On Wednesday I received my boxed Nintendo 64 that I had won off Ebay the previous week and I immediately got down to playing it. I had a quick go on Mario Party 2 (my favourite Mario Party game out of all of them) on Wednesday but I didn't play the console at all yesterday. Today I have a day off work so I plan to start on Super Mario 64 - a game which I had so much fun playing almost ten years ago when I first got my original N64 console. After that I think I might go for a bit of Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing and then try and locate on Ebay some games that I either liked at the time but no longer have or games that I have never played before. One such game that I've always wanted to play is Jet Force Gemini. Rareware made some excellent games for the console like both Banjo-Kazoooie games, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64 and to a lesser extent Mickey's Adventure Speedway. Jet Force Gemini was also made by them and got some quite good reviews in magazines at the time so I might be tempted to hunt that game down in the near future.

Just finished an almost two hour run on Super Mario 64 and have picked up 18 stars out of the 120 in the game. I plan to play the game again later on and so I expect my star tally will rise to 25+ by the end of the day.
I must also try and locate my Diddy Kong Racing cartridge. That was a classic game and although I never beat Wizpig (the main boss in the game) when I originally played it I still hold the game in high regard.

I ended up with 28 stars in Super Mario 64 yesterday after just one days play. I could have got at least one more but I was having trouble finding the eight red coins in Cool, Cool Mountain. This brassed me off slightly because when I originally played the game back in circa 2001 I found all eight red coins with no problem whatsoever and when I played the DS version of the game I also found all eight of the red coins but I cannot seem to find the eighth red coin for anything!
Anyway enough of that! Here's the intro for Diddy Kong Racing which for me anyway is the most memorable part of the game. The racing in the game was excellent but I just found this intro more memorable.

Now up to 41 stars in Super Mario 64. I sorted the eight red coins problem I was faced with earlier before hitting another problem on the Big Boo's Haunt level which I eventually managed to sort out. Am hoping to reach the 50 star mark by the end of the second days play.

Now up to about 55 stars in Super Mario 64. I can't remember the tally exactly but what I do know is that I completed Lethal Lava Land in one sitting whilst getting Mario's arse burned several times along the way (anybody who's played the game will know what I'm talking about).

I really must grab Mario 64 off the Wii shop. Definitely one of my favourites but I don't have a N64 any more so I only have the DS version. I still like the DS version but there were some things I preferred in the original.

I prefer the original to the DS version. Although the DS version had 30 extra stars, several mini-games and the choice of four characters the controls on the DS verison just weren't as good as the N64 original.
The N64 bug is actually spreading throughout my family at the moment because I'm playing on a newly acquired N64, my brother is playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Wii Virtual Console and my sister acquired an N64 and a few games off a market stall yesterday so that she can play one or two games.

Yesterday's play ended on 69 stars (the daily tally is getting lower due to the increasing difficulty in the game) whilst today I've picked up a few more so far and have also been almost pulling my hair out with frustration at some points. Cue lots of talking and swearing at the TV!

Yesterday's play ended on 80 stars for Super Mario 64 so now I only have another 40 to find which won't be easy. Because this thread isn't just a blog about how many stars I've picked up in the game I thought I'd also share this - the end credits of Mario Kart 64. I loved these end credits which show parts of all of the tracks in the game along with some great music. The end credits though could only be unlocked if completed the game on 150cc or Mirrored difficulty levels.

My daily star count is getting lower. I didn't play much on the game yesterday so I only managed to pick up seven stars to add to the tally. At this moment today I've picked up about that amount already with several more on the way.

I'm now up to the magic total of 100 stars in Super Mario 64 which means there are only another 20 to find. Unfortunately I know that some of them are incredibly difficult to obtain so I may be sometime trying to find at least five of them.

Yesterday's play ended on 112 stars but I probably won't be playing the game at all today. With only another 8 stars to find on paper it will be very easy but in reality its the opposite. A few of the stars are still hidden in the last level in the game Tick Tock Clock - a giant grandfather clock where Mario has to walk around the inside of the clock avoiding dangerous hazards in the form of the clock mechanisms which could push him off the edge of a platform or twist around while he is standing on something causing him to fall to his doom.
I think this video demonstrates exactly what I am trying to say!

Nothing new to report today on the number of stars I've collected (although you're probably not interested anyway!). I've recently had a go on the game to collect a star for collecting 100 coins in one of the worlds but failed time after time after time. The reason for this is that Mario has an annoying tendency to always want to get hit by enemies. If you kill an enemy they'll yield anything from 1 to 5 coins and there are a few enemies I tackled on this world in question. Problem is that the world is elevated above ground and if you fall off the edge you lose a life. With Mario always getting pushed around by the enemies he tends to lose a good many lives by falling over the edge and this is what makes the task harder. A camera that doesn't want to stay where you want it to also doesn't help so jumps can also see Mario falling to his doom. Maybe I'll try again later because I do wan to complete the game but, as I've said in a previous post, the last few stars are tough to get.

Just picked up one star today - the 100 coin star that I was having trouble with yesterday. I don't think I'll bother with anymore again until tomorrow.

I've had a few days off from playing Super Mario 64 and today I went on it and picked up another two stars. A tried for a third one by getting the star for collecting 100 coins in the notoriously frustrating Tick Tock Clock but only managed 98 coins until Mario hurled himself off the edge of a platform!

Another classic N64 game that I will be playing very soon is Banjo Kazooie. The characters in the game are just part of the fun to be had in it and here are the end credits cast list just to show you.

Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride are my absolute favourite levels in SM64. Usually when I replay it I rush to unlock them, get all the stars in both, then do all the remaining levels. The 100 coin stars are my favourite out of the lot. The rest of the game seems so easy after doing those two.

The rest of the game is a walkover compared to those two levels but I have to say that Rainbow Ride is my favourite out of the two. I can't exactly think of my favourite SM64 level because they all have bits in them that I both love and hate but I think that Tiny Huge Island is my least favourite level while the music that plays in the water levels is my favourite track in the game.
I haven't actually played the game at all in the past couple of days or so but at last count I had 117 stars with the last three being in known locations.

I've now found a website where I can download all of the music from Super Mario 64 (as well as many other games). My life is now complete!
