I just received an ominously named "Correspondence from KAUST" from the university I've applied to in Saudi Arabia, with their decision about my much-fretted-over application to study there. It'd be a massive leap as I've never been outside Scotland for longer than a few weeks on holidays and such. Hubbers with long memories will remember my trials and tribulations with assembling references and dossing in a London hostel above a pub before sitting a four hour exam whose results would be emailed directly to the university.
Today I was beginning to wonder if it had all been worth it. They said that they would get back to me about my (late due to the exam) application I don't have a first class degree which is their usual requirement and I have precious little of the "leadership quality" they prize so highly to show them either by documented experience or as a facet of my personality.
Their response is below.
"Dear Nicholas Davidson,
I am writing with a personal invitation to you to join the MS Program in Environmental Sc. & Engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in August 2010. You have been selected from a highly competitive candidate pool for the opportunity to be part of a diverse community of scholars from across the globe, who want to contribute to advancing science and technology in an enabling environment with state-of-the-art research facilities and top-notch faculty.
I am also delighted to inform you that along with your admission, you will receive a KAUST Fellowship. This Fellowship provides a range of benefits including tuition, health insurance, and on-campus housing, all at no cost to you, as well as a 12-month stipend. (No taxes are levied on this income by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.) The base stipend for a student entering with a BS degree is $20,000. You may also qualify for an Academic Excellence Award of up to $10,000."
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! *runs around the room with jumper over head* I'll be sad to leave Toys'r'us and am freaking out juuust a tad over leaving Britain for whole terms at a time, but on the bright side my academic career is moving forward again and I'll be getting the chance to do (hopefully) important research that might make peoples' lives better. Huzzah!
