I always try to pick up the special editions where I can, but rarely have time to watch all the extras. Where there's a special box or other physical extras, then I make a special effort as I like the look on the shelf.
What are your movie buying habits? Do you think those of us who spend the extra are chumps? Do you buy them because they're special and for no other reason?

The main thing with me is that if there's an extended director's cut of a film I like, that's the version I must have (LoTR, Kingdom of Heaven, Stargate), since I have always found them to have greater depth. The other stuff I can take or leave - but I tend to buy 2-disc versions over 1-disc just in case there's something worth having. Fancy packaging - forget it. Martin

Depends on the new content and how soon after the previous release it is. Only two I can think of are Lilo and Stitch and Serenity.

I'm always buying special editions of DVD's and make an effort to watch the special features because I find behind the scenes documentaries interesting - especially if they're well made. The actual physical box that the DVD's come in also appeals to me and many a time I have brought them largely because I like the look of the box set sitting on the shelf. One such notable example is the Indiana Jones original trilogy boxset. That is a wonderful, thick box set which contains four discs (3 films and a special features disc) and I think it looks far superior than the slim-line version of the same boxset that was released a little later.
