When I saw Bruce Almighty (starring Jim Carrey) the only thing I liked about it was Morgan Freeman as God.
With Evan Almighty (tomorrow, 4.40pm, ITV1), they mercifully dropped Jim Carrey, kept Morgan Freeman as God, and introduced a genuinely engaging, funny and uplifting story: Steve Carell the uncaring congressman being dragged kicking and screaming into building an ark.
It may be I am the only person on this forum who reacts positively to this film, but if you aren't busy tomorrow afternoon, at least consider giving it a shot.
The animal performances are very impressive indeed. No CG used except where absolutely necessary.
PS The film's trailers completely misrepresent its pace and style, and make it look wackier than it really is.

PS The film's trailers completely misrepresent its pace and style, and make it look wackier than it really is. I assume that was done intentionally because the film is presumably aimed at the people who like wacky comedy. I never saw the first film because, other than The Mask, I haven't enjoyed anything Jim Carrey has been in. I think I must have missed the second film for that same reason even though Carrey isn't in it.

That's the thing that bugs me. The second film is marketed as if it's in the same style as the first (and the trailer makes it look like the first), but actually it's much slower paced and more thoughtful and witty. People who like zaniness and went to see Evan Almighty on the basis of the trailer would have been disappointed. I had the opposite reaction.

It's an old trick in movies. If you lose the lead star of the film the producers try to appeal the sequel to the people who enjoyed the first. In the 80's the Police Academy films lost their star Steve Guttenberg (I don't know the reason why he left but I'm guessing he read the script for the fourth film and thought 'screw this, this one is just too stupid') so they replaced him with a new character that had the same traits as him but was nowhere near in the same acting calibre as him. The same goes for the sequel to Jim Carrey's film The Mask. He didn't do the sequel to that one so they brought in a replacement who tried to emulate Carrey but couldn't.
In the case of Evan Almighty they knew they couldn't make the film like the first so they mislead the public into thinking it was the same as the first in the trailers and that it was just as good with or without Carrey.
