Good news, everyone! This morning, Hubris (a Transformers fanzine) earned its 250th subscriber! It's a cause for celebration. So what? You might ask, thousands of people went to see Transformers and its popular sequel, Transformers Revenge of the Fallen at the cinema. 250 is but a mere proportion of the Transformers' immense popularity! That is true. However, consider the following limiting factors; - Hubris is "unofficial" and therefore falls under the radar of most fans' collector-like sensibilities
- Hubris is editorially-biased towards the Marvel USA/UK Transformers comics, its characters and creators. This is but a small niche of the sprawling Transformers universe
- Hubris devotes nearly half of its page count to prose stories. Many fans would favour the worst Transformers comic book strips than the best text-stories
- Hubris is a non-Internet, print 'n' pulp entity. People are reluctant to pay for something to be printed, especially in light of the popularity of Transformers on the likes of YouTube, blogs, Facebook and Twitter... all free (once ISP fees have been paid for) to anyone with a fast enough connection
The above points are mere speculation on my part based on what I've read on various message boards, but I do think 250 people, regularly subscribing and devouring "home made" Transformers in print is cause for celebration. So thank you from the bottom of this old fashioned editor's heart to everyone who has subscribed. You support means a great deal and is very much appreciated! For more information on Hubris, and the current subscription, please visit: www.the-hub.co.uk/hubris/subscribe

Awesome news, duder!
I guess some of us are just suckers for a decent TF mag, and Hubris has proven itself to be the best one available. It has been an honour to contribute to it's hallowed features!

Hm. After reading your post, Graham, the conclusion I was left with is that 99.9% of Transformers enthusiasts have no taste. Every one of your points _against_ Hubris should be a point in its favour in my view. Ho hum!

Many fans online (I have observed) either won't touch fan-produced stuff with a bargepole* or want their fan stuff for free (Mosiacs would not be as popular if it wasn't free online, for example). It's a peculiarity of Transformers fandom, where fan stuff is often dismissed out of hand as it doesn't 'count'. So in that context, 250 subscribers for a printed fanzine for which a small charge is levied to get a copy is pretty darned good.

*Even at TF conventions, fan stuff is a hard sell

The reason why most fans don't touch fan-made stuff is that more than half of it is bad. They've been bitten once by terrible TF fanfiction and they refuse to give another one a try. This has a knock-on effect for all TF fanfiction and fanzines regardless of whether they are good or not.
Oh, and congratulation G for reaching such a milestone.

Thanks, guys!
It seems the recent Easter weekend was the ideal time for some fanzine shopping!

(It testifies to the high quality of the product I reckon) I don't mean to appear indelicate, but I was hoping you'd have time to post your feedback re: Hubris #13 by now. I normally wait very patiently for your thoughts, as I do enjoy your comments. *looks down at scuffed, untied shoes and shrugs*

With all the other bonkersness ongoing it had completely slipped my mind. My apologies. I shall rectify that oversight this weekend. *offers deep and respectful bow of apology* Karl

I think I might indulge in a bit of Hubris ordering within the next week. I'm vastly behind with my ordering and I think I'm already about three issues behind as it is.

I have no interest in Star Wars or Star Trek fanfic. Mind you most of the Star Wars Expanded Universe is pretty much fanfic, certainly from George Lucas' POV. I'd probably not give TF fanfic a secondthought if I'd not given Eugenesis a chance. So yay for Hubris in the face of all this adversity.

Hubris is actually the only fanfic I have any interest for. I generally don't bother with any other fanfic as there is far too much of it floating around the net and it can get quite confusing if you're reading fanfic covering the same stories but from several different writers. It's best to choose one site that writes fanfic and stick with that.
