"Dr Boss estimates that Nasa's Kepler mission, due for launch in March, should begin finding some of these Earth-like planets within the next few years."
So hang on, they will be able to get a spaceship within (I presume) telescope range of such planets? As in we'll be able to see what's on the surface!?!?!
Am I getting the wrong idea or is that the most exciting news in years?

Am I getting the wrong idea or is that the most exciting news in years? No, I think you may be jumping the gun a bit here. He isn't talking about being able to see surface features on these objects. There is a branch of optical astronomy that is devoted to identifying planet-candidate objects by observing the apparently dimming and brightening of stars as they partially occult them. Up till now it has only been possible to do this for Jovian-class objects, but improved telescopes and optical interferometry should allow us to do it with small objects (in Earth's weight class) in the near-future. I'm afraid that is all he is talking about. We are a bit away from the ability to read the headlines on ET's newspaper quite yet :-) Karl

But what if extra terrestrials are reading our newspaper headlines?!
What if they've only seen the headlines of the Daily Star?
I sense an invasion!

Pfff, I think they're more likely to speed away as fast as they can, in their arsenic powered space craft, reading that sh1t. And the Sun's even worse!

www.atlasoftheuniverse.comFound this awesome website during a quiet moment at work when Ratchet was being fixed (I tried to reverse him into an Ambulance Station garage that's door wasn't high enough - ahem...). Anyway, check it out. It's been done by a chap called Richard Powell, and it blew my 'thingies' off! Also has links to other great sites.

A new ring has been discovered around Saturn. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8291905.stmWell, okay, not technically a new ring. It was obviously there before. It's amazing that in these days of Hubble and sending probes outside the solar system, we're still discovering new things about our close neighbours.

We're sending probes outside the system? Yeah, haven't you seen Star Trek: The Motion Picture? Seriously, though, I don't know much about NASA's deep space exploration, but probes they've sent to the outer planets have kept or will keep going out of the solar system. I don't know what sort of transmission range or lifespan they have.
