Good grief, I'm tired!
In an odd turn of luck, my flight back from Scotland was on Saturday morning so I made it home before Inverness airport was closed on Sunday.
The thing about rural Scotland is that everything is miles away from everything. The crematorium was over an hour away and we were running late. Now I can say I've been in a hearse at almost 70 mph. The service itself was touching and a fitting tribute to my Great Uncle.
And now it's back to reality, with oddly arrogant customers who don't seem to appreciate how fragile our lives really are.

So, the Great Lab Move of 2010 is here. The Bosses have so far been perfectly congenial, and the new guy they brought with them seems nice as well. Everything is going to plan so far, but we only packed boxes and moved easy equipment like microscopes and computers today. Tomorrow a six foot polishing bench and massive fumehood need to be removed. I plan to hopefully not be involved in any of the lifting. I can't lift much weight anyway, and there isn't much room to maneuver in the old lab, so I'd likely just be in the way.
I had a colleague who has been in the steel industry for many years help me with my resume late last week. He has contacts through out the industry for me to send it to. But now I'm getting scared. Word will get back to my boss that I've sent out resumes, it's such a tiny field of people it's inevitable. I'm worried about him being angry and resentful about it, because he didn't take another employee leaving very well in the past. And it will probably seem ungrateful to him given that he's just moved the lab to new premises, after all the complaints I made about our soon to be old lab.
Obviously, if I let that fear run things, I'll never apply for another job in my life. But it still scares the bejesus out of me. I don't want to end up with enemies.

Word will get back to my boss that I've sent out resumes, it's such a tiny field of people it's inevitable. I'm worried about him being angry and resentful about it, because he didn't take another employee leaving very well in the past. My old boss didn't react well to people telling her they'd been applying for other jobs only after they'd accepted an offer, so when I got bored and decided to look for pastures new, I told her in advance, and she took it much better. Unlike in the other cases, where people gave their month's notice when all the work planning for the next several months had been done and projects set in motion that were suddenly thrown off be the loss of staff, in my case the boss was able to assign me to short-term projects and plan for my leaving well in advance (although not knowing exactly when or if I was leaving), and it was much less disruptive to the team. I'm now still on good terms with my old boss - having lunch with her next week, actually. But there would have been ill-feeling if I'd kept my plans secret and therefore deprived the team of the information it needed to plan the work of the coming months. But that's just my case. People are different, and what may be a good idea in one instance may be very bad in another. Martin

From well hung to odd shaped balls, have a looked at this monster 60m drop goal from Francois Steyn in a recent French rugby union game:

Have Smith's stopped giving away plastic bags now? I went in yesterday and got some magazines. After putting my change away I noticed my mags were just stacked up with one of those vouchers (£2 off if you spend £10000 on books or something) laying on top.
I asked for a bag and reached for some change because I suddenly remembered that last time I went in a Smiths they'd started charging for them. However I was told "we don't have bags". I'm not sure if she meant they'd run out or if they've just stopped doing them (which is what her tone suggested). I probably should have asked but I was in shock and holding the queue up, so just left.

Yes! Hurrah!
The webcam has been down for the last few days, so well spotted that it was working again, Ralph.
We have four chicks. Because they are white you can see them from the ground with the naked eye when they stand up in the nest. Best view is through the telescope, but our webcam RULES this year.
Expect tales of them being beaten up by seagulls and ending up on the ground in a few months time when they start learning to fly.

Booked off work today the Friday and Monday either side of AA this year so I'll be up there on the Friday this year and leaving again on the Monday unlike last year when I had to come in on the Saturday morning and leave again Sunday evening.

KAUST have asked me to attend an orientation weekend in London. Guess which weekend? If you guessed "The same weekend as Botcon", you win a coconut! I emailed back to say I had a prior engagement then that I had already spent a lot of money on and asked if there were any other dates or locations available.
There is another event two weeks earlier that I can actually get to. I'm quite looking forward to it.
I've never been to Egypt.

I have just spent a few minutes watching the Peregrine chicks. A very relaxing antidote to a somewhat poor day.
Found out today that there will be another Jousting competition at Linlithgow Palace this July. Might well go along to that and cheer on a red knight or a blue knight, it was rather a fun day out last year so I think it would be well worth repeating.
Nick - am I reading this right, you are going to Egypt for an orientation thingy for KAUST? Because if so that is a rather fantastic opportunity in its own right.
Dinogrrl - a difficult one there. Hard to say which is the better cause of action when it comes to telling or not telling your boss. I guess it is something that you would have to decide on the basis of how you think he will react in either scenario. Like Martin I have always told my bosses when I have been looking elsewhere, but fortunately both bosses in question have been very supportive types who have done whatever they could to help so I guess I have been lucky that way.

Hmm, thanks for your input guys. I will talk to my retired co-worker when she returns from vacation, as before I was hired she worked with another woman who also got tired of the job and the Boss and looked for another job. I need to ask her what she did, then sit down and think about whether I will inform Dave or not. My job doesn't involve projects, it's a workaday monkey job. But you do need some lead time training people plus there's the problem of me being the only one working this lab and the Boss being in Canada most of the time.
Bugger it. He is going to need a heads up. But I'm going to do it by email, because he's too focused on moving the lab and getting things running this week. Then he's off on vacation at the end of the month. I don't know how long I can put off submitting my resume either. BUGGER.

Good luck with it all, Dinogrrl, wish I had some advice, but guess you've just got to trust your instincts and do what you feel is right.
Hallo Sportsfans!!!!
Piglet's 4th birthday in a month, so we're planning ahead and getting some prezzies in. Going for alot of outdoor/gardeny stuff, now we've got a garden. Dear God this stuff's expeeeeeenseeeeve! I'd considered building Piglet a wooden wendy house myself, but materials would cost more than a plastic one, so prob just go for that. Wont look half as good, but atleast it wont collapse on her like anything I've constructed may well do. Also swings, slides and sandpits being investigated. Gunna be like an adventure play-ground, baby!

I was starting to get worried about you for a moment!
Before I got into work today I thought I'd pop into a local garage shop for something to eat. I picked up a Ginsters Scotch Egg Bar and brought it thinking that, due to its small size, would cost no less than about 60p. When I was charged £1.80 for it I was shocked but still brought it anyway. This left me a bit short of money for work today so I went back home, picked up a bit extra cash and set out again only to miss the bus I normally catch. I caught the next bus and dragged myself into work five minutes late at 8.05am. One of the supervisors wasn't too pleased that I had come in late and so had marked down on the signing in sheet my starting time as 8.15am. I therefore lost quarter of an hour but what annoyed me the most is that there are a couple of Polish workers who drag themselves into work at 8.15am everyday and they're allowed to sign themselves in as 8.00am starters every day. I came in before them but I'm credited as turning up late for work whereas they are credited as turning up on time. It really does seem that in factory and warehouse job there is one rule for the English workers and another for the Poles.

Ugh, favoritism in the workplace. Bollocks to that.
Rebuilding the lab continues, although now I look around and see so much stuff to be done and the Bosses leave on Saturday. They did succeed in wrangling a 400 pound fumehood onto a trestle table today, although it was seriously dodgy in places. Still working on recalibrating the main scope, and will have that done tomorrow, but I can see that I won't be able to get actual work done and out to the client like I'd promised. Crap.

Hang in there, Dino.
My new shed arrives this morning. We're soon going to be a two shed family! That's right, baby, TWO SHEDS!!! There's a stone built one already, and we decided to put a wooden one under a big tree in the corner of the garden, 'cos there's nothing elese we could do in that area (other than perhaps make it the Shockprowl Love Grotto). TWO SHEDS!!!! All I need now are a Masterpiece Soundwave and Shockwave, master the power of Telekinesis, and make love to Japanese Triplets and my life will be complete!

I got up this morning and just before I set off for work I decided to flick through some of the movie channels. After a short while I landed on the Horror Channel which, at that time in the morning wasn't showing any films but it was showing a few trailers of upcoming films that will be shown on the channel. One such film was this obvious rip-off of the live action Transformers movies. It was called Transmorphers: The Fall of Man and it it intrigued me as to how bad it really was. I've never heard of it before and considering that it has landed on the Horror Channel it must be one of those cheap B movies that are made to cash in on a recent big hit. When it comes to a screen near me I think I'll watch it.

One of the supervisors came up to me today at work and asked me if I was willing to do a twelve hour shift for three days next week plus weekends. I said no but I have a feeling that this is now going to go against me and they'll only want me into work for about three days next week at the most.

Going out to the pub quiz in just over an hours time. Hopefully my team will finish higher than last this week which is the place we have finished in for the past two weeks.

Having a good long weekend so far (off Monday and Tuesday for the Victoria Day holiday), had a fun time at Laserquest in honour of Gavin's birthday. Although a couple of nice bruises are developing - one on my knee as a result of going hard into a wall that I didn't see, and the other on my back as a result of sliding down a ramp backwards after I tripped under fire from three members of the other team.
A fun time though, and my injuries haven't interfered with the work I had to do today. Once again I my picking paint out of my hair, fingernails etc as a result of painting the bathroom. Once it dries tomorrow morning it should be a nice white colour (handy as there are no windows in it the room so not a lot of natural light. A fiddly job though, given all the things that need to be masked off, removed and otherwise made safe.
With that done I have put my feet up and caught up with some Doctor Who (both old and new). Now it is time for a nice cold glass bottle of Coke I think.
