Hi all,
Can anybody find the Gurren Lagann anime for me on DVD, region 2 (aka all of Europe - so what they sell in the UK would be fine).
I've looked on ebay, and things look strange there. In the USA, there's a 3 DVD boxset - but the region is not good for Europe.
In Europe, there seem to be three seperate DVDs with region 2, each containing 7 to 9 episodes of the series.
The problem is, on ebay, ONE DVD box is like 30 GBP and up - making the entire series cost over one hundred pounds.
100 GBP seems like a bit much for 27 episodes of an anime...
Anyways - am I looking wrong? Do these really cost that much?
And would someone be willing to recieve funds via paypal, buy these for me in the UK at HMV or something and ship them my way?
If anybody can help out - lemme know.
Thanks! Pete

They really do cost that much. If you look on amazon.co.uk or play.com you may be able to get them for about 25 GBP a set.
Personally I'm waiting for a complete series boxset, but seeing as it's Bandai Entertainment, it may take another 5-10 years.

Unfortunately they do cost that much. Several years ago I was into Anime shows such as Kiddy Grade and Chobits (and a few of the naughty anime's that were on sale in the UK) and these all cost approx. £19 for each DVD. I ended up buying entire series of a number of anime's and I think I must have spent over £200 in all in just over a year.

I bought the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya on DVD legally here in Poland - but it cost me about 50 GBP for all 4 DVDs. I also bought the Mobile Suite Gundam Compilation movies for a grand total of about 20 GBP.
Ergo my shock that Gurren Lagann costs that much.
I'll get it, since it probably won't come out here in Poland - but I'll have to save up for it....
As for Haruhi Season 2 -I'll get that from Japan, since I've read that the Japanese DVDs have english subtitles...
But again - need to save up for that.
It's expensive.... but I'm sick of downloading and don't want to burn DVDs because I like the boxes and having everything nice and nifty on my shelf...
Oh well...
Maybe they'll release a giftset for a lower price together?

As for Haruhi Season 2 -I'll get that from Japan, since I've read that the Japanese DVDs have english subtitles... A couple of years back I bought the Japanese releases of an anime I follow off of ebay after learning about the English subtitles. To say that they were English subtitles is being generous. They were translated in such a way that a lot of the time things just made no sense. I could follow the series, just about, but it was difficult. A couple of examples would be; One character asks another "Oh, what are you doing here?" in a polite manner when another arrives at her door, and recieves a stern look and the reply "There is no all-encompassing things!" In the actual English release that reply was "You're running late! Lets go!" Another example is the repetition of "I'll fall to it" whenever someone is given food, and "I am dead" instead of "Can you imagine it?" Just fair warning there. Personally I'll wait for an official English releases of Haruhi 2 & Vanishment, though the wait is killing me...

Unfortunately that kind of price point seems to be becoming the standard. Bandai Visual seem to have lead a race to the top of the price ceiling. I noticed it when I was idly looking to see what price Gundam 00 was - and took a step back in shock when I saw that it was £30 for eight episodes. (In the end I saw it rental anyway so it wasn't an issue). After a while where things were available for reasonably low prices the cost of foreign (non-english language) animated material seems to be rising quite a lot for some reason. Karl

There is no all-encompassing things!
Anime and philosophy all in one. But damn that series was hilarious.

I took the plunge and ordered all 3 TTGL DVD sets from amazon.co.uk - apparently they now DO deliver to Poland. They apparently haven't charged my card yet - will they do that only once all the merchandise is ready to ship? Anyways - I'm sick and tired of waiting - and I'm not going to wait any longer. After this, I want to get the Neon Genesis Evangelion box set - that's like 140 GBP. Whatever. Screw it. I don't care. Karl - as for the cost of anime going up - see this link: www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=32984&st=0&start=0By no means is this meant to be the alpha and omega of answers - but it's a start. Pete EDIT: Oh yeah - the whole series + shipping came to 105 GBP. It's a hell of a lot - but then again, keeping it in perspective - it's like Friday-Sunday on the town with my ex-girlfriend. In fact, I spent the last two months dating other women and stopped when I realized I was spending money on boring girls. Better to spend the money on anime. Especially since my ex apparently loves me again...or at least she now calls me on a regular daily basis and texts me wishing me sunshine and happiness.. Err... point is - I won't go out for a few weeks and that's that. I just can't live without Gurren Lagann and other anime any longer. I will also probably hold my nose and pick up the AVD Macross DVDs sanctioned by Harmony Gold just so I can have Macross in Japanese. Pete

I am fairly sanguine about these things. Fortunes rise and fall for all industries, it is part of the nature of things. Animated television is no more immune to the fluctuations of the economy than live-action television. I do think that the ad-supported web-distribution idea has some potential if the kinks could be worked out of it. Whether anyone would be willing to take the plunge when it might be less work to just ignore the international market and concentrate of fighting for a share of the diminishing domestic cake is an inponderable until someone tries it I guess. If you have a multi-region DVD player and can find the Madman Entertainment release (It is R4 as I recall) then that is pretty good. They used the Animego Masters, just packaged onto fewer discs. They have pretty good subs and a good reproduction of the original mono sound mix. (It also has the subbed interview with Ishiguro over the last two episodes as an Easter Egg, and some superb liner notes - English language lyrics for all the songs for example) Not sure what they go for on the secondary market though so I have not idea if they would be more or less expensive than ADV's R1 release. Well, Gurren Lagann is on its' way to me. Now that I'm...resigned...to paying such high prices for DVDs... Next goal: Neon Genesis Evangelion - the complete series. Not interested in the End of Evangelion movie or the new You are not alone. I totaly loved the first series. Hopefully I'll be able to get it off amazon in June. Um... And... this thread is kind of pointless now - isn't it? Pete
