I'm back at work tomorrow and Friday so hopefully this is the start of a full time position at this new workplace. The problem I'm facing at the moment though is money. All of my bills for the month have now come out of my account and I'm skint until my latest dole money arrives at the weekend. To tide me over until then I've had to borrow some money off my father which I'm largely reluctant to do but I had to.

I shall keep my fingers crossed for you Ralph. Hopefully you will continue to do well in forthcoming months. Had a bit of a fright yesterday evening, got the news that my sister has been in a car accident on her way down to Kent. Fortunately it was not as serious as I first feared. It necessitated a trip to hospital, but it looks like there is no permanent damage and she is now safely back at home this evening. Karl Blimey. Glad everthing's ok, Karlos.

Indeed.
I was hyper-shit at work today, not helped by my computer continually crashing. Roll on tomorrow night and curry time.

Glad to hear your sister is still intact after her accident, Karl.
I'm off to a workmate's leaving do tomorrow evening, then my only day of work on Saturday followed by Hayseed Dixie (country & western themed AC/DC tribute band) that evening. I may not be good for much come Sunday.

I've heard some Hayseed Dixie. Had a pretty eventful few weeks. Will probably talk about them sometime. Pretty busy balancing full time work and full time study right now. ===KEN

Yes, but if you ask a person looking to buy a computer if they want one on which they can change the OS or one where the OS is fixed but it can't be corrupted by viruses, I think most home users would opt for the latter. I'd say a happy compromise would be where the OS is on a plug-and-play chip. You can change/update the OS only by switching the chip in one of the plug-and-play slots. Yeah, everyone says Macs are better virus-wise. But as long as my computers at work use Windows, and it's what most people have, I'll continue to take my chances with MS. I suppose that's the kind of apathy that maintains their monopoly. Martin You see you are part of the problem If there was consumer appetite for you want then the market would provide it. For most the benefits of an open platform out weigh the drawbacks. I find it mildly amusing that you would vote for a third-party in a general election (assuming you are still a liberal!) even though most people don't want that party in government, but won't vote with your wallet for a better computer on the basis that everyone else uses Windows. Not that I think Macs are better, they are just less virsus prone.

Not that I think Macs are better, they are just less virsus prone. I guess I just care more about political ideology than I do about computers. I just had a rant there because I can't get my head round the logic of making things that can be infected remotely. It's not one of my top ten things I would change about the world, so I'm not going to get off my arse and do anything about it. I'll vote with my wallet on things that matter to me (animal welfare, fairtrade, environmental footprint, etc.). Plus, I'm only on the second PC I've ever owned and hopefully won't be replacing it for many a year. As for voting on the ballot paper (and we'll no doubt have more threads on this subject soon), the Lib Dems aren't the third party in my constituency - they're the first party. And there is no party in the UK that most people want in government - none of them have a majority of the popular vote. Argh, planned to finish work at 3 today, ended up leaving the office at 6.30. My in-tray was so under control yesterday but a ton of urgent stuff came in to deal with. Looking forward to the pre-election period, as all the Whitehall Departments will then go quiet and stop sending me work. At the moment they're in overdrive trying to push stuff through that they've been working on before the Government turns upside-down. Martin

Both Labour and the Tories are currently shooting themselves in the foot. Labour is bickering about this bullying row fiasco while the Tories have snobs like Nicholas Winterton who believe that they are a more superior race of human beings than the people who they want to vote for them.
This however isn't the thread for political opinions and so I'll leave it there but one thing I am looking forward to is Brown's supposed appearance in the Iraq War Inquiry. He promised that he would appear in it in either February or March this year and he would appear in it before the General Election. Will he keep his promise and appear in something that could derail his election chances? I'm guessing he won't and he knew that when he made the promise but said it anyway just to make the public believe he is a genuinely honest person.

I feel absolutely terrible, partly due to a months' long ongoing sinus/allergy and lack of sleep problem, but largely thanks to work going down the shitter. I'm tired of the condescension from the Bosses and the implication that I'm some sort of moron. It's gotten to the point this week where I dread opening emails from them and now have stomach upset. I haven't felt this strung out emotionally for years. Nothing like spending part of your week crying quietly in your lab. Good thing I work alone.

IT problems at work the past few days drove me utterly demented. However, a few of us went out for a curry and a drink after work yesterday and it was a good night.

I shall add my positive thoughts to those of others winging your way in the coming week. Thank you to folk here your your best wishes for my sister by the way. She is doing ok, still in a fair amount of pain but I just thank my lucky stars it was not any worse than it was. After various things that have happened this week I found myself extremely tired this weekend. I spent Friday evening curled up on the sofa watching "The Forbidden Kingdom". It did wonders for my mood. Wonderful film - even if Yuen Wo Ping is a little more attached to wire-work in his Kung-Fu films than is entirely to my taste. How can I not love a film where not only does Jackie Chan play a master of Drunken Fist style, but he gets to have an epic throw-down with Jet Li, despite them being on the same side, and one of the villians henchman is the Bride with White Hair, and despite cramming all that in it works as a straight-up martial arts action movie? I can't not love it really. So having seen this morning that it was in a two-a-tenner deal I picked it up along with Goldeneye (a Bond movie I have come to appreciate more as I have aged). So that was my viewing this evening sorted out as well. I do love a good sale. Karl

Not good Phil. Hope you shake it off soon.
Got up and went on a fifteen minute walk/errand. In that time - dryness, rain and then snow.
It's nearly fecking March, enough of this shit!

I didn't realise until yesterday that the English league cup final is live on BBC 1. Great, I thought, I can watch football. But it is pelting it with rain and I think it'll be the same for Wembley so I have a feeling the final might be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Funnily enough, it doesn't have a roof that closes. The English FA in their infinite wisdom decided not to follow the example of the Millenium stadium in Cardiff. I've seen footage of the top of Wembley stadium and I think it looks like it has sections that look to close over but I've been told that the roof of Wembley doesn't close.

Went around to my mates house last night and had a few beers. His fiance cooked up a lovely chilli and rice and the three of us spent the following hour or so watching a Frankie Boyle DVD. All in all it was one of the better Saturday nights I've had in a long while.

I'm off down the pub in an hours time to check out the pub quiz again. Last week the team I was in won but it was a pretty weak bunch of teams so that didn't really surprise me. Probably the funniest thing about last weeks quiz was one teams choice of name for their team. That said team called themselves Mike Hunt which should never be said quickly!
