I always thought it was out of 20, but it's actually a 16 point scale giving me much better exam results than I realised). I can't retrieve the form now that it's submitted to correct it, the help desk haven't replied to my email and today is the deadline.
I don't know what to do.

Unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do from the sounds of it. :-(
Might be the case though that as you emailed them before the deadline was up to let them know they might allow you to change your form as it was a genuine mistake?

I'm so proud. Piglet, my daughter, has written her first song! At bed time tonight, in a desperate attempt to not get her jim-jams on, she ran about her room singing "Pants and Knickers go on ya bot! Pants and knickers go on ya bot! Pants and knickers go on ya bot! And vests!". Yes, she may have gotten alittle confussed at to where vests go, but as a first attempt me and the Mrs are very pleased!

The dole office has really gone downhill since I was last a regular signee there many years ago. Back then they used to pay us by giro and it used to come on the Friday after signing on. These days the money is paid into the bank and by Saturday it still hasn't made an appearance. This has happened quite regularly since I started to sign on about three months ago and I think I'll have to speak to them about.

At some point next week I've got to get myself a new mouse for my computer. My current one is only about a year old but already it is struggling to move the cursor around the screen on occasion. This problem only happened after I put some Duracel batteries in the mouse to replace the old ones and I suspect they have done something to it (yer, I know it sounds a little far fetched). The mouse is one of those new-fangled light-scribe mouses that uses some kind of laser light instead of a rollerball to find its way around a mousemat and that seems to have gone bandit.

Today I've been having a bit of fun as a vigilante on a Facebook page that tries to scam people into buying an ebook that doesn't do what it claims to do. The book in question is one called Farmville Secrets and promises to give you tips on how to play the game so successfully that you'll be a master of the game in no time. You will be able to level up faster, make more in game cash that what you currently do and so on and so on. The ebook isn't free however and the fan page is trying to sell it for about £20. I used a torrent site to download the book for free and discovered that it tells me nothing that I don't already know. Everything in the ebook is stuff you can pick up for free on the forum for the game or you find out for yourself (because they are so obvious to work out).
Anyway, onto the explanation for me being a bit of a vigilante on this fan page. People keep on posting comments on the page wondering if this is a scam or not so, this morning I posted a comment telling people the truth about the book. Within minutes however the admins of the group deleted my post and so, a few hours later I posted another comment which the admins deleted again. A few minutes ago I posted a third comment and lo and behold that has been deleted also. It seems that the admins of that group don't want anybody to know the truth and are desperate to scam as many people as possible.

The Facebook page that I have mentioned above is now no longer advertising the ebook but rather they are now running a link to an external website to get people to participate in surveys. Apparently, this survey firm will pay you just for taking a survey but it looks very dubious indeed because in order to check for availability in your area they need to know your name and email address! Since when has a simple check for area availability needed you to submit your email address?

It has been a couple of very enjoyable days to round out the week - two days spent at a friend's house for some banter and whatnot. But there have been a couple of niggling incidents that have annoyed me a little bit. On Friday I was sitting around trying to work out where a series of three sharp cracking sounds had been coming from. It was only after a moment that I noticed that my living room curtains were leaning down a bit more than they should have been. Examination showed that three of the supports for the curtain track, which have been there since the house was built in the mid-eighties, had finally succumbed to age and shattered. I have also noticed that a couple of the supports for the bedroom curtain track have gone as well. I think I'm going to have to get a couple of new curtain tracks in the next week or so before the rest of them go....
Then this afternoon, on the way back from spending the weekends at a friends I had an interesting run in with a near frictionless surface. Most of the ice and snow have melted here but there are a few areas where it still lingers. Unfortunately what remains has been heavily compressed and frozen, leaving it extremely slippery, especially as some surface melting has left thin film of water over it. I put a foot on some ice on a slope near the railway station and almost immediately went sprawling. I then started to slide and tumble down the hill. I went a fair way down and don't think that I would have stopped before flew out onto the road at the bottom of the hill if I hadn't stopped myself.
Fortunately the ice, whilst slick is quite brittle in places so I was able to slam my hand through a weak bit in the ice and scrabble to a stop. Backtracking across the hill in search of a place where I could actually walk properly was a bit of a careful process. I'm little bit bruised as a result of the fall and subsequent somewhat precipitous descent but fortunately there is no really significant damage except to my pride, and a pair of trousers that have very much needed to go into the wash after the soaking that they received during the slide.

Glad nothing worse happened! I had the 'luck' to find the one patch of ice left in my area - tucked away hidden in the evil shadow of a wheely bin. It was certainly a fast and unexpected mode of transport down the street with my shopping.

a slope near the railway station Is that the slope just as you're coming out of the station? Bloody hell! You did well to stop yourself at all without the aid of a grappling hook and airbags. I emailed KAUST again and fessed up to the errors in my form. Their help desk kindly sorted it out and said basically "just get the transcripts to us" and I'll still have a fair shake. Huzzah! The bad news is that I still have to sit something called a GRE to prove I'm not a numpty, a degree nowadays no longer being proof in and of itself. The questions are straightforward enough but the nearest test centre is either in Dublin or London. Dublin is closer but seems to be a lot more expensive to get to. Looks like I'm headed for the big city sometime soon. To do a two hour test on computer in some building somewhere. Then come home. -Nick

Let us know if you have any spare time to meet up! My itinerary will probably consist of fly down - do test - fly back with presumably a kip in there somewhere too. The test centre is here: PROMETRIC, 2ND FLOOR PELLIPAR HOUSE 9 CLOAK LANE LONDON EC4R 2RU It's close to Cannon Street subway station, apparently. I'd like to take the test as soon as possible- there's space on the 27th of January, which would mean coming down on the 26th then leaving either late on the 27th or early on the 28th. I hate to ask but most of my cash at the moment is geared towards taking my folks to Denmark for their birthdays... Do any of the London Hubbers have space available on their living room floors for a night next Tuesday? Your reward will be great in heaven and you will be owed a favour by Toy-fu. -Nick

Sorry Nick, I am actually moving flat on the 27th, so my place is a bit boxed up at the moment. And the other London Hubbers don't actually live in London. If you do come down on those dates though, the London Toy Fair is running.

Balls. Cheapest hotel I can find it is, then!
London Toy Fair? Good God, what a coincidence!
No, really. I didn't know it was on. Isn't that press/retailers only?

Nick check the hostels. Prices start from £5 and if you want a private room they will be much cheaper than a comparable hotel. Central London has dozens of the buggers. Hostelworld.com is a good place to look.
