Ah, yes. Saw that a while ago. Unfortunately it does not give a good first impression as the chap on the left is sliding forward while taking a dump and staring at his fist, which gives me horrible flashbacks to the DW profile books. The other chap and beast modes look alright though.
However, however, this isn't really a proper preview and it's the writing that makes a really good profile book so full judgement is of course reserved. I do look forward to it. A decent Beast Wars profile volume would be nice.

Preview art looks good.

Owch. At that price point I'm afraid it has just slid down the list of things I am likely to pick up this week. I think I shall have a listen to what people think of it before I decided whether to invest paper pounds in it.

I've had a proper look at it now. I suppose I've been spoiled by the Marvel Handbooks by their huge amounts of detail so first impressions were 'hmmm, not much reading for more cash', but then to be fair this is a different kind of thing so fair enough. Not huge wads of text on the entries, a wee bit above ye olde tech specs level. Overall the issue is variable, some entries are intriguing, some are bland. Art is mostly fine, Guido puts in a good shift in particular but the quality goes through the floor when Rob Ruffalo is on the page and perspective goes somewhere else to die. Strangely some entries refer to third modes which are not pictured. Production is nice generally with a few niggles. The card cover could have been stiffer (feels a bit flimsy) and while the paper is nice, as a lot of white and light colours are used images from previous pages can show through at times. Bit of a shame the inside back cover is er, blank. Minor niggles, yes, but enough to annoy me considering the high price-point. Marvel Handbooks are $3 cheaper (the closest type of publication in the direct market to compare it to).
It's ok, not sure if I'll pick up the rest of the series. Much better than DW's 'More than Meets the Eye', not in the same league as Marvel's 'Transformers Universe' or 'A-Z' entries. A decent effort, I know how dificult it can be to do books of his kind. Try before you buy.

He's not the only one who looks a bit peaky - I had a flick through a copy today and noticed that Cheetor is blue for some strange reason (Dirge's vehicle mode looks a bit odd as well, somewhat misshapen and off-model. Which is a shame because the actual toy - disregarding the arm and leg kibble - is a creditable stab at the actual vehicle).

That might well be it - I'm not used to thinking of Cheetor as blue for some reason, and the blue seemed to be a very "blue" blue that it just struck me as odd. (I suspect the problem may actually be with me, rather than with the profile book)

Well, I picked this up. Smarting slightly at the high price point. There's not a lot of content here. Most of the characters don't get a great deal written about them - they have more words than a tech-spec, but not much more than the box back character profiles. They are certainly nowhere near as developed as the old TFU profiles or even some of the A-Z's. The layout means there is an awful lot of underutilised space on the page as well.
The art - presumably what they view as the primary selling point - is extremely variable - with some of it being quite good and other pieces being rather poor. (Comparing the Apache and B'Boom pictures is a real study in contrast. One that looks like it has fur and the other which appears to be made of a material even smoother than the plastic of the toy.). And also - orange BB.... I can't work out why he has been singled out for such a dramatic colour change. Between the variability of the art, and the very thin content in most of the entries I have ended up feeling I'm paying rather a high proportion of my £4.95 for the expanses of white space on the pages. Not viewing this as anything approaching value for my money. Dropped.

Ah well. It was a decent enough attempt, but kinda fell flat.
I was hoping for more coverage on the "main" characters than was published... and even then the "bio" section documented history not personality.
Plus I am not too sure combining the Beast Wars with Japanese storyline with IDW storyline is such a good idea, since we're left with a lot of characters that look/act the same but with different names. Apache/B'boom and Drillbit/Drill Nuts being examples... this sort of thing has the distinct, bleachy whiff of fankwank.
I get that Powermaster Optimus Prime and Ginrai are different characters that look identical, but they were never ever shown side-by-side in the same storyline. Would we be seeing identical twins Bluestreak and Streak or Landmine and Lander in the same storyline in a future IDW story?
I will skip the rest of the series, but I might come back for the TPB if the artwork's nice.

I doubt I will bother to pick it up in trade format to be honest. I didn't really find many of the character profiles particularly interesting. There was too much "this happened to X and then he did Y" and "X has a whatever-gun in Munky mode", and not enough focus on what they were like as _characters_. That and the very variable art has pretty much killed it stone dead for me.

The 2nd issue is on the shipping list for this week. It's been some time since I missed an TF comic (I purposely avoided the movie comics, in order to purchase the trade), though I may force myself to wait for the trade of this one.
