Almost half a million quid for a NES game? Er, I think I'll pass up on that one. To be honest I doubt it would be worth anywhere near as much as that and I'd be surprised if anybody actually placed a bid for it. According to the games wiki entry the NTSC copies are like gold dust and only one or two are known to exist. Still, I wouldn't pay such a silly amount for the game.

I'd love to own something like that but not for that kind of money. I doubt that the winner will ever pay up. According to the wiki page another copy went for 'only' $41,300. Although the current one is sealed and we all know how that drives up the price.
Nick, I would imagine you'd be able to get 50 copies of this for 50p on Yahoo Auctions Japan?

As far as I can work out it's like a very early version of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. I think you use something similar to the Wii Fit board for the game while the game is like a clone of the old Track and Field game. Either way that's one game I'm not interested in purchasing.

John, I'm sorry to say that Yahoo Japan is not the gold mine it used to be, mostly due to the Yen nearly doubling in price against the pound since 2007. What used to appear as a bargain, while finishing at the same Yen price, is now ball-quakingly expensive.

That game doesn't seem anything I'd be that bothered about, one of those it just has interest because it's rare, rather than particulary interesting or 'historically' significant. Having said that, Nintendo collectors might say that about G2 Stunticons and Protectobots!

Whenever I buy a game I always like to play it. As I have already mentioned elsewhere I recently brought the Collectors Editions of both NTSC Zelda N64 games off Ebay and one of the first things I did was play Ocarina of Time (I'll get around to Majora's Mask sometime). I like collecting things but I only collect things that I can play or read myself first. The temptation would just be too great if I brought a mint sealed NES game like that. I would sooner or later end up tearing open the seal (thus instantly knocking several hundred quid off its price) just to play it.

Having said that, Nintendo collectors might say that about G2 Stunticons and Protectobots! It's pretty much in the same league. It's an oddity that has pretty much no value for its original function.
